What’s New for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma enters its fourth generation with a 2024-model-year redesign. The new truck is going all in on turbocharged power, dropping the naturally aspirated V6 engine in favor of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines–one of which is a hybrid. Other major changes abound, including the introduction of an all-new trim level: Trailhunter.

Trailhunter, a name first revealed at the 2022 SEMA show in Las Vegas, is meant to provide a purpose-built overlanding rig straight from the factory. The truck sits on 33-inch tires with a 2-inch lift at the front and a 1.5-inch lift at the rear when compared with lower-level Tacomas. An available front stabilizer bar disconnect increases articulation by 10%, and it will be compatible with Toyota-approved lift kits.

Toyota teamed with ARB, Old Man Emu (OME), and Rigid to outfit the Tacoma Trailhunter with a range of features shoppers would normally have to source from third parties. These include off-road shocks (from OME), LED fog lamps (from Rigid), and metal rock rails and a back rack (from ARB). The Trailhunter also comes equipped with three pre-wired auxiliary switches for additional accessories.

Design

The new Tacoma looks more angular and aggressive than before. While the previous-generation Tacoma had a lot of character lines and creasing, the 2024 model takes that styling to another level. In particular, the front chin spoiler on TRD Sport and Limited trims helps the truck look like it's sitting lower to the ground, while a trailing roofline across the model lineup makes it look like it’s moving, even when parked.

This is a truck built for adventure, and it shows. The roof features integrated attachment holes for adding aftermarket parts like roofracks, and it comes fitted with watertight channel sealer when those holes aren’t in use.

Two body styles are offered: a four-door double cab, which is familiar by now, and a new two-door XtraCab, offered on the SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner trim levels. Both styles are available with 5- or 6-foot beds.

The new XtraCab seats two, rather than four, as Toyota has decided to drop the small jump seats (and the clamshell doors) that it used to package in Access Cab Tacomas. Those seats likely wouldn’t have passed modern safety regulations, so Toyota has optimized the area behind the front seats for storage instead of passenger space.

Powertrain

Two new engines debut for the 2024 Tacoma, although we’ve seen them applied in other Toyota models. The first is a standard 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 224 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque in the base SR trim. Move up the trim ladder, however, and it jumps to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft when paired with the eight-speed automatic transmission. Opt for the still-available six-speed manual transmission, and the power numbers take a slight hit, down to 270 hp and 310 lb-ft.

A 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine is also available. Dubbed the i-Force MAX, this mill produces an astonishing 326 hp and 465 lb-ft.

Toyota will sell the Tacoma with rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD). RWD models come standard with a limited slip differential, while 4WD Tacomas get a two-speed transfer case with low and high range. The new Tacoma is built atop the TNGA-F platform, using a boxed, steel ladder frame. These are the same underpinnings found in the Tundra and Sequoia. A redesigned multi-link coil suspension supports the Tacoma’s rear end, although SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner trim levels retain rear leaf springs. All Tacomas, regardless of trim level, now benefit from four-wheel disc brakes–the rear wheels no longer use drum brakes.

Finally, SR5 i-Force and TRD PreRunner trim levels deliver the Tacoma’s maximum, 6,500-pound towing capacity, while the TRD Off-Road maxes out the model’s payload capacity at 1,709 pounds.

Interior

Inside, the Tacoma is a cacophony of chunky, interlocking design features. Everything from the dashboard to the floor mats is designed to look tough and purposeful, but that isn’t to say the Tacoma’s interior is without color or zest. Dashboard trim pieces are available in a range of colors, with blue and red popping brightly against the gray and black switchgear.

Non-hybrid, double-cab Tacomas now offer three times more storage under the rear seat, and those rear seats now fold flat to provide more flexible storage options. On the driver’s side dashboard, you’ll find a QR code in a hidden side pocket. Scanning this will pull up dimension specs to help you 3D print extra accessories.

Technology

The 2024 Tacoma comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, but higher trim levels flaunt Toyota’s uber-impressive 14-inch touchscreen display. Bright, colorful, and with sharp graphics, this is a massive improvement over the third-generation Tacoma’s tech offering. Response times are quick, icons are huge, and the interface still features a simple, easy-to-understand design.

Multiple USB-C ports are available throughout the cabin. One lives in the lower dashboard, while two more serve the front seats and two extra USB-C ports are available for the rear seat.

An available wireless charging pad is positioned vertically on the lower dashboard, and while a 7-inch driver information display comes standard, higher trim levels get a beautiful 12.3-inch display with four different view styles. Finally, an available JBL 10-speaker audio system comes with a removable portable speaker. When docked, it’s the center speaker for the system. When not, it’s a water resistant bluetooth speaker with six hours of runtime.

Safety

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) is well featured, with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping and lane-tracing assist, and road-sign recognition. However, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available, they will not be included as standard equipment on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

Pricing

As of this writing, Toyota has not announced pricing for the 2024 Tacoma. The midsize truck segment has become extremely competitive, and we believe the available SR trim will help keep the Tacoma’s base price thousands of dollars below many of its competitors, which start with higher-spec trim levels. Specifically, we’d expect the Tacoma’s pricing to fall in line with the Nissan Frontier's, and while top-shelf Tacomas will undoubtedly climb into the $40- or $50,000 range, lower-end models should be priced lower than the Ford Ranger, the Chevy Colorado, the GMC Canyon, and the Jeep Gladiator.
