2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 Reviews, Pricing & Specs

I haven't ever taken it to the track but the acceleration, power, and sound are addicting. As far as quality I love the bare bones approach at performance though its a little loud on the highway and theres a few odds and ends that are a bit flimsy. The appearance is awesome, I love it thought it needs a new set of wheels and some coilovers to lower it. Gas mileage is in the 20's so its a little underpar. The engine runs great but small bits and pieces have needed to be replaced. This car is definitely fun to drive, fits like a glove, and surprises many.Nov 23, 2012

Great fun car. Lot's of power for what it is from the showroom, and easy to upgrade to surprising amount of power. Got 30mpg on last trip out of town. Should average about 26mpg around home. So for the power, gas mileage, and low cost to own and mod it's a great little car as long as you don't mind the fact that it looks like a Neon but runs like a sports car. Dec 01, 2011

I love this car. Wish I was a bit taller so it'd be easier for me to drive, but my hubby does most of that. It handles great, even better now that we have aftermarket suspension. Gets up and GOES lol. This car is a blast to drive and race. So smooth. Love beating mustangs with it. Currentl only been defeated by other SRT-4's with stages. Have raced plenty of good cars but none come close. Only repairs we have done is basic mantience from stupid previous owners, things like brakes, tires, small things like that.Feb 19, 2010

Acceleration is great. Braking is great. Handles like its on rails with all the suspension upgrades. Has over 85k. Still runs strong, nothing major mechanically has gone wrong with it. Just do routine mainteanance. Interior is fine. Exterior looks great from my POV. A ton of other manufacturers copied off of the exterior styling. Look at the new 4dr cobalts, Pontiac G6's just to name a few. Rear end styling is ver remininsant of the neons. I get around 25mpg city and highway. Car is very fun to drive.Dec 31, 2009

It has high limits, high potential, has a strong powertrain, is well rounded, and fun to drive. Motor mounts and suspension bushings should be upgraded for true enthusiasts. Great power delivery / fast turbo spool. Build quality is decent, seats have some fabric blemishes and sunroof issues. About 27mpg with a mix of reasonable and aggressive driving. Very fun to modify to dial in the handling potential. Power is just too easy to obtain.Oct 30, 2009

0-60 in 6 seconds. Quarter mile in 13.7 seconds. Super fast! It is a neon so it doesn't have an amazing amount of gadgets but it is built to impress. Interior and exterior is very nice on the eyes. I get at least 20 mpg city and as high as 27 mpg highway depending on how I drive. It doesn't not cost much to maintain but it does need high end oil, and premium (93 octane) gas. I would recommend this car to anyone that prefers performance and function over gadgets and plush interiors.Oct 06, 2009

I purchased this car unwittingly, only to discover I got a lot more than I thought. For the price (factoring in other new rides, yes we all know you can supe up a used car on the cheap), it has been the single best performing and most reliable car I've owned. I had an 03 for 25k with zero issues, and I currently own an 04 with 140k, with the only issues so far being the ever common throttle positioning sensor wire needing to be extended (some come too short from the factory, causing them to either pull on the socket under torque, or wear against other things, also due to torque.), and a bad fuel pump that failed at around 75k (the car did not die the pump was symptomatic and the car was never out of commission). A little disappointing, but I replaced it with a better one for 120 on my own time. Acceleration: Very good, very torquey Braking: The brakes are amazing. Some newer cars had better ones, but this car was stopping in line with some Ferraris back in 2003. Handling: Stock handling really isn't that great. One set of coilovers and wheels with good rubber will put you in a very very good position however. Build Quality: In my experiences, mechanically sound. Some squeaks at age, but nothing terrible. Interior looks brand new outside of my personal abuses. Appearance: Many of us owners are partial to our cars. I'm not a huge fan of the car's looks honestly. I removed the wing and lowered it as quickly as I could. Wheels are nearly a must, stockers are 6". Stock rubber isn't too shabby, but is one of the quicker handling improvements you can do. Gas Mileage: Some people have issues... I believe they are leadfoots. I rarely get below 25mpg a tank unless I am boosting early and often. If I am controlled, my tanks get between 28-30mpg, and occasionally with extra highway driving I have hit 33mpg. Jun 13, 2009

