1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Preview summaryImage

The 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon was a rear-wheel-drive vehicle that could carry seven to nine passengers. It was powered by a 67-horsepower, 2.0-liter, air-cooled four-cylinder engine with fuel injection. A four-speed manual transmission was standard, while a three-speed automatic transmission was available as an option.

The Vanagon was also available with an efficient 2.0-liter, water-cooled diesel engine that generated 48 horsepower. The diesel Vanagon is distinguished by its dual front grilles.

The Vanagon was fairly well equipped with rack and pinion steering, power-assisted brakes, and front and rear independent suspension. Standard features also included front bucket seats, a rear window defogger, two-speed windshield wipers, vinyl upholstery, and a folding rear bench seat that provided additional cargo space. Air conditioning and a rear window wiper were among the options.

In addition to the standard model, a Vanagon Camper version was available. It came with a pop top, a rear seat that folded out into a bed, a refrigerator, a stove, a sink and a pantry.

Drivers noted that while the Vanagon handled well, it was underpowered and would not win any races. One benefit of that low power was good gas mileage, according to a number of drivers, who also appreciated the Vanagon for its versatility and comfort.

See comments above but as a camper it is very practical. Replacel all parts with VW recommended products to give it longer life. The internet shopping now makes it easy to get replacement parts. One will also have to find a VW Garage which understands this type of vehicle. It is a fun vehicle to ownApr 30, 2014

This is a fun car to drive and it has everything including the kitchen sink! Well designed German car and fuel efficient. Sleeps 4 adults and with the original side tent it can sleep an additional 10! This is not a putt putt car it can keep up with the best of them as long as you know how to shift going up hills and on curves. Front seats swivle and have their own table for socializing with the back seat. Bench seat folds down to make a nice comfortable bed with it's own swing out table for eating or plugging in your computer and turn it into your office! The refrigerator even has a mini ice tray and works perfectly to keep all your goodies nice and cold and can run off of propane or electric. Two stainless steel burners and sink are in perfect condition to take care of whipping up some gourmet eggs and cleaning up the mess! Plenty of compartments for dishes and pots and pans, two pantry's, closet for properly hanging up your clothes and the bench seat opens up for lot of camping storage. Lots of cubbie holes everywhere for fishing poles and tools and books etc. It's your own private get away vehicle! Good on gas and has a locking gas cap! Extras like mosquito nets and curtains and dividers give privacy and comfort. Pop up top sleep 2 adults and also has a cargo bucket to hold tents or ??? If you love camping and adventures you would absolutely love this car! 1982 Air Cooled Westy Campervan!Jul 21, 2012
