(13 reviews)Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so some ppl might find it fugly ... but i actually think it has great lines & that classic porsche front. The problem is the fat trunk hence the name "squareback". It does 0-60 in 17 secs, which is not bad for a 3000 pound car with a 4cylinder 1600 CC engine. Braking is quite good & it handles fairly good. & it's definitely easier to park than a beetle. Build quality is more than excellent. I dont think any other car has a clutch cable that could last 35 years without braking & it also has one of the best heating systems ever made by volkswagen. the interior is very cosy with lots of legroom. & with the pancake engine in the back... i have more storage space than any estate car made. It does a very clean 25 miles per gallon & it can go almost anywhere. it puts most bigger cars to shame in snowy/cold weather. All & all, it's a very reliable car that captivates you very fast & since it's an air cooled vw... maintenance is almost something you might forget about.
My first Car, went through several colours, many engines and other modifications. Managed a 15.19 second QTR mile with a 1835cc engine. Finally sold it a few years back
The Variant had quite aerodynamic lines and road holding was surprisingly good for a station wagon. Having a flat four engine under the rear floor gave a lot of space as well as the boot in front giving secure storage. The engine was typical of air cooled engines being fairly noisy, but this did not detract from the fun. We had three of them.
this car belonged to my grandma and now its my sweet ride. It has an old 4 speed engine and the counter is in miles, something rare for these days, specially not living in the states or any other english colony... It's fast and very comfortable to drive. A bit unstable when driving to fast but that's not the idea of driving such a jewel... I love it!!!
all in all, a sweet classic. of course its no fast machine, its aircooled! but with the factory FI setup has around 65 horsepower. its faster than a bug, but imho harder to take care of. many people change it out for a carb setup. the FI system is old and out of date, hard to find parts for. its a fun car... get a lot of looks. its a type 3 variant- the squareback.
