Defining the concept of an acquired taste, the 2006 Civic’s styling is a love it or hate it proposition. A jarring departure from the previous Civic, the new car looks more futuristic than Marty McFly’s DeLorean. From the short and stubby hood to the sedan’s weirdly shaped taillights, the Civic is just as much about (questionable) style as it is substance.
Honda doesn’t stop with the exterior design. Inside, the dashboard, instrumentation, and controls represent a complete departure from established norms.
A digital speedometer and fuel gauge are housed in an odd hump near the base of the dashboard, putting vital information directly in the driver’s line of sight. In the location where gauges would normally go, the Civic has a giant tachometer. Stereo and climate controls appear to be integrated parts of the design rather than components that get bolted into it, while the transmission shifter and parking brake lever live in a pod jutting out of the center console.
Even the rather undersized steering wheel is unusual. And from the driver’s seat, the new Civic’s low dashboard, front quarter window glass, and thin windshield pillars create an airy and expansive feeling unlike any other small car on the market.

As was true before, the new 2006 Civic comes with a variety of powertrain choices, and power and fuel economy improve across the board.
Most Civics have a new 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine making 140 horsepower paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. A natural gas version of this engine is offered in the Civic GX, and it generates 113 hp. The GX employs a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), according to Honda.
Naturally, the performance-tuned Civic Si returns, now a 2-door coupe instead of the previous 3-door hatchback. It has a 197-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, a 6-speed manual gearbox, and a limited-slip front differential. The Si also boasts a sport-tuned suspension and bigger wheels and tires.
For maximum fuel economy, get the Civic Hybrid, now rated to return 50 mpg in combined driving. Using a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, a battery pack, and an electric motor, this version of the Civic is good for 110 combined horsepower. Like the Civic GX, it uses a CVT.
Obviously, the Civic drives differently depending on the version. The common thread between them is a light, effortless, refined dynamic that makes each Civic enjoyable to drive in its own way. The hardest thing to get used to, aside from the unusual instrumentation, is the tiny steering wheel, which looks and feels too small.

Regardless of body style, the new Civic features comfortable front seats separated by an innovative new multi-function storage console with lots of nooks, crannies, and bins. The console sits low, and in combination with the minimalist dashboard and all of the glass, the Civic feels positively huge.
Wider than it used to be, the new 2006 Civic sedan is more accommodating for rear-seat passengers, too. The coupe, however, loses backseat room due to its more rakish design.
Trunk space measures 12 cubic feet for the Civic sedan, while the coupe loses just a bit of volume to come in at 11.5 cubic feet. Hybrids offer 10.4 cubes, a reduction necessary to accommodate the car’s battery pack. The Civic GX has its compressed natural gas tank to contend with, reducing trunk volume to just 6.0 cubic feet.

For 2006, the Civic takes a big step forward in terms of onboard technology. One glance at the dashboard instrumentation will convince you of that.
As far as infotainment is concerned, satellite radio is now available for the car, and top versions offer a navigation system with voice recognition technology. A CD player is standard on all but the base DX trim level, and both steering wheel controls for the audio system and an auxiliary audio input jack are available.
In addition to these improvements, the Civic Hybrid boasts next-generation Integrated Motor Assist technology that allows the gasoline engine to shut down more frequently in order to maximize fuel economy.

In a big step forward for safety, the new Civic employs what Honda calls its Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure. Essentially, this means it is specifically engineered to either absorb or deflect crash energy during a collision, in turn, better protecting the car’s occupants.
Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, dual front airbags, and side curtain airbags. Active front-seat head restraints are also new for 2006, designed to help prevent whiplash when the Civic is rear-ended.
In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Civic sedan does a great job of protecting occupants. The Civic coupe, unfortunately, earns no better than a 3-star rating for side-impact protection for the driver.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) agrees, giving the Civic sedan a Top Safety Pick rating for 2006. Due to the Civic coupe’s Acceptable rather than Good showing in side-impact testing, it does not earn the same praise from the IIHS.

