Hyundai's aptly named 2011 Genesis Coupe represents a rebirth of sorts for the growing Korean automaker. Introduced last year, the much-ballyhooed two-door replaced the dowdy Tiburon as the sportiest entry in Hyundai's ever-expanding lineup. For 2011 the Genesis Coupe (not to be confused with Hyundai's large sedan of the same name) gets some minor interior tweaks and a new R-spec V6 model designed to appeal to hardcore drivers.
The Genesis Coupe turned many heads when it was introduced in early 2009 as a 2010 model. Critical enthusiasm for its squat, aggressive styling was matched only by the excitement generated by the coupe's serious spec sheet. The Genesis Coupe is rear-wheel drive, a first for Hyundai, and thus benefits from the substantial dynamic advantages afforded by that configuration. With a willing chassis, potent four- or six-cylinder power and eye-catching styling, the 2011 Genesis Coupe has a lot to offer.
For 2011 Hyundai seems to be positioning the Genesis Coupe as a worthy alternative to established import names like the Nissan 370Z. The new R-spec V6 model (which augments a similarly trimmed four-cylinder version) appeals to the Fast and Furious set with lightweight components and flashy 19-inch wheels. While the Genesis Coupe hasn't yet found sales success against established American names like the Ford Mustang, Hyundai clearly believes that it has the chops to do battle with Japan's finest.
Two very different engines are offered in the Genesis Coupe. Base trims get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that features a single Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger running 14 psi of boost. The turbo motor features variable valve timing and makes a healthy 210 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque. Mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, the 2.0-liter Genesis accelerates confidently (0-60 comes up in under 7 seconds) and isn't plagued with noticeable turbo lag. Optional across the Genesis range is a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 that churns out 306 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. With the big six the Genesis charges to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds on its way to an impressive 149-mph top speed. With the larger engine, buyers also get the choice of an upgraded ZF six-speed automatic.
Underneath the 2011 Genesis' aggressive bodywork lies a unit-body chassis featuring a four-wheel independent suspension and, of course, rear-wheel drive. With MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement out back, the Genesis Coupe feels planted and secure in the corners. The RWD setup pays enormous dividends in overall balance, freeing-up the front end for cornering duties while allowing drivers to kick out the tail with a poke of the throttle. Genesis models equipped with the four-cylinder turbo motor possess exceptionally quick steering with immediate turn-in. V6 trims carry just a bit more weight up front but still feel light on their feet. The track-ready R-spec package sharpens up the handling even further with firmer shocks, adjustable front suspension camber and a limited-slip differential.
On the highway and around town, the Genesis Coupe rides smoothly on its standard 18-inch wheels. Many prospective buyers might be tempted to upgrade to the optional 19-inch rolling stock, yet checking that box causes the car's composed ride to become rather harsh and unsettled. It's also important to note that the extra diameter doesn't provide as large a contact patch as you'd think; the section width of both wheels is the same at 225 mm in front and 245 mm in back. While the Genesis Coupe's composed suspension is worthy of praise, the engineers might have spent more time on ensuring that the manual gearbox was up to world-class standards. The shifter's long, ropy throws and the clutch's abrupt engagement show that Hyundai still has a bit of learning to do.
Hyundai has upgraded the Genesis Coupe's interior for 2011 with subtle refinements, including a new leather covering for the steering-wheel and darker metallic trim on the console. These tweaks improve an already cozy space that fits the driver just right. The seating position and sight lines are excellent, and most controls are logically placed. While the comfortable and supportive front buckets feature a wide range of adjustment, the Genesis Coupe's characteristically small back seat offers little in the way of leg- or headroom. The relatively spacious 10-cubic-foot trunk does add some utility to the platform, and the rear seats fold down for extra carrying capacity.
With the addition of the R-spec V6 there are now eight trims available for the 2011 Genesis Coupe. Base 2.0T models feature the four-cylinder motor and are well equipped with power windows and keyless entry, along with a CD stereo with AUX input and Bluetooth connectivity. The 2.0T Premium trim adds a power driver's seat, sunroof and an upgraded Infinity stereo system. For the enthusiast the 2.0T Track gets the slightly punishing 19-inch wheels and a limited-slip differential, along with strong Brembo brakes. Those planning on racing (or modifying) their Genesis should start with the 2.0T R-spec which gains the aforementioned suspension revisions while deleting the cruise control, automatic headlights and other features deemed unnecessary for serious track work.
The V6 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Base trim offers standard leather seats and automatic climate control, along with most of the features included on the 2.0T Premium. The 3.8 Grand Touring trim gets heated seats, xenon headlights and parking sensors. The 3.8 Track and 3.8 R-spec trims come equipped exactly like the 2.0T variants, save for the bigger motor. Though 2011 pricing has yet to be announced expect the four-cylinder Genesis to start around $22,000 and a loaded 3.8 Grand Touring to sneak in just under 30 grand. The Genesis Coupe's high level of engineering excellence and sparkling performance make it quite the bargain at those rates. Though sales haven't yet lived up to Hyundai's expectations, the company's willingness to produce such a bold new car should earn them a measure of marketplace respect.

