The redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester offers more features for less money.
The new Forester has been restyled as a modern, curvy people carrier. Even so, it’s still got the capability and the attitude that people have come to love from Subaru. Offered in five trim levels with two engine choices and two transmission choices, there’s a Forester for nearly any buyer, and a powertrain for nearly any situation.
The Forester targets new-car buyers that want a safe, value-conscious vehicle with plenty of standard features. It competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and the Mitsubishi Outlander.
The base 2.5X trim level starts at $19,995 before destination, taxes, or options. The 2.5X Performance Package starts at $22,495; the L.L. Bean Edition starts at $25,995; the XT starts at $26,195; and the XT Limited has a starting price of $28,195.

The Forester has been overhauled for the 2009 model year with a new rounded look that is both more modern and more car-like than the boxy profile the vehicle carried before. Some models, such as the XT trim, have muscular styling touches like a functional hood scoop and wheel-arch bulges. Overall, the look is meant to turn the Forester from a rough-and-tumble backwoods vehicle into something with more mainstream styling.
Inside, the Forester borrows heavily from the Subaru Impreza. Its dash carries a sweeping shape with silver accents that makes the cockpit look and feel cozier and more driver-oriented. While the vehicle didn’t lose any of its capability in the move to a kinder, gentler shape, interior quality and finishes took a giant leap forward.

The 2009 Forester is available with two engine choices. The standard mill is a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged version of that engine is also available and is rated at 224 horsepower and 226 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard. A five-speed manual transmission and four-speed automatic are available.
The base engine has to work hard to get the Forester up to highway speeds, and once there, passing is a true chore for the powertrain. The four-speed automatic stays busy, trying to find the right gear for the situation. With a turbocharger, the upgraded engine is much better suited for Forester duty, and truly makes it feel like a different vehicle. The five-speed manual transmission is a more suitable choice for the base engine, and works well, despite having longer-than-expected gear throws.
While the Forester isn't likely to win a drag race, the vehicle is more than able to hold its own, both on- and off-road. It features 8.7 inches of ground clearance—which puts it on the level of several large SUVs—and the new double-wishbone rear suspension that came with the 2009 update helps soak up all but the worst ruts and bumps in the road.

The Forester was designed with function at the top of its priorities list, which shows in nearly every aspect of its design. The front seats are comfortable and well padded, but lack side bolstering and hip support. Adding leather brings an extra layer of comfort, and an almost luxury feel to the Forester’s seating accommodations.
Thanks to a longer wheelbase, back-seat legroom is generous, and the 60/40 split-folding bench seat remains comfortable on longer drives. Cargo space is also plentiful, as the Forester offers 33.5 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 68.3 when they’re folded flat. The rear-door openings are large and relatively square, which makes for easy loading and unloading of car seats and children.
Thoughtful packages make using the Forester year round much less stressful as well. Options like the all-weather package bring upgraded floor mats, heated seats, and more to make the Forester a formidable winter vehicle.
Outward visibility from the driver's seat is great in all directions. That’s due to Subaru’s thoughtful approach to pillar design, which allows for large windows and little obstruction.

Technology offerings vary greatly, depending on the trim level. Base Forester models get a four-speaker audio system, an AM/FM stereo, a CD player, cruise control, and speed-sensitive volume controls. A six-disc CD changer, automatic climate controls, seven-speaker audio, navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and wireless phone connectivity are all offered.
In most cases, the Forester’s audio and entertainment technologies work just fine. There’s a level of simplicity and an uncluttered feel that makes them easy to use. Some features, however, need more polish. In models equipped with a navigation system, the screen can feel almost useless at times, because it’s nearly impossible to see in sunlight, or with sunglasses on. The voice guidance is also annoying, and urges drivers to move when stopped at red lights and in traffic.

As a company, Subaru maintains a strong focus on vehicle safety. The Forester is a great example of those efforts, having received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2009 model year. That award is based on top "good" scores in all crash-test categories. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the Forester five stars for front crash protection, five stars for side crash protection, and four stars for rollover resistance.
Several safety features are standard for the 2009 Forester. It comes with stability control, braking assistance, dual front-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, remote keyless entry, side-impact bars, seat-mounted side-impact airbags, an occupant-sensing airbag system, traction control, anti-lock brakes, seatbelt pretensioners, fog lights, and daytime running lights.

