A 13 year-old Volvo S80 going at 30 mph hit a tree and the driver's airbag deployed. Examination of steering wheel in car lot revealed a starburst-like formation with sharp edges seeming to rise out of steering wheel. Was this the "airbag" or had first responders removed it? Driver's right thumb ripped in half, muscles sheared, hanging by a thread. Presumably, this starburst-like formation caused the hand damage. Why didn't the airbag protect driver's hand?
