I am an adamant fan of this model whose short lived import history in the US has now faded into obscurity. I have owned 4 and the 5th is undergoing a 3 year restoration at the moment. It was very advanced for its time compared to US cars and came with luxurious comfort and a list of technological features. Not for the weak-willed. Parts are difficult to come by, though when found they are not overly expensive. However as time passes, everything is getting more difficult for repairs. I am committed till the end. Tread lightly unless you are a Merkur enthusiast.

It was fully loaded, Burgandy with Black/Ebony interior. Power rear seats the car was a H/B ,rear wheel drive with fully ind. suspension. The engine was a 2.9 ltr V6 with auto trans. the heating system was fully digital and the front seats had hand pumps to bolster up the seats. They have 139HP but easily handle over 130mph . The ODO registered in MPH not KPH. They are good on fuel but cost of parts and sourcing them is not something that most people would look forward to dealing with !. If you own one you are sure to turn heads everywhere you go and people will always come up to you and ask about it because they never seen one before and don't know who made them. Merkur is German for Mercury and they were built in Germany and imported only for1987-1990 to a total of 25,000 units in all for Canada and the USA duriing those years. If I had a the money and space I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

I loved having this car, because it had all kinds of weird options on it, like reclining REAR seats, and automatic wipers. Also, it was a very inexpensive car, and it was very reliable. It handled great, was fun to drive, and looked good too. Plus, it was fairly unique. Most people didn't recognize it by name. Getting replacement parts for it was a bit tough though.

Fun and reliable in its day, a car for the collector only now. Parts availability is non-existent. If you want one, hold out for the best example you can find. Definitely worth joining the owners groups online.