With an MSRP starting below $20,000, the Subaru Forester offers a compelling mix of capability, utility, and value. Standard all-wheel drive and extensive safety equipment are both great reasons to check out the Forester. Making the deal sweeter, the 2009 updates brought more new tech and features for less money, and the improvements made to the Forester’s interior have only sweetened the deal.
The Forester's fuel-economy ratings are competitive as well. With the base 2.5-liter engine and a manual gearbox, it's rated at 20/27/22 mpg city/hwy/combined. An automatic transmission changes those numbers to 20/26/22 mpg, and upgrading to the turbocharged engine results in EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 19/24/21 mpg.
At $19,995 before destination, taxes, or options, the Subaru Forester 2.5X base model is the least expensive of the bunch and the 2.5XT Limited trim tops out at $28,195. The turbo engine in higher trims requires premium fuel, which increases operating costs over the long term as well.

I’ve owned and driven a variety of compact SUVs; CR-V, Rav-4, Rogue. And never managed to take a Forester for a spin before this. It was a pleasure! Comparable in handling and pep, and I appreciated the copious head room that I require. I liked being able to hold passengers comfortably, or carry cargo. Two bikes and some gear will fit in the back, and so will two dogs for trips to the dog park. The roof rails are great for holding different racks.Nov 01, 2014

I can't think of a more perfect car for a family, particularly if you enjoy outdoor activities (camping, kayaking, skiing) and/or travel with pets - the cargo space is fantastic and the four-wheel drive gets you safely to your destination in any weather. The cons are primarily associated with any heavy, all-wheel drive vehicle: fuel economy isn't the best and maintenance costs tend to be higher than the standard sedan. But it can't be beat for function and safety and is a pleasure to drive.Mar 19, 2014

This car can go fast and I feel incredibly safe at 80 mph with no shimmy or shake. Getting out of tight spots is a snap the way it jumps on a dime and the handling is tight - so much fun to drive and comfy as a driver or a passenger. It has a nice design, better than the new ones. Very good visibility. Good handling. Very very comfortable ride. Sport shift gives it a great sport like feel. Leather interior feels clean and warm seats makes you feel like u don't want to leave the car especially on cold mornings. Lots of interior room. And you got to love the sunroof.Apr 24, 2013

Great car to drive, lots of room for a stationwagon/SUV. Love the comfortable leather seats and large moon roof. Great resale value! Gas mileage in the 20s which is decent. Very attractive interior and exterior styling. Not happy with the "pinging" after turning the car off. Was told by the service department that it is just cooling down. Subaru's move to make the Forester more mainstream paid off. Though it's softer and less of a sharp handler than before, it easily makes it up for it with better interior room and cargo space. Though it's basically an Impreza with a crossover body, the Forester suffers from much more "body flex" because of the large standard moon roof.May 31, 2010

We bought the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5X Premium. It is a V4 engine but has great acceleration ability. Mileage is about 25-27 in the City. The AWD is just great! It handles bumpy roads with ease. We love the large moon roof. The ride is surprisingly quite on the Hwy's even with an open moon roof.
The passenger side front seat is lower than the driver front side but one gets used to it after a while. I wish the sound system was of better quality (available in more expensive options).
It is one of the most sleek crossover available in the market. Over all we would rate this vehicle a ***** rating.

To be honest, I have never once looked at a Subaru Forester until about 3 months ago. What once used to be what I considered a station wagon is now more SUV-looking than ever. Performance as always from Subaru is solid, with the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive System. Braking is superb, and the car handles like a charm.
I've never had any issues with the build quality of the car, although when the music is played at full blast, the doors will do some rattling.... May need some dynamats.
The styling of this car is great... The Subaru Accessory guide is great, with front/rear bumper guards, side skirts, spoilers, etc.
The sound system that comes standard is not that great, but it can easily be modified and the standard head unit already has an output for an aftermarket sub. You can easily add on Subaru Tweeters and a Sub, or go for an aftermarket sub.
Gas Mileage on a small-size SUV like this is pretty good... Considering the way I drive, i get about 22MPG, compared to my old ML320 that got 13MPG.

