Reviewed a 1992 Mercury GS Sedan FWD on Nov 22, 2008

I have heard many different things about the Ford Tempo, or Mercury Topaz, and most of it has pointed towards it being an "Okay" car. Performance-wise, it has good acceleration for a 2.3 L HSC I4, 86 hp (64 kW)-98 hp (73 kW) engine that produces 125 lb·ft (169 N·m)pounds of torque. This also has the 3-speed ATX/FLC automatic transmission, which means it goes from 0-60 mph in about 12.9 seconds and will top out at 99-100 mph. The build quality is acceptable, as the only major work that I've had was having the gaskets fixed and a new radiator. Appearance it still is in good shape. The interor doesn't need anything done to it, and the only exterior work needed doing is a new paint job (planning to get done when it turns 20 years old in 2012. Gas has been really good with my style of driving - if you go about 55 mph, you can optimize it's fuel economy at about 35-36 mpg, but if you are doing over 60 it will drop substantially fast (mid to low 20's). This car is very fun to drive both on the highway and in town, though it is nothing like the other two cars listed on my page here (Ford Galaxie and Mercury Monterey). This car I plan to keep until it runs no longer, and it has only just now passed the 110,000 mile mark.

The 92 Topaz was a good car for the time! It was not a sport's car... It did not want to be, but mine was a 2.3 L 5 speed manual. It was a fun car. It handled relatively well, preformance was pretty good viewing that the engine was rated at 96 hp! It was comparable to other 4 cyl's from other makes around that time. I really like that the car was very well optioned for the price. It came standard with A/C, power brakes, steering, mirrors. I also loved and still do the styling of the car. This one was the 2 door. I though that the wheels bulges gave it a really cool sporty look, the "light" grill was pretty cool too. The only moods to the exterior I made was add, lights to the center "light" grill, I added fog lights, opened up the air intake and raized the spoiler!
