1984 Toyota Camry Preview summaryImage

Toyota introduced the Camry as an independent name to the US market in 1982 for the 1983 model year. The 1984 Camry saw no changes from the previous year, as 1984 was the first full year the car was on the market. It was typical of Japanese imports of the time: small and boxy, but sturdy. It was available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback.

The 1984 Toyota Camry came with a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter, 92-horsepower engine and was available in either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. The 1984 Toyota Camry did face two recalls. One was because of a malfunctioning cruise control, and one because of problems with the alternator. Both the 1984 Toyota Camry sedan and the hatchback were available in LE and DLX trim levels.

The Camry quickly became a strong seller, almost immediately giving its longtime rival, the Honda Accord, some stiff competition.

Camry bowed during the 1983 model year as Toyota belatedly switched its compact car from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. Built in Japan, the Camry model line consisted of a four-door sedan and a four-door hatchback, which Toyota called the Liftback.Nov 24, 2010

I was so completely in love with this car and still am. The performance was slow and handled "like a boat" (I'm convinced their designers spent serious effort to make it handle that much like a boat). I still took it sideways using E-brake turns on gravel. Held solid for 25 years with basic maintenance. It even survived a timing belt blow despite having an interference engine. I believe the torque converter is what finally died and we had to let it go. It had an exhaust leak making it sound halfway between a ricer and a diesel truck but louder. Its name is "The Deathtrap". The most fun car I've driven and I still miss it.Jun 25, 2009
