The 2006 Element brings a number of equipment changes and adds a new trim line, the EX-P, to its LX and EX lineup.
The three trim lines all share an i-VTEC 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 156 hp with 160 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard, with a four-speed automatic optional. All models offer either front-wheel drive (2WD) or Honda’s Real-Time 4-Wheel Drive (4WD). Reviewers in a 2WD LX manual did the 0-60 jump in 8.8 seconds, while Honda gives 11.4 seconds with the automatic.
The EPA gives the following fuel efficiency ratings: 21/25 mpg (2WD, manual); 22/26 mpg (2WD, automatic); 21/24 mpg (4WD, manual); 21/24 mpg (4WD, automatic). Reviewers managed a 21.2 mpg average in a 4WD automatic.
The Element’s running gear, like that of its CR-V cousin, makes use of Civic components. Although 8 inches taller than the CR-V, the Element is shorter than a Civic coupe. In order to provide maximum carrying capacity, the Element seats only four. The missing B-pillar, usually right behind the front seats, provides one of its most striking features. The back side doors are rear-hinged for wider opening, and without the B-pillar, they allow easy large-object loading. As a safety feature, the rear doors cannot open without first opening the front doors; when closing, the rear doors go first, then front doors. Reviewers enjoy the wide open spaces, but complain about the door opening sequences. The tailgate splits horizontally, with the top raising like a hatch and the bottom opening downward like a tailgate.
The cabin's layout is highly flexible. The lack of a central tunnel combined with a high roof provides a spacious front seating area. The rear seats, raised off the floor for more legroom, fold down, swing up to the side, or can be easily removed. The resulting spacious, uninterrupted flat floor space is coated in a water-, dirt-, and scratch-resistant urethane material that's easy to clean. The front and rear seats are coated with an easily cleaned waterproof material. With the rear seats removed, the Element offers 75 cubic feet of cargo space. Reviewers found the seats could be configured as a large double bed, as a carrier for two 10-foot surfboards with two surfers, as a dog carrier, or to fit the kitchen sink. The 4WD configuration also adds a removable rear sunroof across all the trim lines.
As a 2WD, reviewers report slight torque steer, which goes away in 4WD form. The Element’s wider-than-a-CR-V's track improves its cornering ability. The engine with manual transmission provides sprightly performance, but the automatic dampens it. The Element’s tall form creates wind noise at highway speed, but its good steering and brake feedback add to a more car-like than SUV-ish driving experience.
Standard safety equipment across the line includes four-wheel ABS disc brakes. EX and EX-P levels offer side-impact airbags as standard equipment. Government crash tests award the Element with a five-star (highest) rating for frontal-impact protection; side-impact tests also yielded five-star ratings front and rear. IIHS frontal-offset crash testing resulted in top ratings, but in its side-impact tests of small SUVs, an Element without the optional side airbags received a “Poor” rating.

I own a 06 Honda element ex manual transmission 290,000 miles.
It’s a great car, but it would have been better as a hybrid and have the back windows to go down, plus it has a bit of an issue with blind spots.
I don’t know what to replace it with. I love the versatility of it and it is great for travel.May 19, 2024

Lots of people say get a 2007 or later because they moved the seat belts to the seat, gave it a small amount of extra power and an extra AT gear. I prefer the 2006 because the seatbelts are more comfortable the orginal way, they still offered color coordinated dash panels on some of the models and the power difference is not noticable. Also the 2006 and older models still allow you to change light bulbs in the dash board. Every year of this vehicle has its pluses and minuses!Sep 15, 2023

This is my 4th Element, Second AWD. Have had an SC for 11 years 255k miles and would drive it cross country tomorrow. They are great vehicles. Exterior parts/panels are becoming harder to find if something were to happen. Windshields are cheap just be sure to replace the clips on the plastic pillars, do not allow them to reuse existing ones. They demand a high price for high mileage units do to the functional space, seats, clam shells doors. It’s a toaster, and boxes have been around for ever. Classic for sure. Oct 13, 2022

I like the size , the storage space and 4wheel drive. It’s a Honda. It’s worth the $. I don’t know what it’s missing. I haven’t driven it yet. If I had to compare it to another model, it would probably be the Subaru Forester or Toyota Rav-4Sep 26, 2022

