Customers say
The Toyota ECHO is well-regarded for its reliability and outstanding fuel economy across all model years. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior for a small car and the ease of parking. However, some feel it's underpowered compared to larger vehicles and can struggle in adverse weather conditions. Other common complaints include the lack of certain features like cruise control and overall acceleration. Despite these drawbacks, the ECHO is seen as a practical, economical choice for daily driving and commuting.

Always loved the Echo. Good gas mileage, simple/sporty little car that lasts forever.

I've liked virtually everything about this car for over 348,000 miles!!! So much that when I realized it might not last forever, I spent two days test driving new cars and then went and found a great buy on a used one with only 49,000 miles. I figure I'm all set for the next 13 years!!

Appearance: Friendly looking car. Comfort level up there, for what you would expect from this price class. Build quality: Very easy to drive with perfect visibility. Never in the shop for anything. Really good on gas and basically maintenance free. Performance: Sufficient acceleration to pass people, easy to go with the flow. Braking weak, but predictable. Handling sufficient for everyday driving. Felt safe and in control driving it. The car is fun to drive.

Overview
The Toyota ECHO was introduced as a 2000 model to fill the sub-compact gap left behind by the discontinued Tercel, which was last produced as a 1998. The car was notable for its height, which was taller than most sub-compacts, allowing for more roominess inside.
The Toyota Echo was decidedly an economy car. It came with very few options, but it did get excellent gas mileage--up to 43 mpg on the highway. However, it was noisy at high speeds, and its low weight meant it got blown around.
The Echo was most noted for its unusual style, which was tall but short. It was compared to everything from a roller skate to a penalty box. Some people found it charming, but many just found it ugly.
The Echo never connected with the young market it was supposed to. It was discontinued in 2005, to make way for the arguably hipper and more timely Yaris two years later.