Arguably, the 2006 Honda Civic is one of the most refined and sophisticated cars in its class, and that comes at a price. You’ll spend more than $15,000 for a base Civic DX, and nearly $25,000 for a Civic Hybrid with navigation.
However, unlike equally advanced or high-quality models like the Mazda Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf/Jetta, if you buy and keep the Civic for a decade, it’s likely to still look and feel like a modern automobile. Such is the price of progress.

I’m happy with my purchase. It did need an oil change and new tires which is being done today. The clock won’t reset but apparently there will be an automatic reset on August 22nd of this year. So all in all it’s a good car for my local driving. Aug 12, 2022

I loved the economy aspect...better gas mileage than I expected and I love that it's a 4-door, too, with reasonable leg room in the back PLUS a nice sized trunk! Very roomy, especially the back seats. Big trunk for a small car. Very quick off the line. Exterior looks good, but a matter of preference. Handles like a go-kart, altho' the steering is a bit overassisted. A bit of road and wind noise, but nothing too annoying. Phenominal gas mileage, especially highway, getting 36-40 mpg. Very low cost to maintain. reliable as sunrise. 71K miles on mine without a single rattle or problem, also feels very solid and well built.Jan 23, 2010

I bought a Metallic Blue 2006 Civic Sedan LX Automatic. 2006 was the first year when the new generation Civic was redesigned. It looked AWESOME and I feel in love with it immediately. Peppy engine, especially with the 5-Speed. Proprietary radio/sound system kinda sucks, as you can't swap out for a new head unit. Clutch pedal has developed a squeak that makes me want to drive into a tree sometimes. Awesome handling for a 4-Door economy car.Oct 13, 2009

The Honda Civic is the best car I have ever owned. The quality of the build is excellent because it has never been in the shop for repair. The performance is very good for a small four cylinder because I have owned v6's with less power. The gas mileage is very good because it averages around 38 miles per gallon. For a daily driver type car, performance is good and gives a peppy "kick" when you want more spirited driving. Build quality is excellent, as expected from a Honda. The car looks great! Fuel economy not too good in city driving, but can hit 13km/L with highway driving.Aug 20, 2009

I love this car. It has great handling and the car is reliable because it is a Honda.The only rattle in the car right now is the glove compartment shakes every now and then. Honda did a great job in designing this car. It looks nice and clean cut. I would recommend this car to a friend because of its reliability, performance, and the fact that it it is just fun to drive around. The Civic is a very pleasing and practical economy
car, but no more.
Straight-line performance is adequate. The 1.8-
liter engine needs to be kept above 3000 rpm for
best results, although with a 6800 rpm redline it's
pretty flexible. At town speeds below 50 mph, there
is rarely a power deficit, but you will wish for more
power on the interstate, especially above 80 mph.
The 5-speed gearbox is good, with a relatively
positive feel and low effort but long shifter throws.
It does not match up to the 6-speed available in
the Si. The clutch has a very short travel, which
results in some rough starts until you get used to
it, but is low-effort enough that stop-and-go is
easy.
Handling is the car's strongest attribute. The
steering is extremely light, but precise and
communicative. The suspension offers excellent
body control through bumps and a taut, but not
harsh, ride. Like any front-drive car, consistent
understeer is the only thing happening at the limit,
but if you drive at the limit you should not have a
Civic. The stock Michelins are biased toward a soft
ride and should be replaced with something better,
although I have not.
The excellent handling and lightweight feel make
the car very satisfying in city traffic. I notice this
most when I drive rental cars; after my Civic, they
always feel heavy, ponderous, and reluctant to
change direction or stop.
As usual with economy cars, there is a fair degree
of both engine and tire noise on tap, although wind
noise is unusually absent even above 80 mph.
Braking is adequate with the 4-wheel discs on the
EX. (I would not want to buy an LX with its rear
drum brakes.) The pedal will fade with repeated
hard stops, and the ABS kicks in a bit too quickly.
The interior is quite roomy for this class. Seats are
firm and fairly comfortable, although not up to the
standard of the Accord/TSX/TL. The interior
materials are good for the class, but cannot match
up to those used on larger and more expensive
cars. As is typical of Honda and Acura, interior
parts have a lightweight feel that may bother those
used to Mercedes-Benz solidity (for example),
although the actual build quality is good and the
parts are very durable. My car has an unfortunate
rattle from somewhere in the moonroof area which
I have been unable to isolate but feels otherwise
very solid.
Thoughtful Honda touches include plenty of
closeable storage, two power ports, and a well-
placed auxiliary input (right next to one power port;
EX only) for the stereo. Strangely, there is no
sunglass holder. The moonroof (EX only) only
slides; it does not tilt for ventilation. The driver's
seat is height-adjustable and features adjustable
lumbar support.
The two-level dashboard is the car's most
controversial feature, but I like it. I love the digital
speedo above the wheel, although a redundant
analog speedo would also be helpful. The large
central tach is nice as well. Secondary controls are
typical of Honda in that they are relatively intuitive
but feature many buttons and look a bit cluttered.
The gas mileage is quite good. Tanks have ranged
from a low of 19 mpg (1- or 2- mile city trips for
the entire tank) to a high of 42 mpg (driving at 50-
55 mph on the highway). Typical mileage in my
almost all city driving is about 27-28. The car has
required no unscheduled maintenance and only two
oil changes as scheduled maintenance.
I would definitely recommend the Civic to someone
looking for a driver-centered economy car,
provided they understand it is not a luxury or

