Is the Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the Honda Civic is a strong used-car pick for shoppers who want a compact car with broad appeal and a long-running reputation for value. The all-generations owner rating is 4.47/5 across every model year in the data.

The main trade-offs in recent expert reviews center on all-wheel drive not being offered, road noise at speed, and technology that can feel dated in some trims.
30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Honda Civic models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the Civic for reliability, fuel economy, and everyday usability. The model also earns repeat praise for being comfortable and enjoyable to drive, which adds to its long-term appeal.
- Owners rate the Honda Civic between 4.5 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by checking maintenance records and model-year history carefully, especially on older examples.
What should I look for when buying a used Honda Civic?
Across all model years, at 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 88.5% |
| 2025 | 87% |
| 2024 | 84.9% |
| 2023 | 81.4% |
| 2022 | 73.8% |
| 2021 | 62.1% |
| 2020 | 55.5% |
| 2019 | 52.7% |
| 2018 | 48.1% |
| 2017 | 45.9% |
| 2016 | 45.8% |
| 2015 | 48.1% |
| 2014 | 48.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2023 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing collection of advanced driving assistance systems
- Infotainment: 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The Civic’s EPA fuel economy ratings are respectable at 31 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg in combined driving.
Which Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Civic offers these trims:
- LX: The entry Civic sedan uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque, a CVT with paddle shifters, and Normal, Sport, and Econ driving modes. It suits you if you want the simplest Civic setup.
- Sport: This trim adds 18-inch wheels, a better-looking cabin presentation, eight speakers, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is the best-value trim if you want more equipment without moving far up the lineup.
- Sport Hybrid: The hybrid powertrain brings stronger performance and impressive efficiency, making it the right pick if you want the most complete balance of power and economy.
- Sport Touring Hybrid: This trim adds larger 10.2-inch instrumentation and 9-inch infotainment displays, Google built-in, Alexa built-in, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. It suits you if you want the most tech-rich Civic sedan.
- Si: The Si uses a non-hybrid turbocharged gas engine with a manual transmission only, giving you the sportiest sedan-focused setup in the lineup.
- Type R: The Type R sits at the top of the Civic performance range and is the most extreme choice for driving enthusiasts.
What Honda Civic do most buyers choose?
The Honda Civic years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 5,367 | 32.8% |
| 2025 | 4,787 | 32.5% |
| 2023 | 4,677 | 31.6% |
| 2019 | 2,962 | 29.7% |
| 2022 | 2,921 | 30.9% |
| 2018 | 2,707 | 29.4% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, more pricing flexibility, and a newer-feeling Civic experience. They also sit close enough to current production that you can often find a strong mix of features and value.
What is the Honda Civic's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $18,722 | −6.07% |
| 2019 | $17,343 | −5.44% |
| 2025 | $25,597 | −4.1% |
| 2021 | $19,353 | −3.84% |
| 2022 | $22,560 | −3.39% |
| 2018 | $16,253 | −3.03% |
| 2016 | $13,940 | −2.41% |
| 2017 | $15,446 | −1.52% |
| 2024 | $25,310 | −1.06% |
| 2023 | $24,318 | −0.82% |
| 2014 | $11,254 | +0.25% |
| 2015 | $12,216 | +1.21% |
Most model years are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used and benefit from softer pricing. A few older years are close to flat or slightly higher, showing that some Civic generations continue to hold value well. Overall, the pattern favors shoppers who want to wait for a better deal rather than rush into a purchase.
The 2014 and 2023 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2014, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Honda Civic test drive
overall

The Honda Civic is a familiar sight, but it’s well worth a second look.
It’s been almost half a decade since Honda introduced this latest Civic. That’s hard to believe, because this car has aged with remarkable grace. After a mild update for the 2025 model year, the 2026 Civic lineup carries over unchanged. It continues to offer sedans and hatchbacks, with or without hybrid power. Sporty Si and performance-tuned Type R variants are also available, but Honda still doesn’t offer the Civic with all-wheel drive. Does that matter? Seemingly not, because the Civic is Honda’s second-best-selling car (behind the CR-V), and one of the top-selling compact cars in America.
Verdict: You’ll pay a premium to buy a Honda Civic. In many ways, it’s worth the extra money. In others, not so much. Still, while there are better deals in the compact car class, few are as satisfying to drive, and that’s true even when the Civic is equipped with its base engine.
