Ford knows it’s hard to mess with a successful formula, but it had to update the Explorer eventually. The 2006 model is more refined and more useful than any Explorer before it.
The 2006 Ford Explorer has been given an overhaul that has improved on nearly every aspect of its performance and styling. The new sport-utility has updated steering, revamped suspension, and new brakes. The result is a vehicle that has a better ride, less interior noise, and more responsive performance than the SUV that preceded it.
The Ford Explorer is aimed at new car buyers that likely want to tow but also want the added creature comforts afforded by an SUV over a pickup truck. It competes against other sport utility vehicles, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, Land Rover LR3, Nissan Pathfinder, and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The updated Explorer has taken on a much more F-150-like look up front, though it’s scaled down for the smaller vehicle. The lineup comes with four different grille types, depending on the trim level, and features more chrome, bolder exterior lighting features, and large Explorer badging all around. The overall look and feel of the new Explorer are that of a big box, though the more rounded front end breaks up the styling a bit.
Inside, the SUV is all-new in nearly every way. Buttons, controls, materials, and even the steering wheel have been redesigned to be more modern and cleaner than before. Many models feature dark synthetic wood trim inside, and the Eddie Bauer Edition trim has expensive-feeling real wood trim pieces. The dash is one weak spot, as its shiny texture in places can reflect off the windshield and obstruct views. The front seats, as in previous versions, are wide, deep, well-padded, and supremely comfortable.
The second-row seats can be ordered as either a bench or captain’s chairs, but in either configuration, the seats are deep, well-padded, and comfortable. The available third-row seats are mounted a few inches higher than the first two rows to allow passengers in the “way-back” a better view, but the seats’ overall lack of padding and legroom makes them a tough sell for adults.

If your family needs towing capabilities on top of the comfort and flexibility of an SUV, the Explorer is one of the most capable choices on the market. Either of its engines is able to get the job done, but it’s the V8 engine that is the true workhorse. The V8 and six-speed automatic transmission combine to deliver a maximum towing capacity of 7,300 pounds, which matches many pickup trucks and makes the Explorer an all-around weekend warrior toy hauler.
Ford’s updates for the 2006 model year have made the Explorer quieter, smoother, and more refined to drive. It’s still got a truck-like body-on-frame design, but it manages that setup with a well-tuned independent suspension system that keeps the wheels on the road and handles nearly any road condition with ease.
The new Explorer’s steering has a nice weight at most speeds, with assist at low speeds that helps greatly with parking and maneuvering in tight places. Braking is stronger and requires less pedal input to generate the same stopping force.
The Explorer’s off-road performance is more than acceptable for the occasional camping trip or trail drive, but it’s not suitable for hardcore rock crawling or similar driving situations.
With two-wheel drive and a V6 powertrain, the Explorer is rated at 14/19/16 mpg city/hwy/combined. Those numbers change to 13/19/15 mpg with four-wheel drive.
With the V8 on board, the Explorer returns gas mileage numbers of 13/19/15 mpg with 2WD and 13/18/15 mpg with 4WD. Those figures sound severe, and they are, but they’re not completely out of line with the rest of the competition.
The Chevy Trailblazer, for instance, returns similar numbers – 15 or 16 mpg depending on the engine. The Trailblazer’s engines are more powerful than the Explorer’s, and the Chevy’s slightly larger. Both vehicles’ fuel economy suffers when towing, so it’s important for buyers to know that fuel bills may become a major pain point over time.

The Explorer combines stout towing and payload capacities with a comfortable interior and plenty of space. That’s a winning formula for any SUV and is a big reason why Ford sells more Explorers than almost any other SUV on the market.
Ford worked on updating the Explorer with details that make it more useful without ruining the character of the vehicle. The rear seats fold down flatter than previous models, so it’s easier to carry large loads, a quieter ride makes the Explorer more pleasant to drive on long trips, and the top trims’ premium materials inside such as premium leather seats give an upscale feel to the vehicle that makes them seem more expensive than they are.

The Explorer XLS comes standard with keyless entry, cruise control, an electronic message center, a compass, a thermometer, power windows and door locks, power mirrors, a 12-volt power outlet, an AM/FM stereo with a single CD player, and an MP3 player. The Eddie Bauer trim adds a trip computer, and with the optional Luxury Package, the trim gets a six-disc changer and an audiophile sound system. Options include a $1,295 DVD system, steering wheel controls, DVD-based navigation system for $1,500, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The 2006 Explorer’s crash test ratings leave much to be desired. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated it ‘Good’ for moderate overlap front crashworthiness, ‘Acceptable’ for side crashworthiness, and ‘Poor’ for head restraints/seats. The organization noted that side impact airbags greatly helped to protect the dummies’ heads from impact.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Explorer five stars in every category except rollover prevention, where it earned three stars. That’s not an unusual outcome for an SUV, because the increased ride height and high center of gravity can lead to easier rollovers in some situations.
Standard safety equipment includes roll stability control, side curtain airbags, an adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, tire pressure monitoring, front airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, antilock brakes, and a vehicle security system.

With a starting price of around $27,000 and a generous list of standard features, the Explorer has a leg up on most of its competition. Ford has done a good job of including enough extra features into each trim level to make them a worthy step up over the trim level below. The company also did a great job at pricing trim upgrades reasonably. Moving up a trim level adds between $1,000 and $3,000, well worth the cost to get additional content. Ford’s move to include more for less is one that will pay off in an SUV segment with buyers that are more cost-conscious than ever before.
Fuel economy is the Explorer’s Achilles heel, where some versions dip down as far as 13 mpg in the city. That plays against the SUV’s otherwise excellent price model and may rain on buyers’ parade when they see the numbers adding up at the gas pump.

