Saab 9-3 Overview
The Saab 9-3 is the direct descendant of the legendary Saab 900. Their changing of the guard occurred in 1998, as the 9-3 debuted as a 1999.
The major differences in the 9-3 were behind the scenes, rather than on the surface; much in the way of technical improvement marked this new model. But the big departure cane in 2003, when the 9-3 became a four-door sedan, a notable change from the typical Saab hatchback. It has also been available as a convertible since 2004.
The Swedish carmaker's 5-passenger sport sedan has as its main competitors these other European-branded cars: the Audi A-4, the BMW 3 Series, and the Volvo S Series. Each is considered a sporty luxury sedan, with slightly varying emphasis on handling, safety, performance, and plushness.
Every Saab 9-3 features a turbocharged engine, whether it's 4- or 6-cylinder. The original theme of the manufacturer lives on, with the driver's "cockpit" reminiscent of that of a jet aircraft. As always in Saab tradition, the ignition is located not to the right of the steering wheel, but down at the base of the center console.

The Saab 9-3 models from various years have garnered a generally positive reputation for their spirited performance, unique styling, and comfortable interiors. Owners particularly appreciate the turbocharged engines that deliver power and an enjoyable driving experience, making the car fun on the road. Many drivers like the fuel economy during longer journeys and the distinctive design that stands out from the crowd. However, there are concerns about parts availability, repair costs, and some interior quality issues that can detract from the overall ownership experience. Despite these drawbacks, the Saab 9-3 remains a compelling option for those seeking a stylish and sporty ride.

This review is for the 2001 Viggen Convertible. This car is very stylish for the early 2000s and was a fair attempt by Saab to make a competitor to the M3 and S4. Unfortunately the performance aspect of this car is hindered by its front wheel drive set up and suspension configuration. The punchy acceleration is great but the torque steer in the lower gears is a hinderance. The seats are comfortable but are very commonly worn at this point. The convertible tops are prone to water leaks and issues with the hydraulic system at this age. My recommendation would be to get a hatchback version of this car. Most of them will need restored at this point and watch out for rust holes in the floors. Overall I would recommend for a Saab enthusiasts collection but not as a budget track car.
I have owned two manual 9-3 Aeros. Both were front wheel drive sedans. These are great economical package if you want performance, comfort and a sharp design, without the reliability issues of its German competitors such as the E90 335i or B7 A4. This is a car that you could take on a road trip and not get tired driving in. The layout of the interior is very driver friendly and is easy to operate. Parts availability is not an issue with this Saab, most parts are still available new, and used parts are plentiful. If you do not work on cars yourself, take this to someone who knows Saabs, if your mechanic does not own or know what a Tech2 is, dont let him touch your car. The flaws of the car I would have to say are the shifter, its very notchy and feels more clunky compared to other front wheel drive cars and the interior is more prone to rattling with age. Overall I would recommend if you are looking for a comfortable, classy used car that stands out from the crowd.
Very reliable and runs very smoothly. Would recommend to new drivers
Overall superb vehicle. It doesnt exceed at anything, but it does everything well. Commuter vehicle, road warrior, work truck, and anything in between. Its done them all and performed like a champ. Highly recommend this vehicle and I hope Saab can be saved from total shutdown!
Great car! awesome handling with instant response! This is easily one of the best affordable cars Ive ever drove! Excellent turbo! The Saab accelerates like a jet, handles beautifully and is a pleasure to drive! It is by far the most reliable car I have owned
