Customers say
The Saab 9-3 models from various years have garnered a generally positive reputation for their spirited performance, unique styling, and comfortable interiors. Owners particularly appreciate the turbocharged engines that deliver power and an enjoyable driving experience, making the car fun on the road. Many drivers like the fuel economy during longer journeys and the distinctive design that stands out from the crowd. Overall superb vehicle. It doesnt exceed at anything, but it does everything well. Commuter vehicle, road warrior, work truck, and anything in between. Its done them all and performed like a champ. Highly recommend this vehicle and I hope Saab can be saved from total shutdown!

Performance - It accelerates very well but loses traction in first gear. The braking is very responsive but not too sensitive. The handling it sporty, but a little numb. It tends to understeer a little under extreme maneuvers. I have no complaints about the build quality, however it only has 4000 miles on it. I guess the flip out cup holder on the dash could be sturdier. The interior styling is excellent, however I'm not a huge fan of the two-tone seats. I love the look of the steering wheel. The exterior is also very nice. I don't necessarily like the side profile, but I am a coupe guy. The front is very eye-catching and the white taillights look excellent. The gas mileage is a big negative. For the horsepower, it should get much better mileage. I average about 16 in the city. I know of other cars with 300+ horsepower that get the same city mpgs. I have never taken it to the shop, but Saab of Troy offers free service (oil change, check up, etc.) so that's a plus. The car is very fun to drive, especially with the stick shift; however, the shifter and clutch have very long throws. The shifter also does not operate very smoothly. I love the low-end torque and the almost non-existent turbo lag. Overall, it is a fun car with some great styling cues.

Overview
The Saab 9-3 is the direct descendant of the legendary Saab 900. Their changing of the guard occurred in 1998, as the 9-3 debuted as a 1999.
The major differences in the 9-3 were behind the scenes, rather than on the surface; much in the way of technical improvement marked this new model. But the big departure cane in 2003, when the 9-3 became a four-door sedan, a notable change from the typical Saab hatchback. It has also been available as a convertible since 2004.
The Swedish carmaker's 5-passenger sport sedan has as its main competitors these other European-branded cars: the Audi A-4, the BMW 3 Series, and the Volvo S Series. Each is considered a sporty luxury sedan, with slightly varying emphasis on handling, safety, performance, and plushness.
Every Saab 9-3 features a turbocharged engine, whether it's 4- or 6-cylinder. The original theme of the manufacturer lives on, with the driver's "cockpit" reminiscent of that of a jet aircraft. As always in Saab tradition, the ignition is located not to the right of the steering wheel, but down at the base of the center console.
