| 2015 | $13,524 | $13,248 – $14,082 |
The Subaru WRX's current nationwide average price is $23,576, and over the past year that average reached a low of $22,638. That gives you a useful snapshot of where this model has been trading recently. Recently, prices have come down for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the Subaru WRX has a strong owner following and a clear enthusiast identity. The all-generations owner rating is 4.82/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the WRX for its thrilling performance, sporty handling, turbocharged power, and standard all-wheel drive. Many also value its engaging driving experience and everyday usability, especially with the manual transmission.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2020 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs that show up in recent expert reviews are outdated technology, poor fuel economy, and interior quality or comfort concerns. For used shoppers, that means the WRX makes the most sense if you want a performance-focused sedan and are comfortable prioritizing driving enjoyment over refinement.
31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Subaru WRX models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the WRX for its performance, handling, all-wheel-drive confidence, and engaging driving character. Across the model years, that same enthusiast-focused formula is a big part of why the car has such a loyal following.
- Owners rate the Subaru WRX between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is most tied to how the car was driven and maintained, so a careful history check and service records matter.
What should I look for when buying a used Subaru WRX?
Across all model years, at 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 95.8% |
| 2025 | 93.6% |
| 2024 | 90.5% |
| 2023 | 87.8% |
| 2022 | 81.9% |
| 2021 | 73% |
| 2020 | 60.9% |
| 2019 | 58.3% |
| 2018 | 55.6% |
| 2017 | 55.5% |
| 2016 | 53.7% |
| 2015 | 53.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Subaru's EyeSight safety system
- Infotainment: Subaru Starlink infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen
- Fuel efficiency: The WRX's EPA fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway) with the manual transmission and 21 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway) with the CVT are respectable for a performance car.
Which Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2023 Subaru WRX offers these trims:
- WRX: The entry point gives you the WRX's core enthusiast formula, and it is the best-value choice if you want the model's driving character without moving up the lineup.
- Premium: This trim adds the larger 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen and builds on the WRX's everyday usability.
- Limited: This trim adds more comfort and convenience equipment, along with available safety features and upgraded headlights.
- GT: This trim adds Recaro Performance Design front seats, Ultrasuede upholstery, electronically controlled dampers, and drive mode select for a more specialized performance setup.
What Subaru WRX do most buyers choose?
The Subaru WRX years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 1,267 | 32.7% |
| 2022 | 1,119 | 33.2% |
| 2024 | 985 | 33.4% |
| 2021 | 853 | 31.7% |
| 2018 | 673 | 30.8% |
| 2019 | 643 | 29.9% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare and a strong mix of pricing and deal availability. They also sit close to the model's current-generation sweet spot, which helps keep shopper interest high.
What is the Subaru WRX's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $14,352 | −6.22% |
| 2019 | $19,129 | −5.63% |
| 2022 | $26,218 | −5.49% |
| 2017 | $15,485 | −5.19% |
| 2018 | $17,416 | −4.36% |
| 2024 | $30,728 | −4.11% |
| 2020 | $21,474 | −3.62% |
| 2015 | $13,524 | −3.29% |
| 2021 | $22,995 | −2.47% |
| 2023 | $28,434 | −1.42% |
The table shows broad price softening across the WRX lineup, which is helpful if you're shopping used and want to stretch your budget. The smallest declines are concentrated among the more recent model years, while older examples are dropping more quickly. That creates a clear value ladder: newer WRXs still command stronger prices, but the overall direction favors buyers.
The 2023, 2021, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Subaru WRX safe?
- 2023: 9/10
- 2022: 5/10
- 2021: 6/10
- 2020: 9/10
- 2016: 9/10
The WRX gets Subaru's EyeSight safety system, which adds adaptive cruise control, automated lane-centering, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning.
For the safest used buy, the 2016, 2020 and 2023 models all post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Subaru WRX now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2024 model is at −4.11% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −1.42%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 33.4% good and great deals, and the 2023 model has 32.7%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $28,434. The Subaru WRX offers a distinctive rally-bred character, standard all-wheel drive, and an engaging driving experience that has made it a favorite among enthusiasts.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The WRX is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine with 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and it returns 22 mpg combined with the manual transmission or 21 mpg combined with the CVT.
- Tech: Subaru Starlink infotainment includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, plus either a pair of 7-inch touchscreens or an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen.
- Safety: The latest model adds Subaru's EyeSight safety system with adaptive cruise control, automated lane-centering, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning.
- Starting price: Pricing starts at $31,625 for the base model with the manual transmission.
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Customers say
The Subaru WRX has garnered widespread acclaim for its thrilling performance and sporty handling across all model years. Many drivers love the turbocharged power, all-wheel drive capabilities, and engaging driving experience, especially with the manual transmission. However, some owners have expressed concerns about interior quality and comfort, particularly for larger individuals. While the WRX is celebrated for its value as a performance vehicle, enhancements like a refined interior and more comfortable features are often desired.

Great value, best AWD 4 door sedan you can get for the price. Interior is comfortable and high tech, good for tall people. Little to no blind spots, lots of visibility.

This vehicle drives great and feels solid on the road. The engine runs smoothly, acceleration is responsive, and handling is comfortable for both city driving and highway use. The interior is clean, well-kept, and offers plenty of space, with everything functioning as it should. The ride is smooth, braking feels strong, and the vehicle is easy to maneuver. Overall, it’s a reliable, well-maintained car that offers great value for the price and would be a good fit for daily driving.

Great car all around. Clutch is stiff and the bite point is high, so it was an adjustment coming from something that was the opposite. Very quick, very little lag in the turbo. Feels faster than it is which makes it fun. Cobb intake was already installed at purchase (low miles though) had to tune to account for it but made the car feel smoother and more responsive. Likely will be upgrading further, but not pushing too far to failure.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Subaru WRX stands out as a rally-inspired compact sport sedan that has grown up without losing the character that made it appealing in the first place. Subaru traces the WRX’s roots to the 1990s as a homologation special for the World Rally Championship, and the model has remained a fixture in the U.S. lineup since the 2002 model year. That heritage still gives the WRX a distinctive identity among sporty compact cars, and it continues to appeal to buyers who want something with a performance-focused personality.
For 2023, the current fourth-generation WRX carries over without changes, so its appeal comes from the formula Subaru had already established for this generation. The lineup includes base, Premium, Limited, and GT trim levels. In testing, the WRX was praised for its stylish design, great handling, and available manual transmission, all of which reinforce its enthusiast-friendly mission.
There are tradeoffs, though. The WRX’s technology is described as unintuitive, it is considered poor value for money, and it offers less cargo space than rivals. Even so, its combination of all-wheel-drive performance roots, sharp handling, and driver-focused character makes the 2023 Subaru WRX distinctive in a segment where many competitors lean more heavily toward everyday practicality.
