If you want to go hybrid, but can’t give up the comfort and performance of a luxury sport sedan, there’s a clear-cut choice for you – the 2009 Lexus GS 450h. Okay, so it’s the only hybrid luxury sport sedan out there, but even if there were other choices, it would be hard to pass up the GS 450h.
A 3.5-liter, 340-horsepower V6 capable of 211 lb-ft of torque combines with a 288-volt DC Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack that charges the permanent-magnet electric-drive motor to power the rear-wheel-drive GS 450h. The vehicle can operate in electric-only mode, gas-only, or a combination. It does use just the electric motor when starting, driving slowly or in low-load driving. The V6 is based on Lexus’s new GS platform, and the company claims it feels like a V8 and has also clocked the GS 450h getting from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.
Its midrange acceleration may be more impressive than 0-60 times, thanks in large part to the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. This technology optimizes intake and exhaust valve timing to increase torque at lower speeds and horsepower at high speeds. The GS 450h also assists the driver with its Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system, which assimilates the steering and braking along with Lexus’s Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control systems to help maintain traction in adverse conditions.
The GS 450h's 22/25 mpg mileage may not seem like much for a hybrid, but remember, this is a luxury sedan, and it's rated as a Super-Low Emissions Vehicle II. If the mileage doesn’t strike you as remarkable, then the regenerative braking probably will. Energy that is normally lost as heat during braking is captured by the GS 450h with an electric motor/generator and is then transferred into the battery.
The innovation extends to the transmission. The Electronically Controlled continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT) uses planetary gears and eliminates specific gear ratios. The ECVT features a two-speed torque multiplication device that will enable you to choose between three self-explanatory settings: power, normal, and snow.
Standard safety features include variable-force front airbags for the driver and passenger, seat-mounted side airbags for the front, side curtain airbags for both the front and rear, and four-sensor antilock brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.
Lexus goes out of its way to make the ride in the GS 450h a quiet one, with a sound-absorbing windshield and asphalt sheets behind the instrument panel, fans and motors to reduce cabin noise, and fluid-filled front engine mounts. This hushed ambience is made more enjoyable by the refined cabin, with its heated and ventilated seats, wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel, a 7-inch 10-speaker sound system, an auxiliary iPod port, and an automatic dual-zone climate control with a smog sensor and dust/pollen filter.
