Is the Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Tacoma is a strong used-truck choice if you want durability, capability, and long-term value. The all-generations owner rating is 4.53/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, off-road ability, and rugged character. They also frequently highlight strong resale value and everyday usefulness, especially for work and active lifestyles.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2019 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in expert reviews are a cramped back seat, fuel economy that trails expectations in some versions, and interior materials that can feel basic for the price.
34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Tacoma models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Tacoma as durable, dependable, and built for long-term use. Expert reviews also reinforce its reputation for reliability and strong resale value.
- Owners rate the Toyota Tacoma between 4.2 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk is generally lower than you might expect for a truck with this much age and mileage spread, especially if you choose a well-kept example with a clean history.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Tacoma?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 78.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96% |
| 2025 | 94.1% |
| 2024 | 90.6% |
| 2023 | 85.8% |
| 2022 | 78.8% |

| 2020 | 66.4% |
| 2019 | 63.6% |
| 2018 | 60.5% |
| 2017 | 60% |
| 2016 | 59.7% |
| 2015 | 60.9% |
| 2014 | 61.2% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: According to the EPA and the test truck’s window sticker, the TRD Pro should have returned 23 mpg in combined driving. Driving only in Eco mode, we observed 17.5 mpg on our Southern California fuel economy testing loop. During a drive to the far reaches of metro Los Angeles to an off-highway vehicle park, the Tacoma averaged 17.6 mpg in a mix of city, highway, and off-road driving.
Which Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2026 Toyota Tacoma offers these trims:
- SR: The entry trim gives you the broad Tacoma lineup and the choice of cab, bed, drivetrain, and transmission combinations, making it the starting point for shoppers who want the most basic path into the truck.
- SR5: This trim adds a step up in everyday equipment and is a sensible value pick for buyers who want more flexibility without moving into the more specialized versions.
- TRD PreRunner: This trim adds a more rugged look and trail-ready attitude for buyers who want a tougher personality in a rear-drive setup.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds a sportier street-focused character and is a good fit if you want a more expressive Tacoma for daily driving.
- TRD Off-Road: This trim adds off-road hardware and is the right choice if you want a Tacoma built for trail use.
- Limited: This trim adds a more premium feel and suits buyers who want a more upscale daily driver.
- Trailhunter: This hybrid-only trim adds a more adventure-focused setup for buyers who want a factory-built overlanding style.
- TRD Pro: This trim adds the most extreme off-road hardware and is the top choice if you want the most capable factory Tacoma.
What Toyota Tacoma do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Tacoma years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 8,509 | 36.9% |
| 2025 | 7,519 | 37% |
| 2023 | 7,302 | 35.8% |
| 2022 | 6,120 | 35% |
| 2026 | 4,653 | 37.1% |
| 2021 | 4,606 | 34.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, more trim choices, and a better chance of finding the right price and equipment mix.
What is the Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

| 2025 | $39,347 | −5.86% |
| 2018 | $26,999 | −3.54% |
| 2015 | $20,195 | −2.98% |
| 2016 | $23,640 | −2.83% |
| 2024 | $38,033 | −2.71% |
| 2019 | $28,972 | −2.44% |
| 2023 | $35,857 | −2.29% |
| 2022 | $32,849 | −1.89% |
| 2017 | $25,785 | −1.85% |
| 2020 | $30,349 | −1.7% |
| 2021 | $32,118 | −0.99% |
| 2014 | $19,134 | +0.38% |
Most Tacoma model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The changes are mostly modest, with only one model year showing a slight increase. That pattern suggests the Tacoma remains in demand, but recent inventory has become a little more buyer-friendly.
The 2014 and 2021 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2021, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Customers say
The Toyota Tacoma has built a solid reputation for reliability and performance across its model years. Owners consistently praise its durability, off-road capabilities, and overall comfort. Many appreciate its strong resale value and rugged design, making it a favored option for both casual driving and work-related tasks. However, some drivers express concerns about cramped interiors, the absence of modern technology features, and pricing, particularly in comparison to competitors. Overall, the Tacoma is viewed as a dependable choice with a good balance of performance and utility.

Reviewed a 2025 Toyota Limited Double Cab 4WD on Nov 9, 2025
I bought the Limited to get the retracting running boards for easier access. It has everything you can think of and then some. It has a dash cam to record your drive. Not something I will ever use. It has remote start from an app on your phone. After year one its $15 a month. Ridiculous! It rides nice with a solid feel and has plenty of power when you need it. Yes the back seat is a bit small but doable for average height passengers. The dash screen is too big in my opinion, almost obstruct your view to the right side of the truck. The seats are comfortable and the seat position is good. The fit and finish is good!

The Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab not to be confused with Double Cab. Is new though I bought it used but at 17K it's close to new. While I haven't had it long enough for a full review. I have had Toyota PU's before and the last one I had went 225,000 miles and I still sold it for $2200 9/10 years later after I moved from MN to FL. This one has great pickup off of the 2.4 Liter Turbo and though it takes a climb to get into I'm looking into side railing steps via online suppliers. Overall I am happy with the purchase though I did bite in on the extended warranty since my trade in a downpayment brought the montly costs down low enough to make it affordable. I see F-150's and F-250's and Dodge Ram Trucks of similar make and size but for my money Toyota Truck are legendary for their ability to take wear and tear.

Toyota Tacoma test drive
overall
Toyota sells many versions of the 2026 Tacoma, but we can’t see why the TRD Pro needs to be one of them.
We’d bet good money that most people who buy a Tacoma TRD Pro—one of the most off-road-capable Tacoma models—won’t use it to blast across the desert with wild abandon. Buyers will probably want to consider a different version of Toyota’s midsize pickup truck, which is available in two cab styles, two bed lengths, several powertrain combinations, and multiple trim levels.
Verdict: The 2026 Tacoma TRD Pro sells a fantasy, not a reality. Given some of the compromises it requires, we think people who want an expensive, off-road-ready Tacoma would be happier with the Trailhunter model.
