Ram offered the 1500 in an R/T trim level between the 2009 and 2017 model years. It was only available on the regular cab, short box, 4x2 trucks, and it was intended to provide a sporty, rather compact alternative to the giant pickups for which the brand was known. The R/T wasn’t a tape stripe package, and it wasn’t quite the SRT-10 Viper-engined pickup, either. It split the difference, still providing all of the things that a truck is good for, with some go-fast parts and an attractive price tag. The engine was a 390-hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8, and all of the R/T trim levels used the eight-speed 8HP70 automatic transmission from German supplier ZF. They all had a snappier rear gear ratio with a limited slip differential, and they got some handling improvements as well.
