car. There have been a few issues, but nothing out of the ordinary. And

this is the 6th t5 ive had this one being the best paid £500 for it,when i bought it it seemed a bit slugish have had the cambelt done and it goes like a rocket.glad i bought the manual one as its does around 10mpg more than the auto its great fun to drive although the handling is not as good as my other one.has no rattles but the dashboard has a squeak as at some stage the heater matix had gone and the dash has strange lump in it,it has had no mods at all Sep 28, 2010

This wagon, with AWD, light-pressure turbo, and 5-speed manual gearbox, was available in Canada but not in the USA, where only an automatic was offered. AWD makes it a great car for my needs here in Whistler, British Columbia. Fast, economical, subtle yet elegant styling. I use it as a demonstration vehicle sometimes for my advanced driving schools.(www.spdt.ca)
Front brakes have been upgraded to cadmium plated, drilled, slotted, work better on mountain roads. Some poly bushings, less restrictive air cleaner, otherwise stock. Hard to believe how nice it still is to drive, 5 speed manual really helps. Torque from low pressure turbo comes on early, makes vehicle feel quick enough, though no rocket ship. Nice power band for overtaking.
As an automotive journalist I drive many different vehicles, this one is still nice to take home.
Still looks great, feels and sounds solid. I pay strict attention to maintenance procedures. As with most European cars, this makes a huge difference.Jun 21, 2010

It's a quality car, it's kinda like a tank but it turns well. It's got something like 220 hp but there's a hesitation when you step on the throttle we can't figure out. It's not to good on gas but it's not horrible, something like 18mpg. There's a few scratches here and there but it's an overall good car.May 06, 2010

My 1997 Volvo 850 is a awsome car. It has a V5 Motor and 4 speed automatic Transmission. It gets excellent gas milage and has alot of style to it. For the money, Volvo is one of the best makes you can get and the 850 has been an excellent model to have owned. Apr 24, 2010

Bought it for $400, and put some normal parts (brakes & steering) and Megan & I Cleaned it top to bottom. Now it drives like a brand new car!! ... Only the best cars last this long.

Just over 130,000 miles on our 97 850t5. The car still runs and drives fantastic. We plan to still be driving it when it reaches 250,000. Keep maitaining them and they will just keep on going. Volvo 4 life...Other than the fact that it's a little dated being so square it still looks sporty. I see one year old cars that are worse than my 97. It's safe fast reliable and still a whole lot of

Volvo has a vault-like build quality, using good body stiffness and quality materials to provide a stable, sure-footed feel. The T5 motor was definitely the heart of the car. Endless torque once on the boost. Competent handling, especially considering the heft and size of the wagon. Cavernous and properly shaped load area can swallow anything. nothing says SAFETY better than the VOLVO, full airbags, sips, leather, auto air, power steer, power windows, power everything, except i have to turn the steering wheel, apart from that you cant go wrong, next year i get my bowlers hat on the back dash (yeah baby)Sep 23, 2009

Appearance: I LOVE it...
Cost of Ownership: Low maintenance, but a bit worse mileage (turbo)

Handles very good, not very sporty but can be driven quite
fastly on most surfaces (tarmac, gravel, snow). Not the
cheapest car to maintain, some parts can be quite costly. A
nice car to drive, even though it aint very great fun, but fills
the needs for most people who want to drive comfortably,

The engin is just about perfectly power for the type of car and the car feels reliable on slippery roads.
Overall it feels very well put together and just the usual parts has been due to reparations.
The exterior might be called a bit booring, but I think it has a certain classic look over it. I like it, but it would also be nice with some moderate styling.Jun 14, 2009

A well built car that is safe and still fairly sporty. It has some understeer problems but it's still more powerful than most think. I have serviced it myself and it is cheap to maintain. The interior is also comfortable and functional.Mar 26, 2009

This car was quiet, smooth, and had had a certain dignity. It was a great college car because it never broke and it was incredibly comfortable with all the luxery upgrades like leather, sunroof and heated power seats. This Volvo had a huge gas tank and even though I commuted 80 miles every weekend, I rarely had to fill it. I never had to maintain it more than fluids and tire rotations. It had tight brakes like any volvo, and slower acceleration due to its heavy body. Still, once the acceleration would kick in it was fast and easy to manuver. A downside was the boxy body, but that never bothered me because it was solid as a tank and great in the snow as it was so heavy. I got hit by a drunk driver in an suv that was speeding and ran a stop sign. My volvo was totalled, along with his truck which jumped a divider, but no one in my car was hurt. Both men in the truck had head injuries. This car was fantastic in the accident. I am alive today because of it's superior performance. I had a blast driving it and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy one. Dec 14, 2008

i love the fact that it has a sport mode and an economical mode. the thing isnt as pretty as it could be i should put on some black aluminum rims but i dont have the money. its fast and very quiet. has good gas milage but it doesnt accelerate as fast as i would like. Oct 10, 2008

Have a manual 850 base. Good sound, needs mods, but overall jumps the line well and takes esses alright. Has more speed out of the higher revs. 5cyl gives between 22 city and 27 highway. This with bad tires and a slipping clutch. Overall, a fun, yet safe car. I don't have the turbo, but do have a manual which is apparently rare to find. All cars should be manual.Oct 08, 2008

It is rare. Only few thousand were ever made and in this color (anthracite grey), which was available only at the end of production even rarer.
It was the most powerful Volvo built till date, it has 250 BHP and 350 Nm torque and is quite quick.
It looks good. Sitting on dark 17" stock alloys is looking really sexy.
It is a real sleeper. Most of the other drivers really do not expect it to be so powerful and quick (for an old boxy thing).

