Once again, the 1998 Ford F-150 topped the U.S. truck market in sales. The perennial favorite continued to depend on its ruggedness, reliability, and variety of choices for buyers. Trims available were the XL, XLT, and XLT Lariat; short-bed and long-bed versions, as well as stepside and styleside choices, were offered for each incarnation of the '98 Ford F-150.
Inside the 1998 Ford F-150, the watchword was "comfort." Cab choices included 2-door and 3-door standard and extended cabs, and CD systems were a popular option. Under the hood, the accent was on power; the 98 Ford F-150 offered buyers a choice among a 4.6 liter Essex V-6, a 4.6 liter Triton V8, and a 5.4 liter Triton V-8 topping out at 235 horsepower. Optional four-wheel drive with automatic locking hubs made this tough pickup a favorite with off-road adventurers.

Great truck. Fun to drive. I had the V6 w/ 5-speed manual. My only complaint was the poor gas mileage of the V6, about 18 mpg. Oct 21, 2021

There's not that much room in the back for kids to ride in on long trips camping. While pulling a camper I've had to add air bag suspension on it to level the truck out. But it's paid for and easy to work on.Dec 12, 2014

Well this is the simplest vehicle i own. no blind spots comfortable for two and so versatile that it can be used for anything at all ( except Dinner with the wife ). Needs to be upgraded though to a more creature comfort version like the SVT.Jul 02, 2014

Outstanding truck. Lasts forever tons of fun to drive. A little slow at the top end
but a tune up is all that's necessary. Fair price for plates. Awesome 4x4 for tons
of fun when the road is too boringApr 22, 2012

my truck is 13 years old and the only problem i have had out of it is a slight coolant
leak fixed it 45 minutes. It drives great and sounds great with the straights on it.
Performance is pretty good for a small V8 it has great torque and handles pretty
good too.Apr 04, 2012

Great truck I love to drive it. The truck was very well put together, have
had no problems. The only thing I have had to do with the truck is change
the oil. I am the second owner and I love it.Mar 23, 2012

My truck has over 250,000 miles on it. It still runs and looks great, I would say that repair bills have been less than expected for a vehicle its age. The power and gas mileage have gone down slightly over the years, but that is expected. Mar 19, 2012

I have had my 98 ford F150 for about 6 months and love it. Ford makes one of the toughest trucks on the road today. i hate fueling it up $75 to $80 to fill it up but its fairly easy on gas. my truck has 300,000 miles on it and still running like a new truck.Sep 07, 2010

Its got a 351 Windsor in it now so its pretty much fast as balls. Nothing has fallen apart yet so build quality is pretty good. The truck is way fun to drive on road and offroad even without 4wd.Apr 09, 2010

I love my '98 150, it has a 2007 4.9L V8 and a flow master exhaust. She has some speed and has never let me down. Fun fun truck to drive! Gets pretty good MPG for a good sized truck.Oct 28, 2009

It's pretty sporty for a 4x4 pickup. It has a lot of spunk and quick reaction time. I wouldn't recommend it in quick turning situations at high speed though, it's heavy in the front and light in the back so it's handling is not so good. However, it is EXCELLENT in the snow and in 4-wheeling expeditions! It's got good clearance and it runs great all the time as long as it has working spark plugs and wires :P It doesn't leak oil on the driveway even after 170,000+ miles! It starts up smoothly as well. I've never had to worry about it much as long as I keep in maintained well enough.Sep 30, 2009

fast for its kind, well built....it is a ford of course. It accelerates pretty quick, and it gets damn good gas mileage. It also sounds really good for a six cylinder, sounds like a small block v8, no engine problems yet.Sep 27, 2009

this truck was given to me by my dad as an everyday truck for high school. It gets alright highway mileage but it doesn't have enough power to get up larger hills. the torque is good and it is a fairly light truck to bomb around in.Sep 09, 2009

All around great truck, however it was in a sort of leap year for lug patterns, and it is hard to find any rims with the 5 on 135 pattern. However the 5.4 well makes up for this in power and torque. The overhead cam and bullet proof block make it a power house for this little body. However the Mass air flow sensor is crap. Pure crap. Mar 16, 2009

My husband's truck - it's a great for what we need it for. Has a few things I would trade for other makes/models but overall it's a truck that has a good sized cabin and bed! Oh, and the V8 doesn't hurt to have either, although we miss having a 4x4.Jan 21, 2009

