The Nissan Pathfinder goes through a rite of passage in 2005, leaving the kiddie pool to join the big boy SUVs during adult swim. Having grown somewhat outdated, the 2005 Pathfinder gets bigger (six inches longer) and more powerful. Its length means it now offers three rows of seats for the first time. Its power comes from a 4.0-liter 270-hp V6 engine that can tow up to 6,000 pounds. A new 5-speed automatic transmission replaces the old 4-speed.
Built on the truck-based platform of the Armada and Titan, the Pathfinder has a lot more surface muscle to match what's under the hood. A new rear independent suspension is supposed to improve handling, making it feel less like a truck. It comes in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, in four trims. The base XE is fully loaded with power locks and windows, ABS brakes, traction control, a new stability control, cruise, and air conditioning. The SE and SE Off Road are the sportier packages, and the Off-Road lets you take the Pathfinder into the woods behind the grocery store, offering skid plates, Hill Descent Control, and stronger shocks. The LE trim is the luxury model, with heated leather seats.
Both second and third rows fold flat to expand on the tiny cargo space (16 cubic feet) when the seats are up in the 2005 Pathfinder. In all but the LE trim, the front passenger seat also folds down for longer objects. What it lacks in rear cargo room, it makes up for in the amount of storage compartments and cupholders.
The 2005 Pathfinder was due for a change, and the extra power and hauling capacity are appreciated by its owners. The handling is smooth and easy, and owners love all the storage versatility and the flexibility of seating configurations. However, the third row is unsuitable for adults and is difficult to squeeze into. The small cargo area is a disappointment, as is the cheap-looking plastic interior. The 2005 Pathfinder's truck platform makes the ride somewhat rough and noisy. Gas mileage is not good, but about what you would expect in an SUV.

I actually found this for my mother, she needed a vehicle with a 3rd row seat and I had no issues when I found my 370z on here about 5 years ago. I love the layout of the site. We took a lot of preemptive measures with it's maintenance when issues started to hit the internet. That aside, it is very roomy and space efficient. It could use more storage compartments in the back, but there are some located under the second row seats. Sep 22, 2014

The PF is a well thought out, properly engineered machine. There is not a lot in the way of frills here, but there is plenty of strength and reliability to go around. It has a very attractive body, the interior is surprisingly roomy and convenient (ignoring the third row), it has a good deal of power for a 4.0L V6. It can get through unexpected weather or terrain but would not be the ideal off-roader. Gas milage is ok...I truly believe that there is a lot of over emphasis on milage. Many people are paying higher prices for less reliable, less capable vehicles that will need replacement much sooner. Here is a 17mpg 2005 PF (yes lame milage rating). But it will run forever with minimal maintenance cost. Certainly past 300,000 if proper maintenance is continued.Sep 17, 2014

I did like that this vehicle is a good size - not too big, not too small. I loved how it handled and that it was overall a smooth ride.
I disliked, however, that it was not a very reliable car when it came down to the nitty gritty. Maintenance and repairs are extremely costly. I had this vehicle for 4 years and other than routine oil changes and check-ups, it was in the shop 2-3 times a year for transmission and radiator issues, weird noises, and occasionally aggressive jolting.
Definitely a vehicle that is better with lesser mileage, and becomes a hassle with the more mileage it has.Aug 27, 2013

While it is quirky, overall excellent. Handling in snow/ice and off road (yes - a lot!) is superb. It is a truck, and tows wonderfully. Stereo is very good, nav package is OK - mostly because it is quirky. But it beats the heck out of the one in my wife's Cadillac.
Third row seat is useless, but back is great! Two hunting dogs, guns, and gear for South Dakota and drive. No real problems other than climate control system. 45,000 miles in it, and at 115,000 it is holding up very well.Sep 13, 2012

Nissan will not back up their product and take care of the consumer. The car is dangerous to drive! Nissan Consumer Affairs are awful to deal with and do NOT have the consumers BEST interest and safety in mind. My car is only 6 years old and the engine failed after 3 and now the transmission and radiator.Oct 26, 2011

I LOVE this vehicle! It handles amazingly in every situation, snow, traffic, ice, whatever...it accelerates swiftly, brakes safely, handles like a dream, especially for it's size! It is of the highest quality, has never needed repairs, no squeaks or rattles, it LOVES to tow, just starts to go to work when hooked up to anything! It is a VERY safe vehicle and is perfect for the Colorado lifestyle! It is GORGEOUS in appearance, a high-end look at an affordable price. It is very inexpensive to own, unlike Toyota and such, it doesn't have required HIGH COST servicing at 30, 60, 90, 120K miles, etc..., It ONLY needs the regular oil changes and spark plugs at 95K miles Can you believe it?! it also sports a chain drive timing belt which is the main cost saving factor. NO expensive changes of the timing belt, water pump etc at about 120K miles like other brands... It gets good MPG for it's class, is in FABULOUS condition with a very beautiful interior, numerous convenient features, well appointed storage spaces and more. It is sporty and fun to drive while having many of the appointments of a comfort vehicle...and is the MOST gorgeous of the colors offered! :)

Performance- acceleration is good, braking works well, handling is good for an SUV
Build Quality-there have been a couple recalls on it but other than that not bad
Appearance-it keeps looking smaller and smaller every day haha
Cost of Ownership-not the best gas mileage, maintenance is not a problem

Starts intermittently
We have a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. Back in September it started starting intermittently. So far we have changed the starter, fuel pump, and crank sensor...it still is starting intermittently. Sometimes it will crank over and sometimes it just turn all the dash lights on with no start or crank. Looking for any other options. We have taken it to get tested at the auto store. Nothing is showing up.