I thought the Honda was very clean & in top condition. I felt the price was a little high, but the mileage was low. The reason I didn’t jump on it was the fact that it was FWD. I live in snow country & I felt a AWD would work better. I purchased a Nissan Rogue in 2016 FWD and it was not as good as my Jeep Liberty with 4WD.Nov 15, 2020

it is a basic vehicle + 4WD if you get that option. If you have large breed dog or just dogs it is perfect
you can just hose out the mess. lol, it is not fuel friendly , if the transmission & engine have been & are properly

As I mentioned in the pros/cons section, I loved my Element! But had to part with it because of my growing family. It's a do-all vehicle with rock solid reliability. The back seats easily fold up to the sides and out of the way or come out completely out. Unfortunately the seats are what ended it's stay with us...I wish they could have made provisions for a center seat belt position.
The plastic interior makes for easy cleaning and when the kids spill their juice box you don't have to worry about stains. The gas mileage and horse power could have been better. Leg room for the back seat was quite impressive, even tall adults can stretch out and nap with the reclining seats.
The all wheel drive tore through the snow, it's not something you're going to take mudding or even on mild off roading though. Ground clearance won't allow too much craziness.Mar 24, 2014

We have had this car for about 3 years now. It has been nothing but reliable. We have had standard things done to it, and it is plugging away. There is hardly any need to own a truck when you have an Element, and when you don't need to carry anything around with you it very comfortable to ride in. Defiantly not a luxury vehicle, but has everything to make it enjoyable for long road trips or to go down the block to the market.
When people ask us if we like our Element, there is not hesitation and we say "absolutely, would trade it for a million years"! Jan 24, 2013

I love this car for its laid-back and versatile use. It has been a wonderful, dependable vehicle. It is inexpensive to have dealer work done on it. Very adaptable and if you enjoy a vehicle with lots of uses, this is it. I once loaded a wall oven in the back of it, not just any vehicle can do this. The Honda Element is typical Honda - quality and reliability, but unlike typical Honda, the Element provides a truly unique vehicle platform. The flexibility and cargo options are endless - seats fold up, seats fold flat, seats can even be removed to create a cargo-van type area. The motor is peppy and makes the car fun to drive. This car hits the sweet spot for me, One of the drop down questions on this survey is "What did you mainly use this car for?"...I could check all of the options (commuting to work, family transportation, recreation, and utility)...that's what makes this car so nice.
Commute to work -easy to park, great stereo, excellent visibility, better than Truck/Large SUV gas mileage, drives fine at 75, kick ass stereo
Recreation -throw bikes in the back, day at the beach (no sand in the carpet), Camping, Kids games
Around the House - Hauls to the Dump, Runs to Home Depot, picking up large items at garage sales/craigs list, pets to the vet
There's nothing like it on the road today, for a niche car it definetly does many things very well. The ride is harsher and there is more outside noise than my 04 Camry, but these shortcomings are a result of the functional design.Oct 26, 2011

I love my Ele! Such a cool lil fella. lol It is the PERFECT ride for dog lovers like us! Very useful ride. I love the steering controls for the stereo. We got all the camping gear but dont use it now. Visability is the best! I wish they had put heated leather seats in them. WHY did Honda discontinue this vehicle? I can honestly haul as much as I ever hauled in my old F150 with this thing. The mileage is substantially better. It's a quirky little car, but it's built well. Exactly what I need rather than what I WANT. Extraoridinarily low maintenance and good MPG for something shaped like an ice cream truck. (27 mpg.) The dogs like it. Road noise at highway speeds high. Fully loaded....added extra features to it to make it fully loaded. Fog lamps, AM/FM CD XM stereo with 5 speakers. The seats are easy to take out. It is very easy to clean the floor and seats. Very good on gas. It's a fun car to drive. You can get the car in two forms with or with out...side pannel in grey and black for that sport look. You can buy it with a sunroof and a rack on top. Rough idle ,stalls when 1st start
a rough idle when the car is first started. check engine light reads 2ND cyleder misfire. changed oxygen sensors , coil, added 2 bottles of dry gas, cleaned injectors, new plugs. My mechanic fixed the starter problem and when I asked to take the broken part back home he said I couldn't bc he said they charged him $30 fee for whatever reason. He said I could take a picture of it but not take my old part back. Sounds fishy.
