I love driving my 540i. I also am fearful as I drive her - I'm worried something is going to break and we'll be stuck with another bill. Lets see, so far we've had to put in a new radiator, radiator shroud, fan clutch, fan, coolant sensor, master cylinder seals, power steering fluid reservoir, valve body (transmission), brakes, rotors, battery (big expensive one), tires, etc.Dec 06, 2011

Fantastic ride, but for enthusiasts. This is not a car for people who are looking for practical cars, it's high maintenance if you wanna keep it running and it gets low gas mileage. But the way it handles and the power it delivers, it's fantastic for the price it costs! It's truly an ultimate driving machine.

Awesome power and comfort sheer bmw driving pleasure, despite the age and mileage on the girl she drives well and the interior design is perfect for it's age. Typical luxury german sedan. Smallest production V-8 at the time. 5spd manual was longer throw but the best highway cruiser so far. A typical BMW tank. This model was pre-traction control so winters were fun..never got stuck with 4 of the finest speed rated Finnish snows provided by Leipold Tire of Cuyahoga Falls. Acceleration good at highway speeds, mileage quite acceptable in mid - high 20's, inexpensive to drive. Nice color combo dark green over tan leather. Perfect build, looks new, taken care of, excellent breaking acceleration and handling. when u catch the highway, drive like insane and dont wanna get back to the sub urbs XD

Nice car with with sheer driving pleasure, because it is 4wd model...
I use it mostly at winter, cause it is so nice to drive in slippery and icy roads here in Finland.

The E34 is possibly the best BMW ever made with a Lovely little 3lt V8.the engine is cheap to run on fuel.

High consumption, but if we compare 2.0, 2.5. 3.0 we will see that there aren't a big differences in fuel consumption. Very popular model.
During the using some strange technical problems appeared. No body could solve it. So this car had to be sold.

Ive owned this car for about 4 months and love it!!! it has plenty of power to easily merge into traffic, comfortable, is heavy enough to get traction in snow and gets decent mpg's. i have 210,000 on her and she still runs like a champ!!! maintenance does tend to be a little more but is well worth it. one problem im having is anything that is plastic is breaking but if you want a car that is fun to drive, reliable, quick, and will have you looking good, this is it.Dec 20, 2009

Our BMW 540i has been a great car, but it has it's issues. Here's the pros: Interior is very nice with soft leather seats, beautiful wood and good quality plastics. The outside is soooo muscular - it looks fast standing still. We have AC Schnitzer chrome rims which brings out the beauty in our car. The suspension is top notch and our car handles flat on corners. Road feel is great and the brakes are awesome.
The bad: Reliability has been a let down. The transmission went out a little over 100K miles. Cooling system also a little before 100K. Lots of leaks - power steering fluid, coolant, brake fluid, oil, transmission oil. We finally got all the leaks taken care of and the warning system is blank! Woo hoo!Jun 13, 2009

I bought this car because i wanted a car that would be a good motorway cruiser ! I am not disappointed , it is a comfortable cruiser that does 30mpg . As well as the effortless motorway miles it also has the performance and handling to embarass plenty of smaller cars that you might expect to be more nimble . After 180,000 miles it still drives beautifully and goes from service to service without using a drop of oil . Dec 12, 2008

Being that the car is 5000 pounds, it's not big on acceleartion, but it's enough to roast the local ricers. What the 5 series is good for, is a cozy quiet ride thats somehow...fun. I don't mind driving it the 2 and a half hours to visit campuses cause...i know i get to drive it all the way back again.Aug 29, 2008

This was a solid car and my first exposure to German engineering. It's hard for me to buy anything else nowadays... the cost may outweigh the pain inthe wallet! Besides, there really is joy in driving for me and I was surprised that a used car like this could provide it.Aug 18, 2008

The Phoenix! soon to rise from the rise from the ashes, built like a tank, no rot what so ever, best straight 6 ever produced in the whole world absolutely bulletproof. An amazing car, 192bhp standard, upgraded to 213bhp, full nappa leather, full electric pack (inc. rear seats and headrests), full courtesy lighting pack, 10-speaker BOSE sound system, unblemished metallic silver bodywork, original metric x-spoke alloys, auto boot, awesome performance from the straight-six engine (good as standard, great with re-map; 0-62 in 7.5 secs), driving on the motorway is effortless with the huge comfy leather seats and armrests, full memory pack (all mirrors, all seats etc), all seat climate control. Can look gorgeous in black with factory bodykit and massive BBS alloys. Needs to be lowered (more front than back) otherwise looks odd. Confortable and well equiped. But perfomance poor, no torque. No M5 automatic or Jag XJRJan 29, 2008

Beautiful feat of German engineering with the classic pre-Bangle curves and muscle.
The four litre V8 roars to life when you put your foot down, but is fairly easy on the petrol when cruising. Passing on two lane NZ roads is a breeze. Solid handling in and out of corners.
Full leather interior with wood trim. Electronic adjustable driver and passenger seats, sunroof, power windows, air conditioning, factory BMW alarm with double locking doors and shatter sensors in the windows, aftermarket Pioneer CD/iPod stereo.
16" E39 wheels wrapped in Michelin 225s.

I love the style of this car. It's sporty, has great grunt, yet let me fit two kids with car seats in the back.

I like most everything about it, except repair costs. It even costs twice as much to get smogged as most other cars. The computer system is a real bonus. I didn't realize it would show up on the dashboard until I pressed the turn signal (by mistake). I would buy this car again!Oct 10, 2007

Transmission Program Error
There was a "Transmission Program Error" on the dash indicator. The error went away, and returned. Accompanying the error, the car would not travel forward. The error went away, the car drove. I consulted BMW about this; they said it was okay to drive if the car was capable of operating, particularly to get the car to a service center. I conveyed if there was a transmission problem and it had to be replaced, I want to consider a used transmission. If this was not available, a rebuild transmission is desirable. They had no transmission personnel (they said). Below is the order of troubleshooting and replacement: Replacement Order A: (Actual) 1. EPROM 2. AT-Getriebe (transmission) 3. AT-Co unit Note: A cable was also tested in the above procedure, but I was charged for the items cited above. The car did not resume normal transmission operation until the transmission control unit was replaced (item 3 above). I preferred the order below, due to the indicated error and the cost of each part to the customer. Replacement Order B: (Desired) 1. EPROM 2. AT-Co unit 3. AT-Getriebe (transmission) I've been taught to replace from the lowest/smallest replaceable unit to the highest/larger. Questions: Does my rationale make sense or am I missing something? What is the life expectancy of a transmission under normal condition, and low mileage for the car age? Below is some other information if you have further questions: I am not a car expert; I just know how my car responds under operating conditions (like my right arm). The car was garage kept and stored since 1997, with limited driving and regular services. Prior to submitting the car to the service center for the first service in Korea; the car performed well. It had approximately 66,000 at the time. Now the mileage is 86,000, 10 years later with regular services. They car has was never the same after the first service. Just like I know my right arm.
