The perennial runner-up to the F-150 in terms of sales, the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 adds a hybrid Extended model this year. Though the combination of a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 and electric motor doesn't power the car, it does improve fuel economy by 10% by shutting the engine down during stops. The hybrid is available only in the West and in Florida. Other new features for 2005 include larger 17-inch wheels, a new sunroof and garage opener package for Extended and Crew cabs, and the loss of 4-wheel Quadrasteer on rear-wheel-drive versions. Rear drum brakes replace the disc brakes except on the hybrid trim.
The 2005 Silverado 1500 comes in either rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, in Regular (2-seater) or Extended and Crew Cabs (which seat 4 in two rows). Trims start with the basic Work Truck and move through the Base to the better-equipped LS and LT. The half-ton pickup also comes in a heavy duty SS version, featuring a 345-hp, 6.0-liter V8 with 380 lb-ft of torque and 20-inch wheels. The Z71 is an off-roading version, with stronger shocks, skid plates, and bigger stabilizer bars. There are a variety of powerful V8 engine choices paired with either a 4-speed HydraMatic or 5-speed manual transmission. These include a 4.3-liter, 195-hp V8; a 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8; and a 5.4-liter, 295-hp V8. Pickup bed length is either a short 6.5 feet or longer 8 feet, and payload capacity is around 1,200 pounds.
The 2005 Silverado 1500 is a solid work truck with plenty of power, according to owners. The Extended and Crew Cabs are also nice for families, particularly the LS and LT versions that offer more creature comforts inside (the Crew Cab has 4 full-size doors, while the Extended has narrow, reverse-opening rear doors). Drivers also like its 4WD performance and say the truck handles more like a car. Downsides include gas mileage, which hovers in the teens, chipping exterior paint, a bland and plastic-looking interior, and a jerky transmission.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 feel positively about this truck. They appreciate its reliability, strong performance, and good power for towing and hauling. Many liked the spacious interior and straightforward design, especially in the WT model. However, some drivers expressed discontent with the gas mileage and certain minor mechanical issues. Overall, it seems to be a sturdy choice for those needing a dependable work truck."
This truck was a limo, a moving truck, a hauler, a camping tent, a bus, there is nothing that this truck can't do. It's been extremely reliable. After 135000 miles the only thing I have replaced was the thermostat. If I was not planning on having a large family I would keep mine.
March 22, 2013I like the simplicity of the 05 Silverado WT model, the lack of electronically controlled functions is appealing. It is exactly what I was looking for. The value of the vehicle was reasonable and affordable for me personally. Nothing was missing on the truck apart from an updated radio. I would compare this to other truck makes and models around the same model year, as most has similar features.
March 5, 2022Hauled our family around in comfort. Drove good in the winter. Just was not up to the task of hauling our camper. Found out we do not like clamshell doors for the kids. Overall a good truck just not for us.

February 20, 2010Loved it. It was the truck I always wanted. Lots of power, good handling, comfortable, looked good. The only downfall was the poor mileage. Its the reason I sold it. I couldn't justify the money for gas anymore
April 20, 2008Loved this truck. Hauled and towed many things. Very dependable, easy ride no engine troubles whatsoever. Would definitely buy again but without the half doors. I traded her in at 132000 miles and she has never let me down. I did basic maintenance and had a champ of a truck for a decade.
December 12, 2014Always starts, runs and drivers like a dream. The heated seats are awesome. Very spacious interior. Rides like a car but tough as a Chevy truck. The sun roof in the truck is cool and nice on those spring nights.
January 27, 2014This truck is a great first car and daily driver. Its got plenty of power and will get up and go when is asked to. The 4.3L V6 has got plenty of towing power as well. Its very fun to drive but rides kind of rough because of the shortwheel base. I would suggest this truck to anyone who is looking for a good looking daily driver.
August 1, 2010Its a great truck, good power, 4wd, safe, what more could you want.
April 29, 2008The truck is 3 years old now with no issues other than a tiny rattle in the dashboard and minor "truck scratches" in and near the bed. All the power to tow, haul and surprise some 'Stangs.
April 1, 2008Great truck! Love the looks of the outside, inside is pretty plain even for a almost loaded vehicle. Runs and drives great. Chevrolet should really consider making the Z71 package a little bit taller truck. You buy a 4X4 and it sits too low like a 2wd.