Performance is ok, has a 4.6 Triton with a 5 Speed over- drive transmission. built really well, dosnt need any body work. it has a gray interior and white exterior, plus it has 20" chrome wheels. gas mileage is surprisingly well for a V8 truck. It is awesome to drive for me because i just got my license 6 months ago and i love manuel transmissions.Jan 14, 2009

2 goes alot of places in just 2wd
3 semi-comfortable front seats
Dislikes: 1 Back seats aren't comfortable for people over 5 foot 6 inches
2 suspension needs to be stiffer in the rear
Cost of ownership Have had the truck since September and have only put gas and took it in for L.O.F.Dec 23, 2008

Its got great handling and braking. The acceleration is great for a 4.6l v8. i wish it was a 5.4 but what can you do.
I did have to do a few repairs on it over the past few years. The sway bar endlinks did rust through and have to be replaced for like $20. The rear diff got water in it and need to have the fluid changed (dont forget friction modifier!), which was due to pilot error ( don't submerge the back half of your truck in water to pull out a boat...) and brake torque burnouts do put enough to stress on your car to eventually break your u-joints. I have had a problem with a squeak in the suspension in the front passanger side.
Inside of the car looks great with the 50th aniversary leather seats. Outside is a bit scratched up from hunting, but looks good after a wax, especially the 4x4 emblems on the sides.
Although it costs a pretty penny to drive, with 10 - 12 mpg but if you need a truck, its a good one.
Its tons of fun to drive, on and off-road. handles great in the mud if you got 4x4.Sep 16, 2008

I loved this truck. Plenty of power from the big V8. Four wheel drive worked very well and it was comfortable to drive. I added a LineX spray in bed liner and later added a matching canopy. The only problems I had were with the spark plugs and Ford's individual ignition coils. Get them wet, and they are fried!Sep 03, 2008

The appearance is amazing. I have added several after market parts to make it a bit more fun. The truck has a freak'n lot of power but is slowed down by its 5000 pounds of weight. It has a new audio system with a base link. Infinity base link and speakers. It has an Alpine deck. Billet grills and ac knobs. I put 33 inch pro comps on it. The engine has a gibson exhaust, air aid throttle body spacer, k&n intake, and superchips programmer. It can beat a stock Acura RSX off the line even with the 33's.Jul 29, 2008

I have put 2 power enhancements on. Flowmaster exhaust and K&N cold air intake on. Headers will be next. no repairs needed to date not even a check engine light. Interior is a little plain but its a truck. It handles pretty well for a truck. Mileage is bout 16-18. maintenance is easy. Its fun to drive and has plenty of power. Jul 13, 2008

I love that I can beat the hell out of it and it still runs pretty good. Its low maintanence and I love that. It hauls what I want it to haul. I barely have to drive because I can't fit more that 2 people (including driver) comfortably. It rocks and it's the best truck ever. Jun 23, 2008

Had this truck the same time as the Thunderbird and this is what I took from the divorce. It was great in the snow, but only had a V6 engine, so not much power however plenty to get the job done. It drank gas which is why I replaced it.Mar 24, 2008

I enjoyed driving the Ford F-150. It was roomy and spacious with plenty of storage compartments. I like not having a center console and being able to move freely in the cabin. I also like being able to seat 3 people comfortably. This is a nice truck with the exception of the paint. The paint on the F-150 is very dull.Jul 31, 2007

I've owned my truck for 3 years and have had nothing but good times and plenty of compliments with no major repair problems.Jan 13, 2007
Just purchased 1998 ford f150 Supercab 4wd last week. I have locked and unlocked the doors multiple times then all of the sudden today doors won't unlock on either side. Walked back to the drivers side to try again and noticed the passenger side unlocked and still the keys wouldn't work. Drivers side window also doesn't work. Sounds like it may be an electrical issue? Going to take the door panel off and check wiring. This all may explain why the truck came with 5 Keys.
I have a 98 F150 2 Wheel Dr. and I have a set of wheels off of a later model expedition. My truck has the 12 mm studs and I was wondering if that would be an issue with the expedition having 14 mm studs, making the hole sloppy for the studs.
I am restoring a 1998 F150 that has had a hatched job done on the wiring. I am looking for a wiring schematic from the multifunction switch to the high voltage fuse panel.
the alternator reads 14.3 battery reads 14 i dont see any discharge on my dash indicator its been doing this for 2 weeks it even stopped flickering for 10 min.then it started again i cant find it and i cant afford a shop guess im screwed