Vehicle seems to be very solidly built. Feels a bit stiff when new but comes out of it around 500 miles and is quite quick in the turns. Vehicle seems to be very sure footed. Our Montana winter should prove that statement or not. Everything performs well but the stereo system could be a bit better even in the base model. The performance acceleration, braking and handling seem to adequate to excellent depending on the circumstances. Interior and exterior styling aren't bad but could have been a bit more SUV looking. It is a great improvement in rear seat room over previous models. Gas mileage is good but could have been better for the size of the vehicle. This vehicle is enjoyable to drive and the seats are quite comfortable.May 28, 2009

A fun ride, great moon roof and superior handling on the road. Very pretty red and gray pinstriping and I had the seats swapped out for leather. A recent trip to Canada showed up with 32.1 mpg...a big plus, but normally get 28 mpg. Keeping up with the maintenance is a real plus...just an all around sharp and great running vehicle.Dec 07, 2008

Traded in my 05 WRX for this car. The trade was painful but after driving the Forester, I am happy as the time I was driving the WRX.
The new design is roomy and ergonomic. The heated seats are great in the winter and the leg room in the back is a great improvement over the old Forester and the WRX. Cargo space has been adequate and I recently moved a whole deck table and three chairs in one trip.
The car drives with great handling and it is a lot of fun driving on gravel and off road.
The only problem I'm having is the internal rattling in the dash area.

Now is the time to upgrade from previous models. This model is
luxurious compared to the bare bones, functional interior of the
previous models. Lots more room since the expanded the chassis by 3
inches.
The new shorter gearing of the transmission carries the new, larger
frame quite well. Not as fast as the '04 XT, which was legendary at it's
time. But from '05 on there were small cosmetic upgrades and gutless
performance compared to the '04 so it was not worth upgrading until
now. This year they caught up with the performance, and it has
tiptronic shifting.
The handling is more SUV than car now. Very smooth ride, handles
bumps well. But, it can't handle the curves quite as quickly as my old
'04, which was much smaller and more stealthy. Better gas mileage

2009 Forester XT overheating at slow speeds
A little background first just in case it could be relevant. I had a catalytic converter go bad/clog up and that did cause the engine temp light to flash red briefly one time. Got the cat replaced and everything seemed fine for several months. I just drove over 300 miles from OKC to Lawrence KS without any issues at all until I arrived in Lawrence and slowed down to city street speeds. Red temp warning lamp starts flashing. I opened the OBD Link app on my phone and there are two different temp readings: Engine Temp, and Coolant Temp. These appear to be different sensors because Coolant temp reads fine at ~190F, but engine temp is ~220-230F. I stopped the car immediately. Opened the hood, and this car has two pressurized caps for the coolant. One on the radiator, and one on a small tank by the turbocharger. The cap on the tank near the turbo (which has a lower pressure rating) is burping fluid into the reserve tank (non-pressurized) which has overflowed. I did not notice anything indicating coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant (dipstick and under the fill cap looked fine as did the coolant in the reserve tank). I let it cool and drove to an auto parts store, then to my hotel for the night. The next day I put almost half a gallon of coolant in the car. Drove a few miles around town and everything was fine. Got on the road back to OKC and I am watching the temps like a hawk. No overheating at highway speeds, but as soon as I pulled off for gas and a bio break, the temp starts going up over 200F quickly, but I shut off the car before the light came on. Got back in the car and as I accelerated on to the highway, the red warning light blinked for about 5 sec, then stopped and temps were fine the rest of the way home until I got off the highway again. Again, as soon as I started slowing down, the temps quickly rose above 200F and got up to almost 240F before I could get somewhere to stop the car and shut off the engine. Again, the reserve tank has overflowed because the cap near the turbo is releasing coolant. The upper radiator hose is obviously hot, but the lower one barely feels warm at all. Could my radiator be clogged? Could the cap by the turbo be bad and releasing coolant which causes the engine temp to overheat while the coolant temp still appears fine? I do not THINK it is the head gasket because there are still no indications of coolant and oil mixing in either the engine or the radiator and overflow tank, but I do not know what else it could be. Please help. Thank you.

2009 Subaru Forester CEL at highway speeds/passing gear
09 Forester 150k Miles and Remanufactured engine put on at 135k Problem I’m trying to resolve: CEL flashes at 75- 80 MPH in passing gear on highway. If I slow down it will come off and car runs completely fine. Only happens at the higher speeds. This is something that has basically been happening since the new engine was put in. Last couple months car has been very slow and low gas mileage and after taking it to different places we finally had someone say just try to replace the spark plugs and wires and you’ll be good. It was a relatively simple job so my dad and I tackled it ourselves. Come to the conclusion that spark plugs one and four were toast so we replaced them all and the car has been running perfectly. I haven’t needed to go on the highway recently but went on there today to test it out and the CEL is still flashing at those speeds. Car is running perfectly fine (even better than it did right after the engine was replaced) other than that. What could be causing the cel to still come on even though the car is running like it’s brand new?! If anybody else has had this issue or anything related please lmk how you fixed it!
