What’s New for the 2023 BMW 4 Series

For 2023, the 4 Series gains a newly standard digital instrument panel and a new, larger touchscreen for the infotainment system. The Gran Coupe also returns to the lineup.

Design

The 2023 4 Series stands out in a crowd with its unmistakable (and sometimes polarizing) front-end design. The available convertible’s classic cloth top can open or close in about 18 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph. The Gran Coupe has four doors and a wide-opening rear hatch.

Powertrain

The BMW 430i is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Moving up to the M440i upgrades the engine to a twin-turbocharged inline-six that puts out 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Both engines route power through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels or to available xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD).

Moving up to the M440i adds upgraded brakes, a sport differential, and a performance suspension. These features are available on the 430i as part of the Dynamic Handling Package.

The 2023 BMW 430i returns fuel economy of 25 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined. Adding xDrive AWD brings fuel economy down to 23 mpg city, 33 highway, and 27 combined. The M440i returns 24 mpg city, 32 highway, 27 combined while the M440i xDrive returns 22 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined. The BMW 4 Series requires premium fuel.

Interior

Standard features on the 2023 4 Series include 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry, and power-adjustable front seats. Available features include 19-inch wheels, premium leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. If it’s cabin space you’re after, look to the Gran Coupe, which has easily accessed rear seats and up to 45.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

Technology

The 4 Series comes standard with a fully digital instrument panel and, for 2023, a 10.25-inch touchscreen that runs the iDrive infotainment system. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a pair of USB ports are all standard, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo system is available.

Safety

BMW equips the 2023 4 Series with an assortment of modern driver-assistance features, including forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and speed-limit recognition. It also comes standard with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. The M440i is also available with a Parking Assistance Package that adds a 360-degree parking camera system and automatic parking assistance.

Pricing

Base MSRP for the 2023 BMW 4 Series at the time of this writing is $47,600 for the 430i Gran Coupe. The 430i Coupe starts at $49,100, and the 430i Convertible starts at $57,200. The M440i xDrive Convertible has the highest starting price, at $70,550. The BMW 4 Series is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