Fast, Head-Turner, Turbocharged Performance modifications to date: AGP Wastegate Actuator (tuned to 20 LBS. boost) K&N Air Filter Custom Short-Throw Shifter (approx. 50% Reduction) Digital Turbo Timer "Getting in a race with a neon is like getting in a fight with a girl. If you Win you can't brag about it, and if you lose you hope nobody finds out" Put your foot down, hold on tight, and do nothing but grin as the the turbo gulps in 20 pounds of boost, the G-forces build exponentially, watch the boost guage flicker as you throw it into the next gear at 6000 RPM's with the Blow-off-Valve music to your ears and watch the horizon get smaller and smaller as your tunnel vision begins and the world becomes a blur. Pros: Fun to drive, fast, not your grandma's neon, potential to be done up to 11 second 1/4 mile passes. Cons: It is a Neon, There is no Autobahn in Alberta:( Wheel hop with stock motor mounts, FWD, Made to go fast in a straight line--not corner, tires do not last long, hard not to speed, slip the clutch wrong and you'll go sideways in a trail of tire smoke, its a cop magnet, PTB (Part Throttle Boost) with AGP Wastegate Actuator, terribly dangerous for winter driving. Not fast enough for my liking. My next car will be 425HP at least. Random Stuff: Over 4 months, fuel economy peaked @ 30.87 MPG, and lowest was 11.82 MPG. Average (Mostly City): 21.45 MPG. After a burnout there are chunks of rubber stuck down the entire side of the car- but they wash off easily. Oil changes always Castrol Syntec every 5000 kms. Weekly cleaning includes washing it, Armour-All the interior, vacum rugs, chrome polish exhaust tips, rim cleaning by hand, foaming tire dressing applied. Hand-waxed every 4 months. You get a lot of power for your dollar in this car. At stock (which mine is), it puts out 230 horseys. Acceleration is good, however the turbo-lag is quite noticeable. The suspension is tight on this car, which makes for good handling in corners, but a rough ride on bumpy roads. The build quality is a bit on the cheap side (it's still a Neon), but that's to be expected at that price point. The outside appearance it's quite nice, with the front fascia getting an upgrade from the standard Neon. However, the wing on the back is a bit much. Being a sedan, it fits 4 people comfortably, and there's plenty of room in the boot. Overall, it's a fun car to drive, and is probably one of the fastest in its price range.Dec 26, 2008

a 2.4L turbocharged four cylinder fourdoor neon that smokes the average V8 buttrocker mobile and most rice burners. buttrockers hate it because it doesn't have a big V8, (nevermind the faster 1/4 mile et's) and the ricers hate it because it is a very capable four, but not with rice roots. this car runs high 13's in the qm with over 20 MPG stock, and thats something neither buttrockers or ricers hardly ever accomplish. The DOGDGE SRT-4 is one of the best bang for buck cars out there, with an underrated 215hp in 2003 and 230hp in 2004-2005 2.4 L inline four cylinder engine (its actual more like 240-250hp) and at the price of only $20,000 brand new there were few in its time that could compete. with almost no turbo lagg and 250 lb-ft of touqe at only 2400rpm till about 5500rpm the traction of the front wheel drive setup seems to be the bigges problem with this car. Dodge reported the top speed as 153 but many have hit more than 155 stock and 160 with only a stage one mopar kit and and intake and with a 0-60 time in 5.3sec it was second only to the Viper in Dodges line up when this beast rolled onto the streets. Many have been known to underestimate this car saying "oh its only a NEON" but most end up changeing the oppinions shortly after. another popular misconception is that the hood scoop is not fuctional, but it is just not in the convetional way, instead if driving air it the intake it drive cold air to the turbo to help keep it cool at high boost levels. Seats modified from the Viper hold you firmly in place as you take aggressive turns. the suspension is a tad bit lose for my taste but it is still very capable of taking those hairpin turns at descent speeds. With the ability to run the 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec with a capable driver, love it or hate it this is not a car to be taken lightly.Apr 30, 2008

I think that the SRT-4 is quite possibly the best of the sport tuner cars out there. Sure, it's not AWD like the lancer and Impreza, but it is much cheaper than either of those two and gives you an experience that is more than worth the price tag. The viper style racing seats hug you and the interior is arranged perfectly to accommodate the driver. It can run with the best of them, pinning you to the seat with surprisingly little wheel spin. An altogether perfect package put together by the SRT boys and Dodge.Mar 15, 2008

-Pretty fast, dominate mustangs the only ones that have a chance are the Cobras that sad consdering the 40K price tag. - Great on gas, My car has some mods that pushes it to about 300hp at the wheels and I get about 25 mpg love it. - Lowering kit makes for an extremely bumpy ride but if you like hardcore sport performance it is the way to go. - The car shift smooth and I love how the clutch is heavy make a good feel wth the power. - If you like to drag this car is quick but one issue is the front wheel drive layout.. :( ...It tough to keep the tires hooked. The stock exhaust that comes on these sounds pretty good I love this car and im very pleased. One thing to look for is to be sure the upper charge tube is not wore or leaking that will reduce performance greatly , I recommend getting an aluminum upper charge tube.Feb 05, 2008

The car was great. I can not wait to get another one! The car looks too much like a regular neon until you whip by. The car out of the dealership is amazing. The exhaust is probably one of the meanest sounding factory exhaust out there. Also if you buy the Mopar performance parts it is covered under the warranty. this car will literally throw u into the seat when u punch on the gas. it handles pretty good, but i put an upgraded suspension into it, so it handles better.
