The 1985 Buick Somerset Regal was the Pontiac Grand Am, just much more highly polished. I owned 2 versions, the 3.0L V6 with 4 speed automatic, as well as the 2.5L Tech Four, connected to a rare 5-speed stick.
The V6 suffered from a persistent issue with the crankshaft position sensor, which caused significant "no start" issues. When it ran, it was FAST. It screamed down the road like a car that size shouldn't have been able to. I easily achieved 140 in this car after a tune-up using splitfire plugs, and accel wires. The 2.5 was incredible for a 4-cylinder. When a new EGR valve, new plugs, wire, and a new throttle position sensor, I was getting 37 MPG in this car, and beating most Hondas off the line. The body squeaks, the the incredibly badly designed radio system, as well as the headliner falling, marred what could have otherwise been a very fun car to drive.Oct 11, 2010
