Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Infotainment: MBUX infotainment system with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
• Fuel efficiency: The G 550 trades last year’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G 63 keeps its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Both models add mild-hybrid system providing 20 hp and 148 lb-ft at lower speeds, with everything connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions and permanent four-wheel drive (4WD) with locking front, center, and rear differentials.

Which Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers these trims:

• G 550: The base model brings the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, mild-hybrid assist, nine-speed automatic, permanent 4WD with locking front, center, and rear differentials, plus the standard MBUX setup with dual 12.3-inch screens and wireless smartphone integration. It suits you if you want the core G-Class experience with the broadest balance of capability and everyday luxury.
• AMG G 63: This performance trim adds the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, stronger output, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, and 20-inch wheels, with available 22-inch wheels and carbon-fiber exterior trim. It is the right pick if you want the most powerful and most characterful version.
• G 580 with EQ Technology: This all-electric model adds a fully electric powertrain to the lineup and gives you the newest take on the G-Class formula.

What Mercedes-Benz G-Class do most buyers choose?

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class years with the most listings are 2024, 2022, and 2023.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare and a wider spread of prices and conditions. They also sit in the sweet spot where newer features and broader availability overlap.

What is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want more room to negotiate. A few years are moving slightly upward, but the overall pattern still favors buyers looking for recent-model value. The changes are mixed rather than uniform, so the best opportunities come from comparing condition, mileage, and listing quality alongside price.

The 2015 and 2017 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.

The 2018, 2014, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

• 2025: 7/10

• 2020: 7/10
• 2019: 6/10

Standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic sign recognition.

For the safest used buy, the 2021 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.

• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $176,585. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers a distinctive boxy design and a cabin that feels unmistakably special.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The base G 550 trades last year’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G 63 keeps its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
• Tech: It features the same Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system as other vehicles wearing the three-pointed star, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
• Safety: Three new features were also added for the 2025 model year, including route-based speed adaptation, automated lane centering, and an emergency-stop feature.
• Starting price: For reference, the 2024 G 550 and G 63 priced around $143,000 and $183,000, respectively.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
