Across all model years, at 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|

| 2016 | 60% |
| 2015 | 65.3% |

| 2016 | 110 | 40.9% |
| 2017 | 75 | 44% |

What is the Volkswagen Touareg's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $13,944 | −12.89% |
| 2014 | $10,063 | −8.89% |
Prices are moving lower across the years shown, which can work in your favor if you're shopping used. The double-digit drop in one year and high-single-digit drop in the other point to meaningful softening rather than a flat market. That creates a better entry point for buyers who want more vehicle for the money.
The 2014 and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Should I buy a used Volkswagen Touareg now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2016 model is at −12.89% versus a year ago, and the 2014 model is at −8.89%.
- Deal availability: The 2016 model has 40.9% good and great deals, and the 2014 model has 29.1%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2015 model has the most listings.
If you're buying used today, the 2015 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the newest version, it may be worth waiting for 2018 inventory to mature.

Penultimate SUV! V10 Diesel torque and economy, towing capability, This model VW made to show Porsche who is Boss! Exceptional off-road capability, but road ability is superb and not compromised, AND biggest 6 piston Brembo brakes in the industry. Euro paddle shifters makes this car a standout, and so much torque, that shifts are made at 1,600 rpm and rarely need to go beyond 2,500 rpm, although redline is 4,400 rpm. Make sure you have tow package if buying one, as retro-fit is very expensive! Luxury interior and controls with excellent upgrade radio, and 4 way AC controls including 4 seat heating. V10 is their monster showcase with performance, exceptional braking, good mileage, and comfort that will tackle adverse weather with ease.

Great overall vehicle. Excellent craftsmanship and finish materials. Very good off road, in the snow and plenty of power on the highway. Sad Volkswagen discontinued building it.

Introduced in 2004, the Volkswagen Touareg is the automaker's entry into the mid-range SUV market. Developed with Porsche and sharing the same platform as the Porsche Cayenne SUV, the award-winning Touareg was named for a nomadic tribe that lives in the Sahara Desert. It was designed to excel in that rugged climate, and others like it, as well as in typical suburban neighborhoods.
The Touareg is available in three trim packages based on engine size. The entry-level model in 2004 was a 3.2-liter V6 engine that generated 220 hp. It was upgraded to 240 hp in 2005. Also available was a 4.2-liter V8 that pumped out 310 hp, and a 5.0-liter, 310-hp V10 turbodiesel that generated more torque than the V8, making it the Touareg's most powerful engine option. The V10 turbodiesel was discontinued in the 2005 and 2006 model years but reintroduced in 2007.
All three engines were linked to a six-speed automatic overdrive transmission, which was standard across the line. The six-speed was a bit controversial, especially with reviewers, who noted that it tended to accelerate the vehicle even when the foot was held constant on the gas pedal. The six-speed also could be a bit jumpy on downshifts, reviewers noted.
As far as standard features were concerned, the Touareg came with a long list that included a power moonroof, power windows, remote power door locks, heated exterior mirrors, heated front bucket seats, leather and wood trim throughout the cabin, multi-zone climate control, automatic on/off headlights, front and side airbags, cruise control, daytime running lights, and an anti-theft alarm system. Traction control, stability control, descent control, front fog lights, full-time four-wheel drive, and anti-lock brakes were also standard. The V8 and V10 trim packages added even more, such as leather seats and 18-inch wheels.
