1982 Volkswagen Jetta Preview summaryImage

A Rabbit with a trunk is basically how you can describe the 1982 Volkswagen Jetta. Built on the same platform, offering the same standard features, and powered by the same engine, the Jetta added a spacious trunk and, Voila! the hatchback magically transformed into a sedan.

Like the Rabbit, the 1982 Jetta was popular for its performance capabilities as well as its affordability. It was Volkswagen's entry into the economy compact sedan segment, and its low initial cost, combined with great gas mileage and few repairs made it a magnet for first-time buyers, recent grads, or budget-conscious families alike. This versatility is a key to the Jetta's enduring popularity.

A 1.7-liter, 4-cylinder, 74-hp engine and 5-speed manual transmission came standard in either the 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan. A 3-speed automatic was optional, but most drivers who have tried both agree the manual makes the best use of what they feel is an underpowered engine. But the 1982 Jetta does handle nicely and feels safe and confident on the road. Owners love the fuel economy, with some reporting upwards of 40 mpg from their own experiences. The interior, though nothing to write home about, is functional and comfortable, with room for four.

I absolutely hate the auto transmission. I feel like everyone is pointing at me while I drive down the road. It has a horrible start/idle/overheating issue which no one seems to be able to address. I never thought I'd live to see the day when I hated an MK1 Jetta but this one wins the prize.Sep 23, 2013
