Is the Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Tacoma has a strong track record with shoppers who want a rugged, durable truck with broad appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.53/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, durability, off-road capability, and strong resale value. Many also like its rugged design and overall comfort, especially when they want a truck that can handle both daily use and tougher outings.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2019 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs that come up most often are a cramped cabin, pricing that runs high for the segment, and technology that can feel dated in older years. Even so, the Tacoma remains a compelling used buy if you want a truck with a clear identity and long-term appeal.
30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Tacoma models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Tacoma’s durability, long-lasting performance, and strong resale value. Across the model years in the data, it earns a reputation as a truck you can count on for everyday use, work, and off-road duty.
- Owners rate the Toyota Tacoma between 4.2 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to condition, mileage, and maintenance history than to the Tacoma nameplate itself.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Tacoma?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 with Lane Tracing Assist, lane-departure alert with steering assist, Proactive Driving Assist, road-sign assist, and an emergency stop system
- Infotainment: 8-inch standard touchscreen with Toyota Audio Multimedia, plus a 14-inch center display on higher trims and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 20 mpg combined with the manual transmission and 4WD, up to 21 mpg with 4WD and the automatic, and 23 mpg with FWD
Which Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma offers these trims:
- SR: The base trim starts with 17-inch steel wheels, the standard i-FORCE turbocharged four-cylinder, and the new cabin layout; it suits you if you want the entry point into the redesigned Tacoma.
- SR5: This trim adds the new coil spring multi-link rear suspension on the Double Cab version and is a strong value choice if you want a more rounded everyday setup.
- TRD Pre-Runner: This trim keeps leaf springs in the rear and adds a distinct off-road-oriented setup for buyers who want a more specialized truck character.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds sport-tuned shocks and 18-inch alloys, giving you a more road-focused feel and a sharper look.
- TRD Off-Road: This trim adds monotube Bilstein shocks and is the best fit if you want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware in a dedicated package.
- Limited: This trim adds heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, an available adaptive variable suspension, and 18-inch alloys; it is the best-value choice if you want the most comfort and convenience.
- TRD Pro: This trim adds FOX QS3 adjustable internal bypass shocks and is aimed at buyers who want the most serious off-road capability.
- Trailhunter: This trim adds Toyota’s partnership with Old Man Emu and is built for overlanding-focused use.
What Toyota Tacoma do most buyers choose?

The 2014 and 2015 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2015, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Toyota Tacoma now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.64% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −2.56%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 32.9% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 32.6%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $38,620. The Toyota Tacoma offers a rugged, durable character that has made it a long-running favorite with truck shoppers.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque on most trims, and the eight-speed automatic transmission replaces the outgoing six-speed auto.
- Tech: 8 inches is the standard screen size, higher trims get a 14-inch center display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 now includes Lane Tracing Assist, lane-departure alert with steering assist, Proactive Driving Assist, road-sign assist, and an emergency stop system.
- Starting price: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes at a base MSRP of $31,500 before the destination fee.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Reviewed a 2025 Toyota Limited Double Cab 4WD on Nov 9, 2025
I bought the Limited to get the retracting running boards for easier access. It has everything you can think of and then some. It has a dash cam to record your drive. Not something I will ever use. It has remote start from an app on your phone. After year one its $15 a month. Ridiculous! It rides nice with a solid feel and has plenty of power when you need it. Yes the back seat is a bit small but doable for average height passengers. The dash screen is too big in my opinion, almost obstruct your view to the right side of the truck. The seats are comfortable and the seat position is good. The fit and finish is good!

The Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab not to be confused with Double Cab. Is new though I bought it used but at 17K it's close to new. While I haven't had it long enough for a full review. I have had Toyota PU's before and the last one I had went 225,000 miles and I still sold it for $2200 9/10 years later after I moved from MN to FL. This one has great pickup off of the 2.4 Liter Turbo and though it takes a climb to get into I'm looking into side railing steps via online suppliers. Overall I am happy with the purchase though I did bite in on the extended warranty since my trade in a downpayment brought the montly costs down low enough to make it affordable. I see F-150's and F-250's and Dodge Ram Trucks of similar make and size but for my money Toyota Truck are legendary for their ability to take wear and tear.

Toyota Tacoma test drive
overall
The Tacoma is still truckin' right along. Toyota marks the start of the model's fourth generation with a ground-up redesign.
The fourth-gen Tacoma is also the first Tacoma to share a platform with the larger Toyota Tundra. (The TNGA-F platform also underpins the Sequoia and the just-revived Land Cruiser.) It launches in six trim levels, each powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and the Tacoma's first-ever hybrid powertrain is due in the spring of 2024, along with two additional trims. We traveled to Malibu, CA to drive the all-new Tacoma in all of its gas-only guises.
