The 1984 Toyota Corolla ushered in the fifth generation of the car. The 1984 Corolla sedan got front-wheel drive, although the coupe, wagon and liftback remained on the old rear-drive chassis. Toyota kept the new 1.6 liter engine. However, halfway through the model year, the liftback and the coupe got a new engine, a dual-overhead cam version of the 1.6 liter engine with 124 horsepower. This new model was called the GT-S and has earned somewhat of a cult following.
The 1984 Toyota Corolla came in many body styles with several trim levels. The two- and four-door sedan came as a standard, DX or LE. The coupe came as an SR5 or GT-S.. The wagon came as a standard or DX. The liftback came as a SR5 and a GT-S.
Drivers of the 1984 Toyota Corolla sing its praises and many say it is the best car they have ever owned. The car is reliable, easy to maintain, and sturdy. Drivers also like how lightweight and small it is, saying it takes corners beautifully and is easy to park.

First car I learnt driving in.
Made with tin cans, so its light as hell.
Engine is small and so is the output power, but with such a light body, this car is
rather spritely.
Handling isn't fantastic, but it will get you from point A to B without much fuss.
Since its small, parking isn't much hassle.
Gets quite good fuel economy despite the age.Oct 29, 2011

Like it, it's a good start into any type of motor sport. Stylish, easy to work on, fun to drive. Gets great gas mileage, even when heavy on the throttle. Only downer is parts take awhile to get for it.Feb 15, 2011

This car is amazing to drive. Good on gas, I get about 35 mpg. When I brake, the car has a tendency to lurch forward a little bit. I love the shape of the car; 80s style for the win. The interior kinda sucks, but I just got new paint. It's Chrysler deep water blue with some green pearl. It isn't all that great at accelerating. It's really sensitive when you steer though. This year it's 26, but still going strong. I had to get the alternator and battery replaced, as well as the brakes. I replaced the radiator, fuel filter and pump, and windshield wipers just because.Aug 18, 2010

this is the best vehicle i have ever driven, and it a jow to own. only problem is the previous owners didnt take much care of her, so i got 26 years of neglect to deal with, but i love wrenching on her. she may not be the fastest or accelerate fast, but on a windy road there is nothing like it. the motor has 143xxx miles on her and is still going strong. only true problem is a typical toyota/wisconsin problem, rust. Performance is great still have to drop car and stiffen up suspension. Build Quality is good despite a few rattles and squeaks . Love the look of this car and it's Exclusivity very rare car. low on maintenance and is a lovely all round car,fun to drive on ...the open road and in town. Gets a bit thirsty if you keep racing the engine but otherwise very light on fuelJun 08, 2010

Perhaps one of the most fan boy backed old school cars on the road today. Mines was originally an SR5 converted to GTS motor, with the stock SR5 rear end (totally crap). lightweight, easily tossible car with lots of potential to defeat cars that are much more modern on a track.
parts aplenty, great local parts support from local ae86 forums (dori kaze) cheap to mod, cheap to run/ insure, easy to fix, great car to teach people to work on cars. very reliable car for daily driving, yet fun enough to terrorize drift courses during weekend.Mar 18, 2010

This will be an incredibly biased review, so I'm just gonna keep it simple and use their bulleted suggestion list!
Performance
Really, it should say, "Performance, or Lack There of!" The handling is just incredible for what was an economy car in its hey-day. Body roll is minimal, until you really push it hard, and the suspension strikes a good blend of ride quality and performance. However, that could be attributed to the age and wear on the car, and not necessarily the design of the suspension; but in any case, its a good quality! But for as impressive as the handling is, the engine is a huge let down. Power is barely, and I mean just barely adequate for around-town driving. It is nearly impossible to do any type of merging without flooring the car and keeping it in second gear until the engine starts screaming around 5 or 6k RPMs. And even then, acceleration is glacial. I swear icebergs move faster than this car sometimes! The one bright side to this is, the exhaust note (with the Flowmaster muffler that is) is quite enjoyable throughout the rev-range, so wringing the motor out is music to my somewhat tainted ears. Also, the gearbox has a nice, mechanical feel that makes it a pleasure to row through.
Build Quality
For a car that is 25 years old already, with over 160k miles on the odometer, the entire package has held up extremely well. Some bits of the interior are starting to become fragile (like the dash pad) but most of that can be attributed to sun damage and just normal wear and tear. The seats have no rips at all, all gauges function as they should, the vent controls all work flawlessly and even the mechanism on the passenger's seat that allows you to get into the back seat of the car works as it should. 75% of the car is completely original (the other 25% being the paint, wheels, muffler and body work). Even the anemic engine fires up even on the coldest of mornings without much complaint. (to be continued)Mar 22, 2009

Looked like hell, three of the windows were hard to use, scary to drive on an interstate, had a "pulse-wave" shudder at high speed... But I loved that little car. For a first car, it did its job just fine. And, last I heard, it was still on the road.Sep 19, 2008

This was our second car. Our first one was too small to travel any distance in. This had a good stereo and a clean interior. We drove the living daylights out of this car in the two years we owned it. It was quite tired when we bought our new car to replace it.Aug 10, 2008

i like it because it gets me from point A to point B. Although when it gets cold it needs to be jumped every time i try to start it. I hate that I don't know more about cars. So pretty much it gets me where I need to most of the timeAug 05, 2008

This machine is the car of my dreams, and has been for many years. Its dated styling and simple RWD solid axle platform just add to its already strong old-school charm. Many may recognize this car from the late 90s japanese animation Initial D, as well as from Polyphony Digitals Gran Turismo series for the Sony Playstation (1,2,3).
Its 1.6 liter DOHC 16 valve (the 4AG-E) Yamaha-developped engine with a lofty 7300rpm redline putting out a mere 126hp in GTS trim may be laughable by todays standards, but back in 1983, it was the most volumetrically efficient motor ever released on a production car and its 2100 lbs curb weight made it a perfect first race car for anyone wanting to learn the ropes.
My car has been through 3 newer engines already, and updated 1994 high compression 20 valve Silvertop 4AG with inidividual throttle bodies ( 8000rpm) and a revised 20 valve, known as the Blacktop 4AG with lighter internals and even higher compression and redline were put to use.
The car now sits gutted open, stitch and seam welded with a custom transmisison cage and firewall to house a very special and extremely rare 2004 toyota Altezza RS200z engine and 6 -speed transmission. This engine, known as the 4th generation of the 2.0 liter 16 valve DOHC Yamaha developped 3SGE ( aka BEAMS) puts out 215 hp and revs to a stratospheric 8500 rpm, all while making a song that could make Metallica green with envy.Aug 03, 2008

I got this car when it had 132,000 miles on it. It ran like a top needing only an alternator and a clutch in the 6 years I owned it. I sold it for more than I had paid for it with 203,000 miles on it and it ran for that owner until 237,000 when the wiring finally started shorting out. It still ran but was sold for parts.May 18, 2008

I bought this car for 400$ and it was one of my favorit cars i've driven. Like most racing fans know this s the ultimite drifting car (initial-D). For a 1984 this car had a real cool interior, fully ajustable seats and believe it or not and electric sun roof.Jan 12, 2008
