Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser stands out as a rugged, retro-styled SUV built for drivers who care more about capability than polish. Its boxy design was inspired by Toyota’s classic FJ lineage, and underneath that distinctive body it used durable components shared with other Toyota trucks and SUVs. That hardware helped give it the kind of off-road character that made it appealing to buyers looking for something more serious than a typical crossover.
For 2014, the FJ Cruiser’s 4.0-liter V6 was rated at 260 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, and Toyota paired it with a reputation for reliability and durable transmissions and four-wheel-drive systems. It also offered practical touches that fit its mission, including rear-hinged doors, a split-folding rear seat that opened up 66.8 cubic feet of cargo space, a factory roof rack, and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. The 2014 model year was its last in North America, and Toyota marked the end with the Trail Teams Ultimate Edition, which added upgraded suspension components, bead-lock wheels, chunky off-road tires, a beefier skid plate package, and Heritage Blue paint.
The tradeoffs were part of the package. The FJ Cruiser was known for poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and poor visibility, and its starting MSRP was around $28,000 when new. Even so, its strong resale value, off-road ability, and loyal following helped make it a distinctive used SUV for buyers who wanted something tough, capable, and a little different.
