Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the Toyota 4Runner earns strong marks from owners across the board, and the all-generations user rating backs that up. The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the 4Runner for its reliability, off-road capability, and comfort. Spacious interiors and rugged, long-lasting character also come up again and again, especially from shoppers who want a dependable SUV with real utility.
Expert reviews rate the 2014 and 2025 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on fuel economy, road noise, and the more basic feel of some interiors and tech in older years. Those are the kinds of compromises you weigh against the 4Runner's durability, resale strength, and all-terrain ability.
30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota 4Runner models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for rugged durability, long-lasting value, and strong off-road capability. Expert reviews also reinforce that reputation by highlighting its solid construction and dependable character across model years.
- Owners rate the Toyota 4Runner between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to condition, mileage, and maintenance history than to the model's core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota 4Runner?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 97.7% |
| 2025 | 94.7% |
| 2024 | 91.5% |
| 2023 | 87.5% |
| 2022 | 82.2% |
| 2021 | 76.4% |
| 2020 | 70% |
| 2019 | 66% |
| 2018 | 62.2% |
| 2017 | 59.2% |
| 2016 | 56.9% |
| 2015 | 57.3% |
| 2014 | 57.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
- Infotainment: an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The standard four-cylinder is estimated by the EPA to return 20 mpg city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg in combined driving. The Hybrid is estimated at 23/24/23.
Which Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner offers...
- SR5: The base SR5 trim with RWD starts the lineup and gives you the entry point into the new 4Runner's hybrid-ready platform and standard safety suite.
- TRD Off-Road: This trim adds more off-road capability and is a strong pick if you want a more trail-focused setup without jumping to the top of the range.
- TRD Pro: This is one of the most capable adventure-focused trims, suited to buyers who want the strongest off-road hardware in the lineup.
- Trailhunter: The Trailhunter is the top-of-the-line model and the best fit if you want the most extreme adventure-oriented setup, along with the highest-priced trim in the range.
What Toyota 4Runner do most buyers choose?
The Toyota 4Runner years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,564 | 33.2% |
| 2023 | 3,449 | 33% |
| 2022 | 3,342 | 31.8% |
| 2025 | 2,683 | 33.5% |
| 2021 | 2,542 | 31.3% |
| 2020 | 2,370 | 31.4% |
Those higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, pricing, and newer features. When more listings are on the market, you usually have more room to compare condition, mileage, and deal quality.
What is the Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2015 | $22,107 | −3.3% |
| 2023 | $44,691 | −1.94% |
| 2016 | $24,653 | −1.78% |
| 2017 | $27,225 | −1.42% |
| 2024 | $46,558 | +0.49% |
Most model years are moving lower year over year, which can work in your favor if you're shopping used. The table also shows one recent year edging up slightly, so pricing is not moving in exactly the same direction across every model year. Overall, the pattern favors buyers who want to wait for a softer asking price.
The 2024 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2024, 2017, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Tech: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a wireless charging pad are also offered.

Outstanding car for adventuring and commuting in the city, easier to drive and park than a full sized truck.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

Mpg is too low for a commuter. Loud for daily drive.

Toyota 4Runner test drive
overall
The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner proves that good things come to those who wait.
After a very long 15 years, we finally got a new Toyota 4Runner with more capabilities, power, comfort, and technology. It's also more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option and more composed on pavement, but it remains a solid all-terrain vehicle to extend your adventures further.
Verdict: Toyota doesn't throw out the fomula with its newly redesigned 4Runner. Instead, the 2025 model keeps many of the features shoppers have loved for over a decade, while also adding a more contemporary selection of four-cylinder powertrains.
