Mercury Sable Overview
When Mercury launched the mid-size Sable four-door sedan in 1986, it set off a design trend that would last through the 1990s and into the early 21st century. That design trend was a move to more aerodynamic, rounded styling. It was a trend that would soon draw in other Mercury/Ford vehicles, such as the Taurus, as well as influence the designs of a number of vehicles from other domestic and foreign automakers.
The early Sables were distinguished by their grill-less front ends with a light bar between aerodynamic headlights, and their almost pillarless side profiles, providing excellent visibility for the driver.
The base engine for the original Sable was a 90-horsepower, 2.5-liter four cylinder, and the car was available in a number of trim packages with either a five-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission. A V6 version was also available.
The look of the Sable was updated in 1992, with a slimmer front light-bar and headlights and a more contemporary design. The car was stretched in length by almost four inches, and engine power was bumped up as well, with all new Sables receiving a 140-horsepower V6. This helped distinguish the Sable from the Taurus, and establish the former as a more upscale vehicle.
The third generation of the Sable arrived in 1996, with a drastic makeover that included oval headlights, an oval grille opening, and oval taillights. It was a look that tended to be rather polarizing -- drivers either loved or hated it. But enough loved it to make the Sable a very profitable vehicle for Ford.
By 2005, the Sable had become dated and even a bit musty, so Ford replaced it in the lineup with the Montego. But by 2008, with Ford in dire need of a few hits, the automaker decided to bring back many of its more popular vehicles over the past couple decades, even if in name only. So just as the Ford Five Hundred was redubbed the Taurus, the Mercury Montego was redubbed the Sable.
For 2008, the Sable's exterior styling has been updated again, with a new grille and front bumper, dual chrome exhaust tips, projector-beam headlamps, redesigned LED taillamps, integrated turn signal markers at either end of the front bumper, 17-inch seven-spoke bright aluminum wheels, and a satin finish on the sideview mirrors and door handles. It's a look that should serve the Sable well as it rides into the coming years.

The Mercury Sable models have provided a solid choice for drivers looking for comfort, spacious interiors, and reliability over the years. Many owners praise the smooth ride, good fuel efficiency, and ample trunk space, making it a practical option for families. However, some drivers express dissatisfaction with its underwhelming engine performance, outdated design, and occasional reliability issues. Overall, the Sable is favored for its value, but some consider it lacks excitement and modern features.

What people say
The 2002 Mercury Sable GS, for its size, has a quick launch, 27mpg highway, a little noisy, handles flat, awkward to get in (Im 62, 230lbs.), and the rearview mirror has GOT to relocate. Dead in the way. The backs of the back seats fold down for a 2 acre trunk, adjustable pedals for the height challenged, and the interior lighting is limited. If it didnt drive like a slot car, and cheap on gas, I wouldnt like it near as much.
This is my second Sable and overall I am impressed with how solid they are. The McPherson strut suspension gives it handling that most cars this heavy lack. It feels secure through corners and is very docile as you carve up the curves at insane speed. The 3.0L engine is a little underpowered for the car, not making any real speed until you pass 3000 rpm. The 3.8L motor feels strong, but still not quick. Both maintain speed well on the highway. The gear ratios in the transmission are definately designed for the highway driver. The best gas mileage is when you can get to speed and maintain a constant speed for a long time. On my 1995, I have four wheel antilock brakes and four wheel disc brakes. I upgraded my front brakes to the specifications of the V8 Taurus SHO (a simple rotor, caliper bracket, and brake pad swap; they use the same hubs and calipers) and this car has literally stopped from 40 mph in 20 feet or less. The interior is comfortable. Other than the radio controls next to the instrument cluster on the dash and the cardboard/velcro vanity mirrors, I have no complaints about the way the car is set up. This is the perfect car for long road trips; comfortable, efficent, and very forgiving of mistakes. I love it and I will buy another one after I drive the wheels off of this one.
I like that it has the 3rd row fold away seat i like that it holds 8 ppl i like that its good on gas and how clean it is the only thing i did not like was that the 6 disc cd chager was in the cargo area.
Compared to my previous car, this is a gem. Very spacious inside, with a lot of top-end goodies, like leather seating, 6-disc CD changer, power-adjustable pedals, automatic thermostat-style AC, nice alloy wheels, automatic headlights, and the best V6 offered for this model at the time. It is reasonably quick, but not sporty; however, it does handle well for a car of its size; much more confidence-inspiring through the twisties than my previous Saturn SL. Despite a somewhat anonymous appearance, I can't help but kind of like the appearance on the outside. The 2-tone dash is a nice touch on the inside. Cost of ownership has been reasonably low so far since I purchased it in April 2010.
just got this iron work horse, she needs quite a bit of body work, 161,000 miles and runs like it just came off the line, gonna be a lot of happy motoring years with this robust Vulcan, cant get any better than a 3.0 OHV