Overall an excellent choice for a 4WD vehicle. Good size, not too big or too small. V-8 engine has plenty of power and the 4WD system works very easily. Comfortable vehicle for long trips on the highway. No bounce or jitter of some 4WD vehicles. I believe the independent rear suspension really benefits the overall ride and handling of this vehicle.Oct 03, 2013

I love everything about this vehicle except the gas mileage. It handles great in bad weather, is roomy enough for my family of 5, and I think the mid-size SUV is perfect. Easier to fit into tight places than the Expedition, yet you still sit up high in traffic, and you can haul more than the Escape.Dec 06, 2012

Overall this car is elegant and sporty at the same time. It has a luxurious feel with the leatherette seats, the wood trim, all electric seats, heated seats etc. I will buy one again, just upgrading to a newer model. Oct 16, 2012

drove to Boston is was nice in the handling and acceleration. A couple of noises. the gas mileage was around 21 mpg. The vehicle is comfortable driving and there are some blind spots as most cars. You feel safe driving this car.Aug 15, 2012

It was an upgrade from 1997 Explorer 4x4WD, as for the transmission, engine & mechanical overview, i would certainly give it priority, but as for the interior body & exterior body quality, it's very disappointing.
Dash has hollow plastic parts, front & back bumper is hollow plastic, feels really cheap in compare to the older models. While driving, i can hear engine sound & air sound, which was the least i was expecting.Apr 26, 2012

Bought my first explorer in 1993 and every car save one since has also been an Explorer. Two of the Explorers were purchased new and my last two were used. We travel back and forth from Boston to New Hampshire and have never been concerned about the weather as our Explorers have always gotten us to our destination as planned. Nov 26, 2011

The overall competence of the Explorer is what we appreciate most about it. Taking grandsons on all day excursions, a day trip to Tahoe or pulling our trailer camping it just gets the job done with little fuss. It is very comfortable. I am over 6'1" and 215 and the seats are comfortable and supportive.
Having the radiator issue was frustrating on a modern vehicle at such low mileage.
I was very surprised at the compact turning radius. It does it give it capabilities on Forest service roads that I like. If it had skid plates it would be perfect. Nov 04, 2011

Good Car all around, Acceleration, breaking and handling all very good.
Breaking obviously weaker compared to the BMW. Black with chrome
foot rails as well as chrome wheels. Paying for gas sucks but worth it.

Performance the 4.6 is rated at just under 300 hp along with the six speed automatic makes for strong performing vehicle.
Build Quality has been very good the SUV has 87,000 kms with no issues.
With the switch to CUV the vehicle is starting to look dated but we are still happy with it's appearance.
Cost of owner ship no maitenance except regular preventative. Mileage is what you would expect I commute 35 kms each way to work about half and half city highway and I get about 13 liters per 100 kms or about 21 mpg.

i love the heated seats! nice and toasty in the winter weather. the only thing i would change bout this Explorer is the Wheels and addition of Fords Sync/ Navigation system.
The only problem i have had with my Explorer is, it miss fired once and fouled out a spark plug. other than Regular oil changes it has been problem free for 84000 miles.Dec 22, 2008

Great for hauling kids, dogs, bikes, surfboards and general yard stuff. Very utilitarian, a lot better on the gas than you'd think...about 18 in town...and that's stop and go. Great on the highway, around 22-25 mpg. Very stable, handles a lot better than my 1999 Explorer. All in all, a good buy, a good brand, a good truck. Looks sharp, but needs a re-design on the interior functionality. IPOD docks, phones, etc. It's my third Explorer, but, I'm ready for a little hot car next. I'm getting old.Aug 29, 2008

We love this vehicle also! We have always had an Explorer. This Ford blue in color replaced a black one, we use this car in town and also for travel and have plenty of room. It is great when hauling kids around because there is a third row seat for plenty of room.Jul 23, 2008

this was moms car that i drove regularly for close to a year. when i first was driving it i thought it was awesome but after having my fusion for awhile now i now think it was only an ok vehicle. handled real well for such a large truck and was a beast in the snow. good torque for around town but only so-so power for merging and passing. The 2006 year was a milestone for the Ford Motor Company with the redesign of the Ford Explorer line of mid-sized suvs. I had a 1998 V8 Explorer before this car came into my life, and I can not see what I ever saw in the old one. The designing on the interior is awesome (looking much like the F-150's) and the exterior is beautiful. The drive is completely smooth and Ford did an excellent job reducing the noise of the cabin almost to an inaudible amount on the highway. Safety is a must too. The Explorer comes with RSC which basically gives you stability in sudden turn scenarios, and has one of the best airbag systems in the industry. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants to enjoy driving and wants the best suv on the road. If you drive this car, you will never be able to drive another main brand suv again.Feb 06, 2008

Ever since I got the family 2006 Explorer Limited and long since we purchased the vehicle, the CD player never worked (That we know of). CD's get stuck in the player and it doesn't play or eject. Radio only works. Any possible fixes other than replacing it??? If I were to replace it, where could I get a replacement?

I have a Ford Explorer XLT 2006. I am still confused on the 4x4 auto. I read above that it will go automatically into 4x4 if it senses it needs it. I was going up a snowy steep hill and pushed 4x4 auto, nothing happened, the button did NOT depress. Is it supposed to depress? If it is automatically in 4x4auto, then when do I push 4x4 high, while going up the steep hill? Does it automatically go off, when you shut off the engine? Thanks so much