It depends on which trim level you get, but either one will put a smile on your face, dont listen to people who way the 2.0t is slow because its not, its a whole lot faster than your typical Honda civic and a lot of other cars on the road lol. Its looked sexy as hell, people compliment the car all the time and get stares from people. Interior trim in nice, seats are bolstered properly, nothing in it feels cheap like my Honda civic did
But MAAAN THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE IS LIKE NO OTHER!.

Overall it’s a good value. It’s probably better crafted in later years. Lots of rattling with the stiff sporty suspension in the cab. Pet peeve of mine made it a no go. Broke tires free at 50mph though...so definitely one for fun.Dec 31, 2020

I just purchased the 6 speed manual version of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track and I have to say I've had more fun driving this vehicle than any other I've owned.. and I've owned 4 mustang Gt's, a Porsche 944s, Celica Gt, and an Iroc. The 6 speed manual was a little harder to find but I'm glad now that I held out for it. If you love to drive and get full interaction with a true sports car like I do the manual is the way to go. This car just begs to be driven hard on a back winding road and does not disappoint when you give in. If I had to say anything negative about this vehicle it would be in the interior options. The interior has a nice cockpit feel and suprisingly good leg room (for a front seat passenger). But in my opinion the window buttons are a little awkward to get to where they are on the door. Placement somewhere on the center console would have been better. The display options are also a little sparse. Seems like there should be more content for such a large touch screen. The Infinity sound system is ok but then again I've been spoiled by my Maxima's Bose system over the past year. Overall I think I love this car more than any I've owned so far... and I'm a little embarassed to name all the vehicles I've had over the years... I really don't think I could.. Aug 15, 2014

Never thought I'd want a Hyundai... I have always been a Toyota fan but the good looks of this Genesis coupe lured me into driving it, and I just fell in love with it. It's everything I've ever wanted in a car. So much fun to drive. Who needs coffee when your morning commute is a thrill ride? It has all the amenities of a luxury car (navigation, siriusXM, bluetooth, sunroof, power heated leather seats, etc) but with a larger, more responsive engine, better handling and styling, and at half the price. I'm 25 and thankfully I don't have kids, so I couldn't care less about the small back seat everyone is complaining about . If you wanted a family car, then buy a sedan (or a minivan if you have a massive brood), not a sports coupe. It is nice to have a back seat from time to time (extra cargo space, friends who need a DD from the bar, etc.) but it's no secret that the back seats in a coupe are not the most accommodating. Safety is important in a high-performance car, my Gen coupe meets those standards too... excellent crash test ratings,, Brembo brakes that have saved my life more than once, and much better visibility than any other coupe I've driven.Jun 21, 2014

High quality , great price-power ratio. This was introduced at 3/4 of the price of
the other cars with the same performance potential. It is a beautiful car with lots of
power that is a joy to drive. The downside would be that it is not much of a
``passenger car`` and replacement parts are expensive but on par with the rest

My 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe key gob not working correctly. It will unlock trunk and doors make a clicking noise when I try to unlock the doors, but they do not unlock.
My key fib opens the trunk, but nit the doors. The doors make a noise when I push the key fob button and the lights flash. Doors remain locked. I have replaced the battery.
