5 speed transmission stuck!
I have a 1987 5 speed transmission Toyota 4Runner that won;t go into or out of gear. the gear shift is froze!! any suggestions?

After the 1986 redesign, the 1987 Toyota 4Runner remained primarily unchanged. The suspension remained an Independent Front Suspension with its accompanying increase in highway driving quality and decrease in off-roading power.
The powerful 22R-TE I4, a turbo-charged version of the prior 2.4-liter I4 remained an option, but was only available with an automatic transmission.

This toyota has been part of our family, for how many years already. I can't forget that event when our 4runner fell off a man hole, but when we retrieved it, the 4runner was like "you can't stop me!" ByeMay 23, 2013

For my use , which is mostly as an off roader and commuter , it's power is enopugh . i don't tow anything bigger than a utility trailer . Off road , it's hard to beat ....the locking hubs and low gearing make it possible to go just about anywhere ! I have pulled-out at lest 2 dozen bigger, stronger, faster,fancier supposed 4x4"s . despite my constant off-roading , the on-road handling is great.Build quality speaks for itself....besides rust on a 25 yr old vehicle , i have only replaced maintenance items . The appearance is .... i would say popular ,i get comments on my beat-up old 4runner all the time , I would assume though because of it's 4x4 prowess and durability. fuel economy ...i average 7dollars per hour off road .This is a fun vehicle to own , the top comes off , it seats 5 , and can go allmost anywhere .Mar 28, 2012

This is the only new car I've ever bought because it has been a great drive. When new the only problem was faulty thermostats - once I swithed from Toyota replacements no problems. Head gaskets went on mine about every 115000 miles. You should replace timing chains each time. Replace oil pump around 250000. That's where I'm at now. I fixed the little rust spots before they got out of hand. New paint when it was 17 years old and the unit looks great. Was asked just last year where I got my "new" SUV. It's been a great ride! Good gas mileage. I did have to rebuild the automatic 4 wheel drive self-locking hubs after my daughter used the "truck" for 3 years.Jan 06, 2010

this is the best truck i have ever had.its great off road. it gets decent mileage.gets lots of looks.easy to work on.i am big into 4x4's and i had a built 04'jeep tj that was awesome,this toyota is stock and has done the same things as the jeep and some the jeep could not.i am having an electrical issuue right now(i put it under 4' of water) but i still done want to sell it.i love it.Sep 22, 2009

when i got mine I had to replace the timing chain, but after I got that done and got the timing right it runs like a champ. Easy to work on and a blast to drive and parts arent that expensive eitherAug 25, 2009

slow most all repairs are tough b/c its so tight in engine compartment. gas is ok for a truck with 31s but not good for a 4 cyl. really boxy but plenty roomy on the inside. fold down seats are niceAug 11, 2009

Alright, the 4Runner is a different story. I really didnt mean to buy it, I just did.
I needed a car to get back on my feet when I moved to Alabama. Bought it in 2007, so that would have made it 20 years old at the time.
MAN, It look sawsome: has oversized tires on it, 3 inch lift kit, and everything on it. However, I am having some MAJOR engin problems with it; crapping out. On top of that, my sunroof blew off: just poof. On the freeway, during a rainy day: of all days.May 26, 2009

24 years old and is still running. All original inside and out.Engine still original and is
still running strong with 275,000 miles. It is a work horse and very dependable.
Can still do 90MPH but I would not recommend pushing it this hard because of the

This truck just won't die. 220,000 miles (as of fall '08) and doesn't give me any crap no matter how far I drive. Does several 1000+ mile trips per year. Offroads like a dream. Great little runabout 4x4 cult favorite for a reason.
400 000kms on the clock and still rocking strong. Despite me beating it silly, freezing it into lakes in the winter and dragging it out a month later. 22re engine, a little weak, but 4wheeling doesn't need the same kind of power as towing. i would get another one, loved that the top comes off.Aug 10, 2008

Some stupid piggy in my town bought this truck and drove it a while. his stupid kid wrecked it and totaled it out. He wanted 1000 for it and i told him to stick it. He towed it out to the street and stickered it him self. i bought it for 100 bucks and plan on parting it out!Mar 06, 2008

Atom is named Atom because it had a very annoying security system that would just not shut up!!! It kept going off and drove me up a wall. I paid 500 for it with a blown engine. As you can see, i installed a new engine and got it running again. I sold it to my dad for 4500 dollars and he is still driving it around. He didnt take the time to break the engine in properly so who knows how long it will last. How sad!!! It was on its 3rd engine in just 177,000 miles, too!Mar 06, 2008

Only a 4-banger so the acceleration is not great on a heavier car such as this, and the suspension is pretty tight so it's a bouncy ride, but the 4-wheel drive is great and lots of body work and painting had been done on both rear fender panels to make it look great. Gets about 25 mpg on the highway. Good handling for an SUV. Has a big cargo area and the shell on the back is removable, so it's great for carting dogs around! Auto-locking hubs are nice, and the car has pretty good heat and really strong factory air. Really sturdy and 22-RE engines will run forever!Jan 04, 2008

Brake lights
Just noticed last night my brake lights were on when warming up my 87 4Runner at work. They were brighter than just the parking light glow. Did not see them get brighter when applying brakes and when I got home, with lights off, they did not come on while applying brake pedal. Bad brake switch possibly?

how do I fix the break light that works only when the lights are not on?
The break lights on both sides work when the lights are not on. When the lights are on the the left break light does not work. Checked the fuses, changed the bulb, not sure whats next
