With a major power and size overhaul coming for 2010, the 2009 Toyota Prius keeps its footprint unchanged, with the exception of the possible addition of roof solar panels late in the model year. The world's best-known hybrid sedan continues to excel in fuel economy. With official numbers around 48/45 mpg and consumer reports of anywhere up to 50 mpg, the Prius reigns as the most fuel-efficient vehicle on the road.
Available in Standard, Base, and sporty Touring trims, the front-wheel-drive 2009 Prius offers a full hybrid system, meaning the car can run on either the engine or the electric motor alone (the latter only when traveling at speeds of 25 mph or less), or a combination of the two. Combined, the 1.5-liter DOHC inline-four engine and two electric motors put out 110 hp. No plug-in is required. The only transmission is an ECVT, or electronic continuously variable transmission, which reduces gear grind and shift noise to deliver a smooth and quiet ride. Highway acceleration can unfortunately feel sluggish, but no one buys the Prius to break land-speed records. Regenerative braking and engine cut-off when idling recharge the NiMH battery.
The 2009 Prius boasts a surprisingly roomy interior, with more rear legroom than a Ford Crown Victoria. Its 38.6 inches of legroom easily accommodate two adults in the back, though the sloping roofline can feel cramped for anyone 6 feet or taller. Rear seats split-fold conveniently flat, and the 14.4-cubic-foot trunk features underfloor storage for extra capacity. In the front, an LCD screen displays hybrid information and incorporates both climate and audio controls. The screen can be a bit distracting and overly complicated at first use.
The Standard trim offers full power accessories, Bluetooth, a CD/MP3 player, and keyless start. The Base adds cruise control, heated mirrors, and a rear spoiler. The Touring replaces the 15-inch wheels with 16-inch alloys and adds foglights, xenon headlamps, and a sport suspension. Plenty of upscale options are available, but they can really drive up the already high price of the 2009 Prius. Various packages offers voice-activated navigation, a Smart Key, a rearview camera, and leather upholstery. All trims earn four stars in crash tests and come equipped with 4-wheel ABS brakes, traction control, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows. Stability control is optional on the Standard and standard on Base and Touring trims.
Any complaints about the 2009 Prius become quickly overshadowed by its overwhelming fuel efficiency. A roomy interior, easy maneuverability, quiet handling, and tight turning radius contribute to an overall comfortable and smooth ride. Drivers and critics do complain about the flat, hard, and uncomfortable front seat cushions, the lack of telescopic steering, and the poor rear visibility caused by the small rear window. A desire for more power should be answered by the upcoming 2010 Prius, which will replace the 1.5-liter with a 1.8-liter inline four, supposedly without sacrificing fuel economy.

It is a change from a non hybrid car. Has great fuel economy, a little road/wind noise when you drive on the highway. More comfortable and roomier than I expected. Very happy with the car.May 30, 2021

Rides smooth as silk, looks super sharp. The hybrid system works great and was clearly cared for, got 68.1 MPG the other day.
The MFD in the center was a pretty big desire for me in a Prius, and it helps greatly to centralize everything.
It was more then I was looking at spending, but it was in such great shape and so low mileage that it was impossible to pass up.

i am tall and sometimes the leg room in the front seats was feeling a little uncomfortable
other than that all is great with this car.
Overall my family liked this car.. and its my wife's favorite car.

There is nothing really wrong with this car. It's physics that are holding it back. It's 'just enough' and very reliable. Not a race car, not a hauler, great for in town commuting. Feel good if someone in your family gets one. Just hope you don't end up being the one driving it, it'll ruin your rep as a tuff guy.Feb 02, 2015

The Prius is great for what it is- a hybrid. I needed a car that got good gas mileage when I was driving 200 miles per day. I tend to average around 45 mpg. The acceleration is a bit slow but I have an IS F for that. The main thing is this car can go twice the distance of my 4runner approx. 500 miles on less than half the tank 10 gallons vs 23 gallons for the 4runner. If I don't have need for this car in the next 60 days I will be getting rid of it though.Mar 04, 2009

Toyota Prius - Depleted Battery Power in Mountains
Has this happened to you? We were driving on Highway 70 through the Rockies and climbing to the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,000 feet. On our way up the mountain, the car's battery ran out of power near the summit and we crawled to the top on the gasoline engine only. It made it, but, I wasn't happy about it. We stopped along the way to charge us the battery and it worked for a while, but, the thing got depleted really fast. Not sure I want to do that again. Soon as we reached the top, the car resumed to normal operation and its fine. No apparent damage to the hybrid system. HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD AN EXPERIENCE LIKE THIS?

How do you turn on the Bluetooth in the 2009 Prius?
My bluetooth on the phone is working, but the bluetooth on the car is off and I cannot get it turned back on.The screen is blanked out so I cannot hit any buttons. I go to telephone, settings, bluetooth and that's as far as it goes; even the auto connect is not highlighted. So, I need to have the car's bluetooth turned back on...any suggestions?

Gen 2 Prius won't go to ready after new aux battery.
I have a 2nd gen 2009 Prius T Spirit which I have owned from new and which has now done 205k miles without any real issues. The car was stationary for nearly 4 weeks and when I came to move it the electrics were dead. I checked the aux 12v battery which was dead showing 3 volts. I replaced the battery but now the car will not go to Ready and all the warning lights stay on i.e. VSC, ABS, engine etc and red triangle (of doom?). I'm stuck on the drive and loathed to call for garage/AA etc if it's potentially something I can deal with. Any ideas welcomed with thanks.