Owned and drove the Volvo 850 for many years. It
was the first car I've ever drive.
Performance: the 222 HP turbo charged engine give
the driver one hell of a ride. It's an engine that's
demanding a great driver to tame. Yet, it can be
precise enough for anyone to control. The handing
was superb was a car this size and weight and at its
time. The state of the art, "Delta-link semi-
independent rear suspension," prevent the car from
under-steering for a front wheel drive car of
course. Although I drove the automatic 4 speed
transmission, it was very sporty. It's no wonder in
the 90s the 850 was used in many motor sports
and even in rally sport.
Interior: It has one of the most luxurious interior
for a car at its time. Leather seat, leather steering
wheel.
Exterior: from the outer appearance, it's not a
beautiful car. It's big and it looks like a match box
but who cares?
Reliability: For Volvo, every of its first generation
model's reliability are in serious question for
reliability. However, the T5 on the other hand is
one of the last in the 850 series. It is extremely
reliable. Major repairs are only determined by
driving habits.
Gas milage: For a car with this kind of weight,
power, engine, and age, it was considered good for
its time. Averaging 12.5-13 Liters to 100 KM, a full
tank can give you an average of 470 KM +-.

i have a 1994 volvo 850 glt. it is an automatic with power everythin including a sunroof. i have the headlight wipers and a button to choose my fuel economy intake. i have put in a supercharger kit with a cold air intake by AEM. i absolutly love driving/racing/goofin/partyin with my car. the stock radio is still good but im looking to replace it soon bc i want a lil more quality/custom. my car has a lil over 120k on it and deffinately still going. they are rated as 300-400k life expectancy.my volvo is solid with excellent safty standards. it performs good but i can get more and the look is stock but still good for a '94. no rattles but prices can b salty if u don't know an inside guy like i do. the volvo 850 sits low to the ground and handles the best i hav ever felt. it gets 33 mpg highway and about 26 in the city. THATS GREAT FOR THE POCKET! i hav redone the interior a little, like the center console and other random plastics wer painted by me to match the extior color of the car. the exterior paint is put on heavily for rust reduction and has a brilliant shine to it after its buffedAug 12, 2008

performance is great although acceleration from stop is a little slow. braking is excellent and it handles better than i expected i love the way these cars look unfortunately mine is a little ugly at the moment gets great fuel mileage i can usually drive around for about a week with the gas light on. I've had this car for over two years. Bought it in 2006 and have with 115K miles and now have over 150K miles on it for $7K. Old car nit-picking problems- left window drive failed -$350, odometer broke- est. $250, horn broke- $250. Right now it is burning oil but not noticeably on the road. It's seen at start up and it has to be changed every 3K. I bought it from 1 owner who had all records. So I'd recommend the model.Jan 05, 2008

Drive nice, good acceleration, no turbo lag, good handling, runs great.
Own it new, has 130k miles on it, no accident. But ...
Tires wears out very fast because of alignment design. Black dust from disc brakes make tires, wheels, and hub caps black and dirty, always.
My experience (for safety) is not to turn the disc but change all 4 discs and brake pads, cost: over $600.
The expensive low profile tire is race car rated so it wears out fast (1 year or 8k-12K miles). Illegal to change to lower speed tires, per tire companies. 3 of 4 tires leak air slowly, not fixable (same case on many new 4-tire sets.
Oil change must be done by Volvo dealer or Volvo tech to reset service light, else it stays on and may void all warranties.
Early failures (about 40k): remote door locks, trunk lock, fuel door lock, anti-lock brake system, motorized antenna.
$750-1000 to change timing belt + related parts, at every 60K miles. Advise to also change fan belts, water pumps, and thermostat at this time because stuffs are removed to access the belt (hence may cost $1000 or over).
Aluminum engine and oil pan: Be careful not to strip spark plug threads. Don't run over something to slice the fragile Aluminum oil pan, a $1000 part itself.
Cost of ownership is high.
For the same price, I'd get more of a car, more luxury, and much lower maintenance cost.Nov 29, 2007

I have a 97 volvo 850 and it goes dead while your driving down the road. For a while it wouldn't even crank. We have changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, relays, and ignition coil. We don't have the money to put it on a computer plus I don't know if we could get it to a place that does that because no one in our town has the equipment for volvos. So if someone could give me a suggestion of what this might be I would truely appreciate it.
