Overall, owners of the Volvo S40 have a favorable impression of this model across multiple years, often praising its safety, stylish design, and engaging driving experience. Many appreciate the comfortable interior, good gas mileage, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engines. However, some common complaints include limited back seat space, occasional maintenance issues, and the need for improved acceleration in some models. The S40 stands out for its solid build quality and the premium feel it offers compared to competitors.

loved this car. Safe, yet sporty! Very reliable and enjoyable to own. Good gas mileage for class. Great amenities, leather, wood paneling, sunroof, seat warmers, etc. comfortable for long trips as well as for scooting about town. Small enough to fit tight parking spaces and large enough to not feel like you would be crushed like an aluminum can if you were ever be involved in an accident.

My 2001 S40 1.9 Turbo is a very fun vehicle to drive. Overall performance is great. Braking and acceleration is surprising and it's build quality is good. The Volvo's appearance is attractive. Very luxurious car. Gas mileage is the best I've ever driven and maintenance is needed very rarely.

based on the 2009 s40 i have ,(and the cars are literally the same) the car drives and handles very well. it is a smaller car but with a decent interior and ok trunk space. they they come with a inline 5 cylinder and i recommend a turbocharged one. the only Achilles heel that it has is the timing belt service due at 100,000 -120,000 miles. i would compare it to a focus or fiesta as far as size. power is a bit stronger than Honda’s or Volkswagens of the era but not as powerful at a v8 from Americans. overall the vehicle is heavily slept on and i think most people are scared to own one when in reality if you do the maintenance on it, they can last forever, will not break down, and can be decent on gas mileage. I drive a 2009 volvo s40 T5 r-design AWD with a factory installed polestar tune and i love to drive it every day.

For a borderline compact car, it feels wonderfully spacious on the inside. The back seat can comfortable fit two tall persons, and the front seats have plenty of room to spare. Trunk is large as well, and can carry far more cargo than you think it should. Acceleration is a little timid, but all in all a very fun car to drive, it handles very well on dry or wet pavement, ice or snow. I have had a great experience with this car, and would highly recommend Volvo to anyone looking for a new car.

The Volvo S40 packs an awful lot into a compact sedan. Between its nearly countless safety features (nearly all of them standard equipment) and luxurious detail, the car satisfies the hard-to-please with a compact package. The mighty little S40 enjoyed years of popularity in Europe before U.S. sales began in 2000, after Ford's acquisition of Volvo. It was made over for the 2004 model year with a slightly more generous interior and enhanced safety features. Certainly, small cars are the rule in European countries, while Americans tend to love bulk in a vehicle, but with ever-rising gas prices, this little sedan definitely has its role here. That said, it may not be the best choice for families, as the backseat is rather cramped.
