The BMW X2 has been around for several years now, filling the next-to-smallest spot in the automaker’s crossover SUV lineup. Though small, it sports a pair of energetic turbocharged engine options and more interesting styling than the smaller X1, and BMW has kept it up-to-date with the latest iDrive infotainment interfaces over the years. The X2 enters its second generation for 2024 with a refreshed look and a host of other updates.

What’s New for the 2024 BMW X2

The X2 got a complete overhaul for 2024, shifting into its second generation and adding a new, much sportier M35i xDrive trim. Other improvements include a new curved display screen with BMW’s iDrive 9 infotainment interface and a fresh interior design.

Design

The new X2 features a “coupe” SUV shape with a sloped roof and cropped rear end. It’s 7.6 inches longer than its predecessor and has an almost 1-inch longer wheelbase, affording better interior space. It’s also taller and wider, giving it more muscular looks and a wider track that fits larger wheels for better handling and stability at speed.

Powertrain

The base xDrive28i features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Though its specs are modest on paper, the powertrain is strong enough to propel the X2 from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Stepping up to the X2 M35i xDrive adds a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter making 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. BMW notes a 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time for the hotter M35i, and the automaker has said that the more powerful engine features a stronger crankshaft, av new oil supply system, and engineering drawn from BMW's high-performance six-cylinder engines. Both X2 variants come paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) and all-wheel drive (AWD).

Interior

BMW updated the X2’s interior with more shoulder and elbow room in both rows. It features a raised seating position, with most controls and displays oriented toward the driver. There’s a new center console design with an updated gear selector, and the unit houses the start/stop button, volume control, and hazard lights. The seats are all-new for 2024, bringing better bolstering and support and more adjustability. Two seat designs are available, including a sport seat option. BMW offers animal-free materials, and the M Sport package includes the vegan leather with Alcantara sport seats.

Technology

The iDrive 9 infotainment system runs on a 10.7-inch touchscreen, which lies behind a curved glass panel with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available by subscription. BMW also offers a Digital Premium subscription with games, third-party apps, and streaming audio services.

Safety

The 2024 X2 has more driver-assistance systems than the model has in previous years. Forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and more are standard. The new X2 hasn’t been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as of this writing.

Pricing

At the time of publication, the 2024 X2 starts at $42,995, which includes a $995 destination charge. The range-topping X2 M35i costs $52,395 to start, and both are available with a host of options that increase the price.
