I like the low cost of repairs for this model. Even though the engine is infamous for little problems here and there, it's an overall good car. This . Is the second on of the same year I've owned and I admit I've grown to really like this type.Jun 19, 2014

Requires a lot of keep up. I've found other reviews that share these common problems: 1) factory head gaskets give out at low mileage - this is even a service bulletin, but not a recall; 2) combination blinker/high beam switch has to be replaced when it cancells out your brake lights - not a recall either; 3) rack and pinion is a recall - got fixed once, then later had to replace on my cost. Requires on a regular basis new brakes, shocks and O2 sensor. Otherwise, never left me stranded anywhere. Strong body, spacious trunk, models with bench seat can seat up to 6 passengers.Jan 28, 2012

This car accelerates at an average rate but if you put it to the floor she'll still get up. The stock brakes arent the best but could always be swapped with a monte carlo to have 4 way disk and upgraded to ventilated disk. It gets very good gas mileage and most maintenance can be done at home. Its a very sharp looking car and very fun to drive.Nov 16, 2011

I have a '97 chevy lumina. got her at around 123,000 miles, for my first car. I absolutely love it! runs aresome. is fun to drive. and have beat my buddies '97 nissan maxima several times, street racing(: low maintenance. high gas mileage. plus, i'm putting in two 400 watt subs, and getting a 1,000 watt amp, just put on a spoiler, a new center console, have recaro bucket seats, and am getting chrome rims and a moonroof. Its a car of good performance and lives up to the award winning Status that Luminas came to earn. This car itself was locked inside the GM Oshawa Car Plant during the strike of 1996. Dad bought it for mom and she gifted it to me.Jul 27, 2010

the car is roomy and comfortable it has good
acceleration and awesome gas mileage. my car has
like 172,000 miles and still a going. the only
maintenance i had to do is fuel and tires. it is a fun car

The best part about this car was, though it was a
Chevrolet, it really never gave me any problems. The LS
had an awesome acceleration, like all Chevy's, that gave
me a sexy launch off the line at a green light.. Only took
about 30 bucks to fill her up and on a normal work/school
week, I was more than content with the gas mileage.. I'd
definitely buy another, if not the same one again.. It's a
really easy car to keep clean because it doesn't have any
random crevices or hard to reach spots.. Not to mention a

Average mid-size sedan. Very comfortable ride and strong engine. I've had very few problems since I bought it aside from normal wear and tear. I love my car for the comfort, handling, and drive.
The only drawback is the appearance and styling. It's not a sports car at all and sometimes takes a little coaxing on the highway onramps. Over all though, it works perfectly for my lifestyle (work, kids, condo, etc.).May 02, 2009

Built like a Chevy. I've replaced spark plugs and wires and have done some brake work, but that's all I've had to do to this car. It is getting ready to break 178,000 miles and is still running strong.
The only bad thing about this car is that the power window on the drivers' side stops working for a few seconds every now and then, but after a minute, it works again.....weird.

This car has decent power from a 3.1L v6 engine which produces about 160 hp.
0-60mph in about 9 seconds. It has the best lumbar support it is very
supportive and comfortable. Perfect seating because you can seat 6. this car
handles pretty well for quick cornering. Large Trunk so you can take lots of
luggage for vacations. We have had it for 11 years and expect to keep it
longer. No problems and only has 85,000km (2008)
*Update*
Have since replaced the 4L-60E transmission with a new unit at 118000kms
Currently has 122950kms May 2013
Still love the car.
Planning on fixing the common rust areas and a/c.
Will keep this car on the road as long as possible!

Bought this car used and it performs ok. If I had some work done it probably would seem like a better car. I do push it to the limits and push the gas a bit too hard but overall its good for taking people from place to place and getting decent gas mileage.Mar 16, 2008

'97 Lumina 3.1 V6 "interrupted acceleration"
My daughter's '97 Lumina has 93K and has been well cared for. Recently she informed me it had a loss of power, so I performed some maintenance: cleaned the MAF, seafoamed the intake, replaced the fuel filter, plugs and wires, disconnected and reconnected with dialectic grease every harness I could find. I then test drove it and here's what she does every time: 1) Starting it, it had an ever so slightly rough idle but moved easily as expected at low speeds. 2) Upon pulling out of the neighborhood and onto a State road that headed on a slight uphill, I pressed the accelerator about 1/2 way as typical to gain the required speed. Initially it accelerated as expected, but after about 30 yards it started to run at a lower speed and engine rev AS IF I reduced the pedal to about 1/4. 3) When the car reached the crest of the hill, even though I didn't alter the pedal position, it began accelerating to a more expected 1/2 pedal acceleration. 4) The above was typical on all uphill slopes. As I have been chasing this issue, I have has random misfire codes come up that move between cylinders 2,4,5, and 6 to just cylinder 1, to random misfire and now the "service engine" light doesn't even illuminate. I did purchase a Foxwell Code Reader and have been trying to learn what it is telling me. As an aside, my daughter stated that it has been losing a little water over time, and she replaces it as needed, so I did a compression test and researched this 3.1 and determined the head gasket was leaking into at least cylinder #1, so I replaced the head gaskets and had the valves done. Sadly, no change at all. I tested the fuel pressure at the rail and have 39/40 psi with ignition on and 47 psi with the engine running. Though no code, I had a friend cut lose the CAT and you can see a light right thru it, so its not that pipe lining I heard about... welded it back on. Also in my attempt to locate the issue through asking others to check it out (two mechanic shops and two trans shops that came highly rated), I have replaced the cam position sensor, the MAF, the TPS. Both transmission shops stated it wasn't the trans, but an engine misfire (for what that's worth). As I stated, I have recorded running info from the Foxwell NT301, but I'm still figuring what the numbers should be, and then what that might mean (learning curve with little info). Any assistance is greatly appreciated in advance.

Car won't start
My 97 lumina 3.1 v6 is having issues firing. I'm getting 7 volts at the fuse block for the fuel pump relay when the key is turned on. Im only getting .23 volts at my oil pressure switch connector. I know the FP is good because I directed hot power to the relay and it turned on. All my wires look good to the oil sensor. When I hot wired my FP and tried starting the car it still won't start. What should I do next?
