The BMW 3 Series's current nationwide average price is $23,937, and its lowest point over the past year was $22,301. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 3 Series has a strong reputation for sporty performance, engaging handling, and stylish design. The all-generations owner rating is 4.58/5 across every model year in the data.

The main tradeoffs called out in recent expert reviews center on snug interior space, front seat comfort on longer trips and hot days, and confusing, inconsistent names for technology.
32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 3 Series models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the BMW 3 Series for its sporty performance, engaging handling, and premium-feeling cabin. The latest model-year feedback also points to strong driving dynamics and a well-rounded ownership experience.
- Owners rate the BMW 3 Series between 4.14 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to maintenance and repair costs than to the car’s core driving character, so a well-documented service history matters.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 3 Series?
Across all model years, at 72.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96.1% |
| 2025 | 94.8% |
| 2024 | 91.1% |
| 2023 | 88.6% |
| 2022 | 83.5% |
| 2021 | 74.4% |
| 2020 | 72.3% |
| 2019 | 64.8% |
| 2018 | 58.6% |
| 2017 | 53.7% |
| 2016 | 50.9% |
| 2015 | 52.1% |
| 2014 | 52.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA fuel economy rating is 31 mpg in combined driving.
Which BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW 3 Series offers these trims:
- 330i: The 330i is the entry point and delivers the core 3 Series formula with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, 255 horsepower, and a standard eight-speed automatic. It suits you if you want the classic balance of performance and everyday usability.
- 330i xDrive: This version adds BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system to the 330i setup, along with the same 255-horsepower turbo four and automatic transmission. It suits you if you want the 3 Series character with AWD traction.
- M340i xDrive: This trim steps up to a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid inline-six with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, plus xDrive and the eight-speed automatic. It is the best-value choice if you want a big jump in performance without going all the way to the M3.
- M3: The M3 is the performance flagship and adds the most serious pace in the lineup, along with the option of a manual transmission for buyers who want one.
What BMW 3 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 3 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2026.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 2,406 | 34.9% |
| 2024 | 2,018 | 36.3% |
| 2026 | 1,831 | 35.2% |
| 2022 | 1,768 | 34.3% |
| 2023 | 1,754 | 34.3% |
| 2021 | 1,530 | 33.8% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more choice in trims, colors, and equipment combinations, which makes it easier to find the right match. They also tend to be the years shoppers cross-shop most often, so you can compare more listings at similar price points.
What is the BMW 3 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $11,678 | −11.08% |
| 2025 | $41,239 | −10.48% |
| 2021 | $25,396 | −9.95% |
| 2017 | $13,651 | −7.54% |
| 2023 | $34,634 | −7.52% |
| 2018 | $15,206 | −7.52% |
| 2022 | $28,536 | −7.19% |
| 2015 | $10,645 | −6.5% |
| 2020 | $23,931 | −6.23% |
| 2019 | $20,714 | −5.94% |
| 2014 | $10,085 | −4.63% |
| 2024 | $38,040 | +0.45% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which creates more room for used buyers to find value. The declines are especially pronounced in several recent and mid-cycle years, while one newer year is essentially flat and another is slightly up.
The 2024 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2024, 2014, and 2019 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

BMW 3 Series test drive
overall
Long the benchmark of luxury sports sedans, the 2025 BMW 3 Series is still a thrill.
To enjoy driving a new 3 Series, you don’t need to upgrade to the M340i or the M3, though we certainly wouldn’t discourage you if those models are within your budget. Instead, try the standard 330i with the M Sport Package. It’s surprisingly satisfying. Plus, minor updates and refinements make the 2025 3 Series better than ever. However, the plug-in hybrid powertrain is gone, so for that, you’ll need to find a leftover 2024.
Verdict: The 2025 BMW 3 Series isn’t perfect, but it’s perfectly enjoyable to drive. Also, for a car nearing the end of its current generation, it offers remarkably advanced technology. A redesign is coming soon, but the current version remains one of our favorites.
