I bought this car as one of my first independent car purchases, Got it in Feb of 1992. Car was great at first, did well in snow and was very comfortable. Then when spring arrived, so did the problems. It began dying in traffic and for no reason. I took it to a number of garages and finally back to a Ford Dealership where they decided it was the fuel pump. I had it replaced but a week later it did it again. A second fuel pump was installed and I was determined to send it on to another owner. Later on the night of my anniversary, it quit one more time, this time flames started from under the hood. The car burned to the ground in front of my very eyes before the Fire Dept could get it put out. It took me almost 20 years before I'd buy another Ford, but I eventually did. No where near the same problems today with my truck. But this car was a total loser! If you are looking at one today then it must be very used, I would stay away from it.

I have heard many different things about the Ford Tempo, or Mercury Topaz, and most of it has pointed towards it being an "Okay" car. Performance-wise, it has good acceleration for a 2.3 L HSC I4, 86 hp (64 kW)-98 hp (73 kW) engine that produces 125 lb·ft (169 N·m)pounds of torque. This also has the 3-speed ATX/FLC automatic transmission, which means it goes from 0-60 mph in about 12.9 seconds and will top out at 99-100 mph. The build quality is acceptable, as the only major work that I've had was having the gaskets fixed and a new radiator. Appearance it still is in good shape. The interor doesn't need anything done to it, and the only exterior work needed doing is a new paint job (planning to get done when it turns 20 years old in 2012. Gas has been really good with my style of driving - if you go about 55 mph, you can optimize it's fuel economy at about 35-36 mpg, but if you are doing over 60 it will drop substantially fast (mid to low 20's). This car is very fun to drive both on the highway and in town, though it is nothing like the other two cars listed on my page here (Ford Galaxie and Mercury Monterey). This car I plan to keep until it runs no longer, and it has only just now passed the 110,000 mile mark.

My 1989 (this year wasn't in the menu) Topaz GS was bought nearly new (6700 miles, 1 1/2 years old) from my grandparents in 1991. Aside from a small parking lot scuff on the rear bumper, it was immaculate. as the years & miles stacked up, the car earned my respect, as it never let me down. A few small things needed fixed here & there (tie rods, ball joints, thermostat), but it kept plugging along, from record -35 degree weather, to the hottest summers. Passed up many fancier cars with their hoods up. I ended up owning that car for 10 years, and over 100,000 miles, and it still ran like a dream the day I sold it.
