Is the Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the Subaru Forester is a strong used-car pick if you want space, confidence in poor weather, and everyday practicality. The all-generations owner rating is 4.62/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Forester for its spacious interior, all-wheel-drive capability, safety features, and comfortable ride. Across the model’s history, it also earns repeat praise for reliability and usefulness, which helps explain why so many shoppers keep it on their short list.
Expert reviews rate the 2019 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in expert reviews are sluggish acceleration, CVT behavior that can feel slow, and infotainment systems that can be frustrating or dated in some years.
34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Subaru Forester models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Forester’s reliability, practicality, and all-weather confidence as core strengths. The model’s long-running reputation for spaciousness, safety, and everyday usefulness shows up again and again in owner feedback.
- Owners rate the Subaru Forester between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to individual vehicle history and maintenance than to the model’s overall reputation, so a careful inspection and history report matter.
What should I look for when buying a used Subaru Forester?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 81.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 97.1% |

| 2017 | 64.4% |
| 2016 | 63.8% |
| 2015 | 62.9% |
| 2014 | 62.9% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.

Which Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

- Base: standard Active Torque Split all-wheel drive, X-Mode Dual Mode traction settings, and the 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system; a strong starting point if you want the core Forester formula.
- Premium: adds more comfort and convenience equipment, making it a sensible step up for everyday use.
- Sport: adds a more distinctive appearance and a more expressive setup for shoppers who want extra style.
- Limited: adds more upscale features and is a good fit if you want a more polished cabin.
- Wilderness: adds a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, exclusive wheel designs, extra body cladding, anodized copper accents, more underbody protection, increased ground clearance, and a full-size all-terrain spare tire; this is the best-value trim if you want the Forester’s most capable setup.
- Touring: adds the most premium equipment in the lineup for buyers who want the most fully featured Forester.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest Forester Wilderness uses a normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and Subaru estimates 26 mpg in combined driving.
- Tech: The latest Forester Wilderness pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel with an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging.
- Safety: The latest Forester adds improved rear seatbelts to enhance occupant safety and includes Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection.
- Starting price: The gas-only 2026 Forester lineup starts at $31,445.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Overall, drivers have consistently praised the Subaru Forester across all model years for its reliability, spacious interiors, and excellent all-wheel drive capabilities. Many appreciate the safety features and comfortable ride, making it a top choice for families and adventurous individuals alike. However, some owners have expressed concerns about performance, particularly the lack of power and sluggish acceleration, as well as the outdated styling in certain models. The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

Right number of features. Great value. Solid vehicle. Missing? Maybe extras like fancy media, swoopy dashboards and soft armrests. Perfect utility vehicle.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Forester on Apr 7, 2025
I fell in love with this car at first sight. I drove and considered a 2025 Forester to compare and could not move to 2025. The 2017 Forester is friendly, bright, wide visibility, you sit high in it, it has a smooth ride and has all the basics that you need. My particular pre-owned model had a quality I cannot describe that is probably due to the previous owner but it is a perfect car. I would not hesitate to buy at 2017 Forester, unless it is truly toward the end of its life.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact crossover that has been part of the segment since its early days, and it remains a solid choice for buyers who want a straightforward, capable SUV. For 2021, it is mostly unchanged, which means the focus stays on the Forester’s core strengths rather than a major redesign. It also comes with standard all-wheel drive across five trim levels, a feature that helps define its appeal.
This model year’s updates are modest but useful: steering-responsive LED headlights, automatic high beams, and a rear seatbelt reminder are now standard, while the Premium trim adds standard fog lights and keyless access with push-button start. The Forester’s strengths include excellent value for money, great safety ratings, and the confidence of standard AWD. Its drawbacks are also clear, with uninspired styling, sluggish performance, and interior materials that feel cheap. Owners also tend to praise its spacious feel, safety features, and reliability, which reinforces its reputation as a trustworthy everyday vehicle.
