Last year, the A4 introduced a wagon to go along with its sedans, the 2.8-liter, 190-hp V6 Avant. Feeling left out, in 1999 the 1.8 Turbo A4 gets its own Avant, maxing out at a not-too-shabby 150 hp. Both sedans and wagons also are available as a quattro AWD version as well, and all Audi A4s come standard with ABS brakes, traction control, power windows and locks, cruise control, and leather-trimmed steering wheel and shifter. Since you'll spend a lot of money on the solid-performing Audi in the first place, Audi figures it should treat its owners right on the inside.
Somewhere out there a coffee-scalded commuter is thanking Audi for redesigning its notoriously shoddy cupholders, known for spilling at the slightest step on the gas pedal. Yes, one of the big changes in the 1999 Audi A4 is new cupholders. Also new in the 1999 Audi A4 is a larger passenger side mirror. Whether choosing a wagon or sedan, what you know you'll get with Audi is not only a luxury interior, but expert handling and smooth ride. The quattro AWD, when paired with the firmer supension and tuning of the Sport Package, arms you for battle against the elements, giving drivers full confidence on the road.
The quattro and five-speed manual transmission are big hits with owners, as are the responsive handling and traction of the 1999 A4. Good trunk room, especially with the wagons, is also praised by moms and dads everywhere. Aside from the never-ending complaints about expensive repairs, owners also dislike the A4's reliability and frequent visits to the shop. Some have reported problems with the brakes. The seats, particularly in the back, are not comfortable for long trips. And, sorry Audi, but owners say the cupholders are still badly placed.

A good all rounder 4WD, Great family car, great cargo space, Okay Reliability, Bad maintainace costs for an old car price was okay, uses a lot of gas, looks decent unlike most Audis in the 90's back seats, front seats (obviously) Aug 11, 2013

What can i say? I love my Audi. The power and speed on such a small car as this one is amazing. Need a quick acceleration when turning or just to simply beat that guy next to you at a red light who thinks his car is so "cool"? Well that's no problem for this little A4. The braking is absolutely phenomenal as well, as it could stop on a dime, if needed. The handling is great! Turning, curves, hills, they all feel the same as there's no need to over-turn the steering wheel to do so. The gas mileage could be a tiny bit better, but it's not something that is over the top. Whoever owned the car before me must have neglected it like crazy as i have had to do a lot of repairs on it. It's not the car's fault, though. Even then, i did not go over $600 fixing EVERYTHING that was wrong with it. A quick tip, if you're going to take it to an Audi dealer to have it fixed, don't complain about maintenance prices. Do your research, ask around, get quotes, there are plenty of tiny independent Audi mechanics who charge you next to nothing to do the same, if not a better job than a dealer's mechanic. Ever since then, the car has behaved and been of perfect reliability to me. Another quick tip, don't buy this car if you're not too big on keeping up with regular maintenance stuff. If you neglect it, like any other car, it will start acting up on you. Seats are very comfortable and the heat seats feel so nice on my butt when it's freezing outside! Oh yeah, and the quality of everything inside, as well as out, is superb! Great job Audi, like always! The only con i have on this beauty, is that it isn't too big on family space in the back. Enough to fit kids comfortably, or friends if you're a young adult like me, but not comfortable enough to fit 5 adults.Jul 30, 2013

Both my sister and I have Audi A4's and absolutely love our vehicles. The color alone is eye catching not to mention the heated leather seats, six disc cd player and moonroof. It is a joy to drive and handles extremely well. If I had to list any cons about the car it is better on gas when driving on the highway compared to around town. Mar 12, 2013

Excellent designed car with full amenities and comfortable interior. Excellent handling in rain, snow and ice. Gas mileage is not as high as one would hope but for the daily highway/freeway it's average on mpg. Nice ride overall with ABs brakes and solid traction control. Worth the cost to enjoy a somewhat high priced vehicle.Jan 02, 2013

it will withstand anything you throw at it, and keep on rolling. the all wheel drive system is great for corners at high speeds, driving in the snow and rain. the leather interior is luxurious, and comfortable. I've driven it long distances and I've never been uncomfortable in the seats.Sep 27, 2012

We more than feel safe and confident in this car - it's a flat-out joyous machine to own. The driving dynamics haven't degraded in the slightest. Stays on center easily and precisely carves corners with highly responsive pep and agility. Everything still works great, but the cup holders are poorly placed and tiny. We were a little concerned about going to a small sedan from a station wagon, but there's plenty of room for us, our 3 kids and all the stuff that comes with kids. The trunk is huge and cabin space is intelligently designed. A genuine pleasure to own, and we know it will hold most of its value even after we're done with it!Jul 14, 2012

Great car for a single person or married couple. Not the greatest for back seat its
pretty small. The over all cost are kind of high. This car is a very fun car to drive. It
is practically a snowmobile in the winter. Nov 29, 2011

The car has everything a person could want in a car, and most of it comes
stock with the car. My audi looks pretty good, but the ride is very smooth, n
the car is pretty fast and handles pretty amazing with the awd system!!! As of
now I have many aftermarket parts in my audi such as a turbo back exhaust, a
full suspension system, 225amu full swap, upgraded gt-rs turbos, n a few other
items. An audi is an amazing car!¡!Oct 23, 2011

reason for dislikes are definetly price of repair parts. The overall performance of this car is almost an A+ all though i prefer my cars to be coupes. The car is extreme for long road trips if you have a rage and ego for speed and cornering. May 11, 2010

Stock its slow. The braking is pretty good. Its built
like a german car should be, solid and quiet. Are
there any cars around quite as sexy as a slammed b5?
Not many. Its never left me stranded broken down.

