The Toyota Tacoma's current nationwide average price is $32,035, and its lowest point over the past year was $30,557. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Tacoma is a strong used-truck choice if you value durability, off-road ability, and long-term appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.5/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, rugged design, and strong resale value. They also like its overall comfort and the way it works well for both daily driving and work-related use.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2019 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs across recent expert-reviewed years are a noisy cabin, cramped rear-seat space in some versions, and interiors that lean functional rather than upscale. Some model years also bring underwhelming power or older-feeling technology.
31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Tacoma models reliable?
The Toyota Tacoma has a strong reputation for reliability, durability, and long-lasting performance across its model years. Owners and experts consistently highlight its rugged build, strong resale value, and dependable everyday use.
- Owners rate the Toyota Tacoma between 4.2 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some older examples can bring higher repair or upkeep concerns, so a careful history check matters.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Tacoma?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 78% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 95.8% |
| 2025 | 94.2% |
| 2024 | 90.6% |
| 2023 | 85.8% |

| 2021 | 72% |
| 2020 | 66.3% |
| 2019 | 63.5% |
| 2018 | 60.6% |
| 2017 | 60% |
| 2016 | 59.8% |
| 2015 | 60.7% |
| 2014 | 60.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0)
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: According to the EPA and the test truck’s window sticker, the TRD Pro should have returned 23 mpg in combined driving. Driving only in Eco mode, we observed 17.5 mpg on our Southern California fuel economy testing loop. During a drive to the far reaches of metro Los Angeles to an off-highway vehicle park, the Tacoma averaged 17.6 mpg in a mix of city, highway, and off-road driving.
Which Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2026 Toyota Tacoma offers these trims:
- SR: The entry point in the lineup, with the broadest access to the Tacoma’s core setup and the lowest starting price.
- SR5: A step up for shoppers who want a more well-rounded everyday Tacoma with broader appeal.
- TRD PreRunner: A distinct choice for buyers who want a more specialized truck setup in the lineup.
- TRD Sport: Adds a sportier character and sits in the middle of the range for buyers who want a more style-forward Tacoma.
- TRD Off-Road: The best-value trim for many shoppers who want off-road hardware and capability without moving to the highest-priced versions.
- Limited: The more comfort-oriented trim for buyers who want a more premium-feeling Tacoma.
- Trailhunter: A hybrid-only trim aimed at buyers who want a more adventure-focused setup.
- TRD Pro: The top off-road trim, with the most specialized hardware and the highest price in the lineup.
What Toyota Tacoma do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Tacoma years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 8,552 | 33.6% |
| 2025 | 7,547 | 34.1% |
| 2023 | 7,351 | 32.9% |
| 2022 | 6,164 | 31.9% |
| 2026 | 4,667 | 34.1% |
| 2021 | 4,641 | 32% |
Higher-volume years usually draw more shoppers because they offer a wider selection of trims, prices, and deal opportunities. That makes them easier to compare side by side when you’re shopping used.
What is the Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $39,319 | −5.87% |
| 2018 | $26,990 | −3.55% |
| 2016 | $23,592 | −2.92% |

| 2024 | $38,008 | −2.62% |
| 2019 | $28,976 | −2.3% |
| 2023 | $35,818 | −2.28% |
| 2017 | $25,753 | −1.83% |

| 2021 | $32,052 | −1.08% |
| 2014 | $19,169 | +0.83% |
Most Tacoma model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want prices that have eased from a year ago. The changes are generally modest, with several years showing only small declines. One model year is slightly up, which shows that not every Tacoma follows the same pricing pattern.
The 2014 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2021, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Every 2026 Tacoma has Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), which includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, road-sign assist, and high-beam assist.

Should I buy a used Toyota Tacoma now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.87% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −2.62%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 34.1% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.6%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $38,008. The Toyota Tacoma offers a strong reputation for durability, reliability, and long-term value.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: A 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the base Tacoma SR, it makes 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. In all other models, it provides 278 hp and 317 lb-ft. Reviewed a 2025 Toyota Limited Double Cab 4WD on Nov 9, 2025
I bought the Limited to get the retracting running boards for easier access. It has everything you can think of and then some. It has a dash cam to record your drive. Not something I will ever use. It has remote start from an app on your phone. After year one its $15 a month. Ridiculous! It rides nice with a solid feel and has plenty of power when you need it. Yes the back seat is a bit small but doable for average height passengers. The dash screen is too big in my opinion, almost obstruct your view to the right side of the truck. The seats are comfortable and the seat position is good. The fit and finish is good!

The Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab not to be confused with Double Cab. Is new though I bought it used but at 17K it's close to new. While I haven't had it long enough for a full review. I have had Toyota PU's before and the last one I had went 225,000 miles and I still sold it for $2200 9/10 years later after I moved from MN to FL. This one has great pickup off of the 2.4 Liter Turbo and though it takes a climb to get into I'm looking into side railing steps via online suppliers. Overall I am happy with the purchase though I did bite in on the extended warranty since my trade in a downpayment brought the montly costs down low enough to make it affordable. I see F-150's and F-250's and Dodge Ram Trucks of similar make and size but for my money Toyota Truck are legendary for their ability to take wear and tear.

Toyota Tacoma test drive
overall
Toyota sells many versions of the 2026 Tacoma, but we can’t see why the TRD Pro needs to be one of them.
We’d bet good money that most people who buy a Tacoma TRD Pro—one of the most off-road-capable Tacoma models—won’t use it to blast across the desert with wild abandon. Buyers will probably want to consider a different version of Toyota’s midsize pickup truck, which is available in two cab styles, two bed lengths, several powertrain combinations, and multiple trim levels.
Verdict: The 2026 Tacoma TRD Pro sells a fantasy, not a reality. Given some of the compromises it requires, we think people who want an expensive, off-road-ready Tacoma would be happier with the Trailhunter model.