I have driven this car for nearly three years and over
60,000 miles and it still feels new--it is a very solid
car for a non-luxury make. While the engine is small,
(1.8L,140hp) the manual transmission allows this car
to get up to speed when it needs to. The small engine
also leads to great mileage -- as much as 38mpg for
straight highway driving although I typically average in
the mid-30's. Best of all, after three years, I still have

This car is amazing. simply amazing.
It has a super easy to drive stick shift, and I really know what

Great performance, and speed. With gas prices these days a

The design is simply amazing; it has the mystique of a futuristic machine!!! The speedometer is simply amazing,
accurate and flexible. The seat is amazingly comfortable, and
I'm a short person,I would know about great "little people"

The braking is AMAZING. Truly amazing, it is reliable and
responsive.
This car, no repairs needed what so ever, and WE GOT IT
USED!

This car is very nimble due to its 2780lb weight, but is plagued by an undersized 1.8 l engine and very poor torque numbers. Not a performance car, but a very decent everyday driver getting 40 mpg highway and 35 city. It has enough pickup for heavy interstate driving, but just barely. Jun 09, 2008

Interior : good interior with unified colore in the full optioned model, comfy seatings with good leather finish, roomy, good gages that eases driving, marginal CD-player that doesn't support MP3 and doesn't view any details about the tracks (not even the elapsed time of the track!) but with very good sound produced by exceptional speakers with good deep bass sound.
Exterior: very cool modern looking with only one bad side: no tail wing.
Handling : sharp handling and very stable on cornres makes it a very good car of it's catigory and a very good comfy suspension that absorbs shocks and bumps like an ace, with one down side: the steering is a little bit heavy at slow speeds.
Performance: Honda's I4 1.8 iVITEC engine that produces 140hp at 6700 rpm that accelerates 0-62 in 10 seconds with it's 5 speed Auto GearBox, this car gives exceptional Performance per consupt Fuel.Jan 08, 2008

Honda Civic 2006 LX 1.8 ltr Sedan
I recently replaced the a/c compressor, condenser, evaporator core and expansion valve, passenger side door actuator, and driver side HVAS blend door , along with the high pressure a/c switch and my air is still not blowing colder than about 68 degrees and it fluctuates from the high 60's to mid 70's what else can it be the lines have been replaced as well I am at a loss as to what else I can do to get ice cold air
