The 2004 Audi allroad quattro is the first full year that the new 4.2-liter, 300-hp V8 is available, having been introduced in midyear 2003. Paired with a 5-speed Tiptronic, it does not suffer from the noticeable turbo lag that exists in the 2.7T allroad. The 2.7 V6 gets 250-hp and is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission. Aside from losing the black fenders, there were no other changes in the allroad quattro for 2004.
Though billed as seating five, four fit comfortably in the leather seats. The split-fold 60/40 rear seats expand the 73-cubic feet of the rear cargo area. Audi's typical focus on interior luxury and elegance are not wasted on the quattro, with its adjustable seats, heated seat and steering wheel options, dual climate control, and Bose sound system. The allroad quattro struggled in the U.S., despite its crossover appeal, perhaps because it couldn't decide whether it was a car or an SUV. Unlike the A6 Avant, on which it is based, the 2004 allroad quattro offers variable suspension, which adjusts the ride height according to road conditions -- lower for highway travel and higher for more rugged offroading. The combination of quattro and the air suspension makes the allroad a powerful and versatile wagon, if somewhat stiffer in handling. The extra engine power in the V8 adds a nice sportiness to the drive.
The boxy style of wagons is missing from the curvy allroad quattro, and this style appeals to owners. They also like the confident handling and solid feel of the car, as well as the extra pep from the V8. Top marks go to the AWD system that works great in snowy climates. The cargo space and legroom make long family trips almost pleasant. Downsides are high repair costs, poor initial acceleration with the turbo, and lousy cupholders. Your second home will be at the gas pump, as the 2004 allroad gets terrible gas mileage.

Great Car if you have patience and an extra $4K-5K to sort it all out. The air suspension, cam seal leaks, secondary air pump, & control arm issues always need updating. That said, it is SOLID, drives GREAT, seems somewhat overbuilt & has a very robust chassis, classic style still looks fresh today. Wonderful road car and the 2.7 has plenty of get up and go. Cruises all day at 80 mph with ease.Worth putting money into if you find the right one. CHANGE TIMING BELT or your asking for trouble.Sep 03, 2020

Very quiet, comfortable, and spacious. It has been a great family car, especially when we packed it up with both kids, 2 dogs, and all of our luggage for a two week vacation. The only thing to accomplish that was adding a cargo topper which locks on in a few minutes.
The maintenance costs!!! WHEN the turbos dies, expect 15 hours of labor on top of the cost associated with two turbos. The clutch replacement was around 10-12 hours of labor along with the $1000 for parts. The air suspension is another costly area at a few hundred per airbag, plus 4 hours of labor. The engineers had a great time designing this car, but had little regard for maintenance after the fact. Things can add up very quickly.Dec 22, 2014

The Quattro Wagon is one of my favorite cars I have ever owned - comfortable, reliable, handles nicely in all weather conditions. My job requirements have changed and I am driving much more than before. Therefore the car is too big/heavy for just 1 person.Oct 05, 2013

I've averaged about 8000 miles per year for the last 5 years on my 2004 allroad, mainly highway, and I have not experienced a single problem with it. I have taken it in for regular servicing and I suppose that helps, but this car pretty much has hummed along since the day I drove it off the dealer lot. I remember aging 10 years that day--never in my life did I think I'd ever own a "station wagon", but since Audi didn't make an SUV back then, this was going to be it unless I went with the usual and boring MB, BMW or Lexus versions of the SUV. Five years on, everytime I approach the car, I still think that it's the best looking station wagon in the market, and while that may not be saying much, there is some consolation to be gathered there. When it's cleaned up inside and out, you really get a sense for how well fitted-out the car is. It has zip when you want it, and while that turbo lag is there, it's nowhere near as bad as some people make it out to be. More than a sedan, better than an SUV, not quite a Porsche--to this day I can't figure out why Audi stopped making this car. After 5 years, I'm tempted to look at a new car, but I just don't have any reason to give this one up. Jan 31, 2010

Although this is the most powerful, fully featured car I have ever
owned, its reliability is awful. I purchased a CPO 2004, 4.2 liter
model. It has been in for servicing a dozen times in 2 years.

Great car, Pick Up, SUV, Family Truckster. This car pretty much does it all. For a 2.7 liter V6, the car has get up and go. There is some Turbo lag, but it's manageable. This car has no blind spots, it's like driving in a greenhouse. Luxurious interior. Beware, this is a systems heavy car, and if it has been abused, you could have issues with the suspension and turbo's. Very easy to make lot's of HP with. Flash the ECM with the Euro program, and the car goes from 250 HP to 315 HP! It's great to see the look on the Mustang GT pilots faces, when they get smoked by a Station Wagon...Oops, I mean an Avant. This is not your father's Station Wagon. Mileage could be better, but it's a small engine in a good sized car.Mar 22, 2009

With the bi (twin) turbo V6 the take off this thing has is great. Then if you through in the fact that it's a station wagon it becomes almost mind blowing.
Lets face it it's a station wagon so it isn't cool but then again don't people buy SUV so they can seem cool when all they really need is a station wagon. As Jeremy Clarkson said "when you buy a station wagon you are saying to the world I have fulfilled my biological purpose and I'm now going to turn slowly beige" well with the styling and looks of this car maybe your not turning beige after all.Aug 21, 2008

Best snow handling car ever driven Sure footed, predictive traction and great handling in adverse conditions. Sorry mine also has a little extra HP with twin\bi-turbos...All four wheels can burn on take-off when traction control disabled -- vroommmvroomm !!!
