2003 Volvo XC70 Preview summaryImage

The V70 Cross Country got its remaking and renaming in 2003. It was unveiled as the XC70 in conjunction with the release of the XC90, Volvo's first textbook SUV (think height) which debuted this model year. Aside from the adjustment to the name, other changes were made to this rugged wagon for 2003. For instance, the move to the Swedish-made Haldex All-Wheel Drive, an electronic system, marks an improvement over the previous viscous coupling AWD. The Haldex is also used in the XC90. Like the Cross Country before it, this car was made with a 5-speed automatic transmission only. With a 2.5-liter, 208-horsepower engine and AWD, the vehicle averages 18 mpg city and 25 highway. Owners of this model sometimes say that their numbers are better than that. In addition to the many safety features (air bags, side-impact beams, ABS, traction control, and more), air conditioning, and power locks, windows, and seats came as standard equipment. Leather seats, CD player, and sunroof were made available as options, as was the Volvo Navigation System. User reviews reflected mostly great satisfaction with the car's appearance, comfortable seats, safety, and build quality. They praised it especially for its abilities in poor weather. There were also several complaints of recurring problems found within these anecdotal accounts. A few others complained of limited visibility due to the car's pillars and somewhat small back window, and others wished for more power.

Did you know that Volvo paints their car 5 times compared to other auto manufacturer which is only 2 times. Body is so durable. Engine will run almost forever. Transmission just needs close attention like replacing fluid every 30K or 60K miles. Its a little heavy but other than that I have no complains about this car. When I was growing up I enjoyed the third row seats and now I have kids they get to experience the joy of just sitting backwards. I have taken it on every terrain and I must say that it would not back down especially in the snow. The height is perfect for that off road trekking. Apr 10, 2013

This is a great family vehicle with a safe and smooth ride. It has great handling and always felt in control. Gas mileage is always between 24 to 25 miles per gallon. We highly recommend this vehicle for any family. Aug 01, 2012

I don't know why this site won't let me choose 2002 as a year for my car. My car is a 2002, not 2003. This is the best ride I've had for a car - my better half can't get over how secure it feels on the road. The tires are Goodyear Assurance and great on wet roads. I just had the timing belt done and the transmission software updated, the air conditioning works great, she doesn't leak, and the doors close the way they should. A Volvo mechanic said a good way to test quality is to put a car on a hoist with the door open, then close it. On lesser quality cars, you might have to close it twice to get it to latch. Not on my car! She's so stable in structure that there are no issues. She's chocolate brown, like a well-bred Thoroughbred and she's from Kentucky originally! Imagine that! LOL Aug 26, 2010
