This was a great first car but with terrible fuel economy. Had a classic look may never go out of style, plenty of room, and was surprisingly comfortable (considering it's basically a truck). It never broke down and was perfect for western New York winters. It was eventually sold to my next door neighbor, where it terrorized me for three more years, sitting there in his driveway.Dec 22, 2014

We absolutely love our Jeep. We will probably buy a second one to replace our Ford Taurus Wagon as our other winter vehicle. Our summer cars are both Sports Cars (a Mazda Miata and a Datsun 240-Z) so we're into good handling - and despite being an SUV, the Jeep Cherokee is a VERY good handling vehicle - we have Rancho Shocks on it and the suspension is nice and tight - it takes curves great. Also has very spirited acceleration. It is a blast to drive in snowy weather - nothing stops it (we have Bridgestone Blizzaks on the original 15" wheels for winter and a set of Goodyear Fortera TripleTreds on 16" Wheels for the rest of the year. Gas Mileage is a bit low compared to more modern SUVs (we average around 14-15 mpg). Now that it's getting older, minor wiring issues are starting to crop up (Drivers Door Speaker no longer works, 3rd Brakelight only lights if tailgate is open, Electric Window switches on passenger doors stopped working even when master switch is in "On" position, electric door locks only function when door is in certain positions). Fortunately, the Driver's Master set of switches for the windows still works - so I have all the control... :-) The Engines and Drivelines in these Jeeps go on forever - but as they age, smaller issues happen with wiring, alternator, etc. But bear in mind, I've now got nearly 200,000 miles on it and it is 16 years old. I remember a time when if one got 100,000 miles and 6 or 7 years of good service out of a car (or Jeep) one was doing good. its my off road rig on 33's 6 inch lift winch bumpers front and rear, rock sliders, hid 6000k HID coversion, HD steering, CB soon to have a locked 8.8 with 4.10's I built it my self with the help of some friends. I was in to looking good but one you tag a tree thats pritty much over Its a blast to drive and goes almost anywhere. This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owne, hands down. She has 258,000 miles on her and everything works. I mean even the lights in the ashtrays. She runs smooth, starts every time, has never let me down, and has been up to her wipers in mud and water. I can't praise this vehicle enough. It accelerates really quickly, but the brakes are a lot less sensitive than my other vehicles. The back hatch rattles a bit when you drive, but other than that, it's nice. It's lifted, so the gas mileage is a bit more than it would be normally, but altogether it's not bad at all. It's a VERY fun car to drive-- offroading in this thing is the best. :)Dec 16, 2008

This car rules!! with the sturdy jeep construction and the monstrous 4.0 litre engine and switchable sports box(automatics only) it makes for eye opening acceleration and the power for towing anything from a trailer to a tractor....Off road capability isnt the best, however, with its good design and sturdy construction if you bounce into a few rocks or hitch up on a tree stump dont worry too much(trust me I know) Jul 31, 2008

Stock its pretty tough, the 4.0 has more then enough power and with stock tires you can easily break loose and let it slide or play grip for handling that can keep up with any car I've met(not to say its a track car, just that your average driver can't readily out run you).So If you are into a fun but useful car, this is for you, plus its a jeep, and what makes a jeep a jeep is what you do to it, like lifting and bumpers etc. Thats another plus, there are so many options that if you want it you can have it on the XJ, and if you can't buy it, You can fabricate it yourself following someone elses directions(as its already been done if you're just now thinking of it).Mar 22, 2008
