1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Reviews, Pricing & Specs
Write a review
In 1970, GM lifted a restriction on engines over 400 ci, but in 1971, it required all cars to run on unleaded gasoline and to meet strict emission standards. So what's a muscle car supposed to do?
Chevy responded by shrinking the base engine in the 1971 Chevelle, taking it down to a 350-ci V8 rated at 245 horsepower. The top-of-the-line was the LS5 454-ci V8 engine rated at 365 horsepower, down almost 100 horses from the previous year.
Luckily, buyers could special order LS6 engines which generated 325 net horsepower, and 425 gross horsepower. Phew!
Just short of a quarter of the 80,000 Chevelles sold that year were bought with the 454 engines (19,292 were sold).

Raw 454 Ci V8 power ! Over 450 Hp and 480 Ft lbs. of torque. Big car rides nice handles Ok . Braking not too bad considering the weight (3500 lbs.).Build quality very solid (they just don't make them like that any more).Appearance stunning ! Especially at sunset. The red paint with the wide black racing stripes. Cost of ownership not bad considering I purchased the car when it was 7 yrs old.Fuel mileage when I got done with my mods was between 15-18 mpg.Fun ! nothing but fun. When you can press the accelerator to the floor and have tires smoking till you either let off or are traveling at over 90 mph. Wow ... Dec 03, 2010

Excellent car. Show Quality. Viper Blue Metallic w/ Bright Silver Metallic stripes. The
engine is a Chevrolet Big Block 396 with about 325 hp. Transmission is a 700R4
overdrive. American Racing Torque Thrust II Wheels. Car is worth about $40,000.
Stripes were painted on the car last spring. Apr 05, 2010

They deleted my other review and i forgot what i wrote. Amazing acceleration, brakes arent too good, turns like a boat. Horrible gas mileage (but who cares). Will burn out with just the thought of giving more than a hair of throttle. Totally cool.Oct 05, 2009

This car might be old but you dont got to worry abou tgetting blown by because it has the muscle and the quickness to keep up with the best. Although you might not get the best gas mileage the pure enjoyment is worth it.Sep 29, 2009

This was my far all time favorite of all cars owned. 1971 SS Chevelle, Leather Interior, 454 BB, Muncie 4-Speed, and dual exhaust. Absolutely fun car to drive. Nothing like the sound and feel of a Big Block muscle car. Dec 27, 2008

The '71 Chevelle was a car that stood in the shadows of the 1970 model for many many years, but latley it has been getting more attention and respect as one of Chevrolets true classics. It may not have carried the massive Horsepower over from 1970, but it definaltly kept the sleek and classic muscle car body lines. This car is great for any Classic car lover who wants a fun reliable old car that has loads of aftermarket parts available all over the USA and Canada.Jan 28, 2008