From the factory its peppy but with the GIAC 93 oct. tune, turbo back catless exhaust, forge splittR valve, and custom intake, it is a pretty fast car capable of spinning 1st and 2nd with crisp but not hard gear changes. It handles very well although there is roll to be expected since it is not quattro and the brakes are amazing. It gets over 400 miles to the tank even with all these modifications and that "WHSHH" of the blowoff/DV valve is so much fun to hear. It spolls the small turbo fast to 18psi and makes the car feel like a powerful v6 rather than a tiny 4. The interior is the best part and the car is built like a tank.Jan 25, 2010

the performance of my car is very good for me. And then, it' s very smart and material used of the car is high quality. Next, its acceleration time suprises me. But fuel consumption is trouble for me. Regardless, i give up never it..Jan 09, 2010

Has a few dings and dents, but nothing drastic. Driver's side seat cushion is sliced, but able to be covered by a seat cover for extra comfort. HP kicks in with no drag. No burn outs, and that's good for the tires. The car loves premium gas. I love it so far. Oct 23, 2009

Turbo rocks at altitude. Road performance is awesome, autoX is beastly, thought I've reduced my pushing. Mileage is quite acceptable for an quattro (all wheel drive), cornering in canyons is amazingly fun. Car is nimble in traffic and solid on snow and ice with winter tires.Jul 05, 2009

Love the drive & the performance - it loves hills (& that's a bonus living in New Plymouth!), but it's got no air con (which on a 3 hour trip to Hamilton & back on hot days was darned annoying) & the dash computer doesn't work, which is a pain when warning sounds happen & it's trying to light something up, but you can't see what it's trying to tell you!. I bought this car like few months ago. It was originally owned by German lady who really cared about the interior. Was the great deal I think because I haven't spent a penny for repairs. Of course except the usual things like motor oil, break liquid, servo liquid, etc. I really like the feeling of the car once you get in; it makes me feel safe and comfy. Event it has an engine like 1.6ccm I can enjoy the sport ride. I'm gonna definitely stay with Audi for the future. Especially interested in the new Audi S series. I’m looking forward to get one.)Oct 15, 2008

Its a very nice car that is very reliable but once something needs to be fix it, can get a litttle expensive. Its fast for a 4 cylinder that has great handling and sticks to the road. This car is very fun to drive and i do recommend this car.Sep 01, 2008

I got this car in 2007 great car. all wheel drive the only thing it was a little slow on the accelerator but once it got going she took off turns at 50, off ramps at 90 great drive. another down fall was the body was low. good thing it was such a little car and it only took up 3 quarters of a parking space ive seen many people hit the parking block with my car O__O. gas mileage is 16 maybe ? better off driving a hummer but its turbo and its quick. handles sweet.

Bought it to replace my 93 Talon TSi AWD. Love the Quattro system! Air, cruise, power windows/locks/sunroof, 6-way pwr adjustable & heated leather seats, 8 speaker Bose audio system w/ 6-disc changer, 5v 2.8L, projectors (now with 6000K hid's), 5spd Tiptronic trans (with steering mounted shifters), heated & tinted sideview mirrors, SUPER-low mileage. I've had it for less than a week. It is a stick shift which makes it even more fun to drive. The Quattro system is spot on. So far the only complaint is the Stereo, just so you know I've never had a stock stereo system in any car that I have ever driven on a regular basis. Other than that I love it!Apr 09, 2008

I loved this car. I had a few mods done to it, mostly suspension. It was fun to drive, but not fun to work on. After 60-70k miles you'll need to rebuild the front suspension. It rode great, even with coilovers (600/700lb spring rates). I almost wish I didn't sell it, but the miles were getting up there.Apr 04, 2008

Great car for a great price. With lots of options including sport suspension, winter package, Bose sound system and all-wheel-drive. Wonderful to drive in the snow, no worries unless you are lead footed. Gets good gas mileage, if like any car its taken care of. The interior is pleasing to the eye. It's not spectacular but its not bland and boring like a Ford. It's a luxury sedan after all. I would highly recommend to anyone who doesn't mind paying for premium gas and who has a decent income, due to costly repairs. Not very ideal for a high school or college student with bills to pay.Mar 14, 2008
